Located in Bristol’s historic harbourside, Salt & Malt at Cargo is part of a bustling new food hub in the newly regenerated Wapping Wharf.
A takeaway and a small sit-in restaurant serving our Fish & Chips always cooked in our signature gluten free batter as well as our Small Plates menu serving raw and cooked British seafood.
Our fish and potatoes as well as the rest of our menu is always locally and sustainably sourced.

Had a lovely meal at Salt & Malt! Excellent fish and chips spot with quality fresh seafood. The mussels marinières were absolutely delicious – perfectly cooked mussels in a flavorful broth. Great British seaside cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend for authentic fish and chips!

First of all, the mussels are the best I’ve had in the UK—so fresh and sweet! The bottom of the dish is filled with a creamy sauce, enriched with parsley and olive oil, making it both rich and refreshing. The haddock fish and chips are also quite good, with the haddock being tender and fresh. Everything else was enjoyable as well. And as a fun touch, the oyster shell used as a bill holder was adorable. I’ll definitely be coming back for those mussels!

This was a great choice for my first “fish & chips” in the UK. My only complaint is that the fish itself was very bland. Not sure if that’s normal or just this spot.
Everything else was great!
We enjoyed the oysters (we tried two types), cocktails (we tried three), and food overall.
We ordered the classic Cesar salad and the small fish & chips. The mushy peas were really good.
The waitress made me the perfect limoncello spritz. It made me do a happy dance, lol.
Also, great view from our table. Great choice.

Everyone we asked during our trip to Bristol told us to head down to the Cargo section of the city to enjoy the restaurant offerings. We originally were going to go to the poke place just a few doors down, but when we realized there wasn’t any inside dining option there we quickly settled on Salt and Malt. Their delicious seafood options drew us in right away and learning they are dog friendly sealed the deal for us. We’ll have to come back again for oysters as they had run out by the time we arrived to eat dinner. Not to fear however! The scallops appetizer and anchovies were lovely. The seafood stew I had for my main dish had an especially wonderful rich flavor profile. My husband enjoyed an Asian fusion style cod burger and chips. I also loved the spicy margarita that I tried. Our server, an Irish expat, was especially kind and took a genuine interest in engaging with us. We will definitely visit again when we come back to town!

I visited Salt and Malt today at 5 PM specifically for the advertised Oyster Happy Hour, only to be told by the waiter that they only had 14 oysters left. How can you promote a happy hour for oysters and not have enough stock prepared? This is extremely poor planning and misleading to customers.
To make matters worse, we were seated at a table where the sun was directly in our faces. A kind waitress offered to move us to a more comfortable table, but before we could settle in, a woman—who I believe is the manager—told us we had to move again because they were expecting a group of seven people in 20 minutes. So we were kicked out of a better table for a reservation that hadn’t even arrived yet. Absolutely ridiculous.
The service was slow, the food took forever, and overall the experience was chaotic and unprofessional. Management clearly prioritizes squeezing in more customers over treating current ones with basic respect.
Highly NOT recommended. Staff need serious training in customer service and table management. Total disappointment.

I live close by and am a frequent takeaway visitor. The staff are so friendly and kind and the food is consistently excellent, SUCH good chips! I have also sat in for meals when my parents visit and it is a lovely atmosphere, especially in the glass outdoor section. It is a great location by the harbour 🙂

Honestly, some of the best fish and chips you’ll ever have and a total 5/5. The only reason I am rating this down is because of one incident where the server woman with an orange “Karen” haircut turned me and my partner away from the takeaway, 20 mins before close. Even though her colleague said they could still serve us at the time… This left us feeling rubbish as they did not treat us with respect and there were still lots of other customers getting their order when we arrived…
All other staff have been excellent and never had a problem.
However, me and my partner still go here often (top 10% of customers according to google) as they make very tasty food and everyone has their bad days.
I’d recommend getting the food to takeaway, as the portion sizes are much smaller if you eat-in but it’s an experience I highly recommend for anyone in Whaping Wharf

Delicious and fresh seafood! Visited during the Bank Holiday weekend (lovely sunny weather :D). Booked a table in advance which I’m glad I did as was quite busy. Staff were friendly and food was delicious. The portions on the a la carte menu are quite small so would suggest trying multiple dishes :). Found the poached oysters very original 🙂
