I love history, the paranormal and a bar that is unassuming and I can relax and collect my thoughts. This is a must for any visitor to San Antonio due to it’s history and age. Teddy Roosevelt recruited several of his rough riders here. The most cattle deals in the state of Texas have been orchestrated here. History is literally in the bones of this pub and it’s just an amazing place for those who are interested in that kind of stuff.
Located conveniently in Alamo Square it is a short distance from several attractions. I wasn’t a fan of the cocktails but I did enjoy having a few cold brews. The staff were nice and I made it a point to visit later In the night on my 2 visits while in the area.
I especially liked the upstairs portion of the pub that serves almost as a balcony or overhang. I wanted to come out for a third visit but the closing hours are very early for a bar and I was unable to make it my last night there.
Lots of memoribila scattered throughout the bar, especially of Teddy Roosevelt and pictures of how the Alamo Square looked back in the time where the streets were dirt and the method of transit was by horse.
A must do when in San Antonio for any history buff. It’s also reputedly haunted but I did not have any paranormal experiences on my visits here. Maybe if they stayed open later

Amazing history inside this bar. Teddy Roosevelt recruited his rough riders here and the bar pays homage to that. We also enjoyed the famous mango ice cream that is loved by Bill Clinton. In fact, while talking to the bartender Justin, who was super friendly, Clinton even ordered 1500 gallons for his inauguration.

We stopped by for two drinks and talked with the bartender. There was no ghost in sight during our visit, but we did find out some of the lore behind the hotel. The rich history is a great way to experience San Antonio. The ranch water was tasty. This spot is highly recommended.

The history of this bar is really cool, the bullet holes from Teddy Roosevelt, the moose bust hanging on the wall and the dark and moody feel were great! The drinks on the other hand, were pretty terrible. It is a STIFF pour, so if you’re looking for a strong drink at a cheap price, this is your place! They were out of almost all beer except miller, you know what you’re getting and it was miller, sucks that was all they had for beer but whatever. I ordered a Paloma and holy carp! This was a glass full of tequila and a splash of super bitter grapefruit juice. The experience is fun, but don’t expect much for flavor.

Was told to take kids to get the famous Mango ice cream at this bar, so we did on our last trip downtown to enjoy a pleasant spring day. This hotel is a historic treasure that is fun to walk through and imagine the old days of SA. The atmosphere in this small bar has not changed over the decades. The ice cream is not cheap, but it is really good to enjoy from the balcony. Check it out!

Stop in and have a drink with Teddy Roosevelt where he recruited the Rough Riders. The bar is an exact copy of the London’s House of Lords Pub. The round table where Roosevelt recruited soldiers is now on the 3rd Floor of the Menger Hotel. Absolutely epic experience sitting where a large part of Texas history happened. Great staff with local brew on tap.

The second oldest bar in Texas and the spot where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders. If that alone doesn’t convince you to stop here then there’s no hope for you. It’s a great little bar with character and an attentive and friendly staff. The Alamo beer here is on point and it’s a nice spot to check out just steps from the historic church.

This is one of my favorite bars anywhere. Just the history alone is worth walking in.
Always love to have a Stella Artois or 2 here, and enjoy the balcony overlooking the bar. The moose and me…..we have a few stories to tell, and a few secrets not to.
