My fiancée and I love sushi (we go to Sugarfish probably 2-3 times a month). We live much closer to Seabutter, though, and we hoped it would serve as a viable substitute. It also has a much wider variety of options (including cooked food).
We waited about an hour for a seat at the bar. The fish was quite good, but the rice in the nigiri was not sushi rice, and it was not served warm. It was wet and fell apart too easily.
The sashimi was very nice, and the crispy rice was excellent. The dragon roll was good, too. After our meal, we decided that if we came back, we would stick to sashimi, rolls, and crispy rice—no nigiri. The bill came out a bit cheaper than Sugarfish, too.
We drove about 8 minutes back home, and within about an hour of our last bite, we both succumbed to acute food poisoning. We didn’t eat the same things throughout the day—the only meal we had in common was dinner, and it struck us at exactly the same time and lasted the same duration. We have sushi all the time, so there’s no special sensitivities on our part.
Here’s what I can infer. The symptoms came on too fast to implicate the “typical” pathogens for bad raw fish (which can take 12-48 hours). So the fish quality itself is likely not to blame. By morning, we both now feel fine. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this likely implicates “preformed toxins/irritants,” pointing to unsafe or unclean food handling practices.
The staff were very nice, the food tasted pretty good, but food poisoning is totally unacceptable in a restaurant of this caliber. We will call the restaurant today to let them know—this needs to be fixed. Hopefully no one else got sick. We are fine, now—thankfully.
The sushi arrived quickly and looked great, however the food was soooo extremely bland and tasteless. No spice. No flavor. It needed soy sauce just to help it down. Roll after roll, and even the teriyaki chicken.
The best part was the service, music and hot lemon water. We are very disappointed with the food and pricing. We will never go back. Hope you guys can turn things around some day, for the sake of all others that may attend.
There isn’t very good quality control here. I’ve ordered avocado roll with jalapeno multiple times and 1/2 are done well and then the other half are done like this.
How hard is it to stay consistent with your food? Jalapenos go in the rolls just like cucumber or anything else, not just dumped on top.
However, I was surprised to see two oysters priced at $15 on the bill – that felt extremely expensive for the portion. I also wish the rolls were 8 pieces instead of 6 considering the price point.
Because we enjoyed dine-in so much, we ordered takeout yesterday and unfortunately the experience didn’t match. The sushi was placed in cake boxes, causing the rice to stick to the box, and the Dragon roll was very cold although we ate the rolls outside the restaurant. The langostino from the Mr. Crab roll was separated and placed in foil, which didn’t hold up well. I really recommend sourcing proper sushi containers for takeout.
I’ll definitely come back to dine in, but I was hoping this would also be a reliable place for takeout. For now, I’d stick to dining in – the prep and presentation are much better that way.
I ordered the beef gyoza, which were crispy with a mild beef flavor (could be better). The tempura was —crispy, tasty, and enjoyable, even if it wasn’t similar than the Japanese tempura. The sushi was okay, though a bit too spicy for my taste (at least the one I tried).
Of course the wasabi was not good, but is what you can get in 99% of the Japanese places at USA.
Overall, it’s an Ok spot to go , above average, nice to go with friends or family and enjoy a pleasant meal in a relaxed setting.
Service: The staff is friendly, attentive, and efficient–service was quick and on point.
Ambience: A small, cozy spot with both tables and a sushi bar. Parking can be tricky, depending on how busy the shopping center is.
The atmosphere of the restaurant felt like a cafeteria.
The sushi flavors are unique. Especially with the combination of lemon and truffle. However, the portion size is incredibly small, the smallest I’ve had at any sushi restaurant. The amount of fish to the other ingredients is negligible and very disappointing. In fact it was a challenge to taste and enjoy the fish because there was such limited quantity of it to the ratio of other ingredients in the sushi. It honestly felt cheap here… restaurant served small portions and little fish.
One of the highlights of the experience was the service provided by Lucas. He was friendly, professional, and polite throughout the entire dinner. I don’t even think he was our server, whatever his position or title is, he is a true MVP, fun polite, and just filled with positive energy that translated over to staff and patrons.
The sushi was some of the best I’ve had in a long time! Every bite was full of flavor and the portion size was generous. I would highly recommend the 911 roll and sunset roll.
From the atmosphere to the food, it was truly a 5-star experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to return and recommend it to others. A big thank you to Lucas for making it a night to remember!
P.S. the photos were from our first visit, the second visit was at a table, photos our from the sushi bar
The service, staff, and the food quality is constantly stellar.
If you want more “authentic” Japanese sushi, stick to the actual sushi and sashimi. From my experience everything on the menu is superb.
This location is often busy, but it’s worth the wait if there is one. Calling ahead to reserve a spot is always a good move just in case.
I have been going here for years. This restaurant has remained a top tier restaurant. I’m sure this will continue as long as they’re in business.
