Every so often you find a restaurant that makes you go: “Wow! That was unexpected!!!” This is one of those places. Given the location, and that on approach i looks like an office building, we were not sure what to expect but we were completely blown away by the taste of the food and will definitely be frequenting this place in the future!

Since this was our first visit, we decided on the stuffed pepper and their six piece pizza for the appetizers. While “only” three peppers came to an order, they were very large and we were happy to share them amongst the four of us. The pizza is a think-crust that they call Roman style, and I’ve seen referred to as Sicilian elsewhere. It’s also baked on a rectangular tray and is cut in squares. The six pieces were large! We could have stopped here and been full!

Of course we did not. We tried their Chicken Parmesan and it was one of the best we’ve had in the Southwest Pittsburgh area. The chicken was perfectly cooked and served crispy while the sauce was very flavorful and the cheese was delightfully melted over it. The same went for he Chicken Marsala which featured a wonderfully deeply flavored sauce and many quartered mushrooms which had been marinating in that sauce for a while, so they absorbed the flavors. The Funghi pasta was excellent as well and the mussels were good! Two of the entrees came with a side of Penne in their marinara sauce which is great, but as noted, way too much food. Oh yeah, there was also garlic bread! Definitely we took food home with us!

Nonetheless, we decided to try their Tiramisu and Cannoli. We went this way when the waitress told us they filled the Cannoli to order – a mark of people who know what they’re doing. We were not disappointed and both desserts were excellent!

They do offer beer and wine, but allow you to bring your own with a $5 corkage fee which is very reasonable.

Our waitress was excellent and about the only thing we saw that was not top notch was that all the food we ordered came out of the kitchen at almost the same time: Yep, appetizers and entrees all came trooping out at one time. Well, almost, the pizza – which we ordered as an appetizer – came out about five minutes after the rest of the food. We asked the waitress about this when she swung by and she just shook her head and apologized. It did not matter, we were already digging in to the deliciousness and this protocol infraction was quickly overlooked!

Ava Mae’s is a great place to stop! The food is consistently delicious, with perfectly cooked pizzas, fresh ingredients, and large portions. The most recent stop I had the chicken cacciatore (on special) it was delicious. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff is friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to have you there. Highly recommend supporting this fantastic local spot—you won’t be disappointed!

Delicious food! Great service and decent (PA only) bar. The pizza was excellent! Beans and greens, meatballs, and Bolognese were very very good! Salads were nice and fresh. Prices are great!

My husband and I went there and was extremely disappointed. I ordered chicken piccata, instead of coming with it on a bed of pasta. It was served with a bowl of penne with marina sauce on the side. My husband got cheese ravioli with added meatballs for more money. The ravioli came out with about 8 raviolis (very small portion). We both thought the sauce tasted just like jar sauce. Also the expresso martini tasted good but it was a splash in your mouth. If the pasta was served with garlic bread and a salad the prices would’ve made more sense. Also paying half gift card and the remainder cash there was a up charge for using a machine. It was a gift card my mom got me as a gift. That is not a credit card! My whole experience was horrible. Check out Union Grill in Washington. Not comparable at all. Same prices, bigger selection and the plates come out full with a salad or soup and bread!

Our first time at Ava Mae’s and certainly not the last! We got there at dinner time and they were very busy. There aren’t a ton of tables, but we were seated right away. We ordered a full tray of pizza – 1/2 cheese and 1/2 with sausage and weren’t sure what to expect but what we got was an incredible pie!

This pizza absolutely surprised me with how good it is! It’s super crispy on the bottom in the best way yet has a very soft chew. The sauce and cheese are on point, but the surprise bonus for me was the fresh basil in the sauce. Such a refreshing addition! When we got half with sausage I expected a few chunks of sausage but they really loaded it up. Worth the extra $3. I can’t say enough good about it. I also got a side salad which was good, but the ranch was excellent.

Can’t wait to go back!

Finally a good local restaurant in McDonald, Cuddy area. They have an outdoor seating area where dogs are allowed. Our overall experience was great. They have huge portions so great for sharing. I would definitely be back to try few more things on the menu.

The restaurant was easy to find and had been on our list for a while.

For the prices, the pizza was a bit smaller than we expected, but still plenty of food for three people with one 12 cut pizza (& a little left over).

The pizza was delicious and service was good. For a place with pizza in the name, I expected more specialty pizza options (there were none other than the special, which we got) & a larger list of toppings, but there’s something to be said for doing what you do well.

The women at the next table got pasta and that also looked delicious.

There was no cell phone service for us and the WiFi was locked, so I couldn’t check in there on Yelp or any other app.

There were TV’s on the walls showing the football games. Not all in the best places for viewing at the table we chose, but we didn’t really care about any of the games on at the time.

The parking lot had arrows about going only one way, but no other clear signage, so most cars seemed to not pay attention to the arrows. Not a big deal when it’s pretty empty, but I’d think it could be a bit dangerous if crowded.

We’ll surely go back to try the pasta.

First time visiting tonight. Great service from our waitresses, food was hot when we received it, overall excited to try them for pizza. We ordered the chicken parm pasta and the vodka pasta with chicken, both very good choices, a bit over saucey but not a problem. We did have an issue with our dinners coming out 25 minutes apart from each other which they apologized for and ended up taking a significant amount off our bill to make up for it.

Tonight had the Chicken Romano special, hubby had the Fungi pasta. Both EXCELLENT! Our waitress, Kadejrah was the best…friendly, polite, attentive, and knowledgeable. I recommend, and will return again and again. This really is a jewel of a Italian Bistro. OH, and my compliments to the chef’s!
