Growing up, jelly donuts were at the bottom of my list in terms of flavors. I would eventually eat one, but it would be my last choice. A Polish coworker told me about how beloved jelly donuts are in Poland and I was skeptical of how good a jelly donut could be.
Then I found myself at Kohout Bakery and I’ve completely changed my tune, because damn, the raspberry jelly donuts are ridiculously good. It’s the jelly. It’s a very good jelly. It’s not gummy or thick. It’s full of raspberry flavor and there is plenty of the jelly in each donut. Even a couple of days after purchase, when the donut is a little stale, the donut is still so good because that jelly keeps the interior moist.
Other items in the store are also delicious, including the cream cheese cookies. They are not too sweet and have a great balance of flavors.
The service is very friendly and helpful, always patient with me and my indecisions.
Be prepared to bring cash, but the prices are also very affordable, so you can still get plenty of treats for under $10.

To most Polish Americans, National Pączki Day means making a ton of these delicious sweets and binge-eating them. It is celebrated the Thursday in the week before Ash Wednesday, whose tradition is unique since it dates back to at least the Middle Ages, and is the perfect excuse to eat the famous and delicious Polish pastry.
Pączki, pronounced “poonch-key,” are Polish deep-fried donuts that are filled with some sweet filling such as jam, custard, lemon curd, or chocolate. They are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing, glaze, or dried orange zest.
Located on Jewell Street in Garfield, we’ve been coming here to Kohout Bakery for a couple of years. Greeted by the friendly staff, my partner and I were lucky to have the whole establishment to ourselves. Like a step back in time, this small bakery sells freshly made bread, danishes, cookies, strudel, and some deli meats. Patrons have raved about the perfect balance of flavors, particularly noting the distinction between glazed and powdered jelly varieties. We picked out a couple of their donuts, whose price was very reasonable and cash only.

Old world bakery, serving up fantastic jelly donuts. Highly recommend the glazed traditional jelly vs powder or mixed fruit jelly. Traditional seemed to have so much more filling. Nice crisp bite on the outside, definitely freshly made. Next time will need to get a sheet pan crumb cake, seemed like there were 4 different choices.
