Reviews
I ordered the baked brie appetizer, beans and greens with chicken, and gluten-free chocolate cake. It was all fantastic. I highly recommend this giving this place a try. I can’t imagine anyone not loving it.
Will continue to return, thanks Brasserie Du Soleil!
I’ve been here a couple times now, so I think I have a bit better perspective of the chef. He/she loves sweated onions. They seem to be in everything. I like the flavor onion brings to a dish, but I’m more fond of an onion cooked longer. I like my sauteed onion to be browned & sweetened. Everything from French Onion Soup to Carbonara to the shallots in the Bearnaise and the onion in the risotto is less well-cooked than I would like it to be. The sauces themselves had good flavors. I was especially impressed with the incredibly thin house made linguine noodles.
Previously, I enjoyed the Brie very much. Although pricey, I thought the dish met my expectations. This time I got the scallop appetizer & I was disappointed to find 2 rather small, slightly underdone (better than overdone!) Scallops on a large amount of strong Cran -raspberry sauce for $14. The scallops & shrimp in my seafood vodka sauce linguine were perfectly cooked. At these prices, that was extremely important to me.
Dessert is a few crepe choices & a rich flourless chocolate cake. The Nutella Strawberry crepe is excellent. I wasn’t so thrilled with the Tiramisu crepe & my husband actually didn’t like the Grand Marnier crepe. It was sugared, a shot of liquor added & flamed. The crepes really need some strong or significant amount of filling otherwise they are rather eggy.
Having said all this, we had a good enough experience that we would go again as we do enjoy quality ingredients, freshly prepared in a nice atmosphere. We’ll ask more questions and perhaps request our preferences.
The problem with Brasserie Du Soleil is not the service or the quality of the food. It is the management. Who schedules one front of house person on a Sunday? Yes, there were two back of house staff members…but they can only do so much. Cooking, stocking, and washing glasses and plates (yes, they ran out) takes enough effort without having to try filling in up front. And while the food was good, it was obvious that corners were being cut. I ordered a Spicy Bloody Mary…it was great (three olives, bacon and other garnishes.) but the second one I ordered was warm and had only a stick of celery. Same person made both. They were doing the best they could in a losing situation set up by the management. It seems incredibly unfair to both the staff and the customers.
Such problems kill small businesses like this…good staff and product…poorly run. The prices (the drinks were ridiculously expensive ($10 mimosa in Greensburg?!?), the food reasonable) and the fact that our order wasn’t taken for 45 minutes…and another 45 minutes lapsed before our food began arriving didn’t leave us with the best taste in our mouth. We may try BdS again, but we won’t be trying brunch and we will call ahead to see if more than one staff member is on duty.
To today’s staff: good job…you have our sympathies. There are lots of good places hiring. Something to think about.
