As me and my wife were craving fish, we stubbled across Chef Joseph seafood on Google, located in the outlet mall in Norfolk, Va. When we arrived the owner greeted us and took our order in a nice timely manner. I ordered the flounder sandwich and my wife ordered the two piece fish with fries. It took roughly around like 6 to 7 minutes which, is very understandable being that the fish is made to order. I must say yes, it is a little pricey but you get what you pay for. When I say it was beyond belief on how great the fish was so well seasoned and fresh to the point it fell like it just melted in your mouth. After devouring both our meals, We continue to acknowledge the owner and how good the food was he proceeded to tell us his backstory on how he actually got started, how he was homeless when he first came to Virginia, and all he had was a dream, two fryers and some homemade hot sauce that he would sell. The story was very touching being that me and my wife are both foodies and we enjoy a life of cooking and catering to others. We will definitely be going back many and many days and years to come. Thank you Chef Darrell!!!

Ordered the 6 piece chicken strips. Not even sure I got chicken(if you look at my photos is like blended meat spit into shapes). Totally fake strips, expected real for the price and time spent waiting. Extremely salty and the fries are regular crinkle cut with way to much salt in the seasoning. I do not recommend waisting your money. Response to owner: Maybe remove the sign that say: No refunds, no exchanges, no exceptions. Not exactly a sign that makes an establishment seem open to criticism.

Oh yes ma’am, I’m from New Orleans and this plate is a 10/10. If you’re from the South and longing for a real down South catfish plate- this is it. Fish fried crispy, you don’t even have to tell em.

I ordered the 3-piece Salt & Pepper Catfish with fries for $17.99. The catfish was well seasoned and tasted really good — the flavor was definitely there.
However, I was disappointed with the portion. The “3-piece” meal appeared to be one fillet cut into three smaller strips rather than three full pieces, which was not what I expected for the price. It felt misleading and left me wanting more.
In addition, the service was not very welcoming, which affected the overall experience.
The food has potential because the taste was good, but I hope they improve portion clarity and customer service moving forward.

Shrimp and fry basket was at a good price. Shrimp had a slight sweetness to it and was pretty good. Was also cooked well. Fries even though was seasoned lack flavor and had an odd pasty consistency inside of the crispy outside and was really dry. I thought it was just me until my daughter said “why is it like this?”..lol. Service was nice and friendly at the register but changed at pick up which became unwelcoming. Looked as if another costumer made them upset so we just got the leftover feelings from that situation. Tip to travelers, basket meals do not get to go containers.

Stopped into the food court for after shopping and didn’t expect to dine until we saw someone else’s order lol. We were able to chat and ask questions about the food before we ordered and when we came back up to the counter the restaurant had just passed their health inspection.

I assume the staff who talked with us the owner and he was very personable and helpful. They have great specials so my boyfriend ordered the bay scallops special and I opted for the catfish and fries and added additional shrimp. We were told the food was fresh and he wasn’t lying. Everything tasted amazing and was seasoned perfectly and at a perfect temperature. I asked for my catfish to be fried hard and it was executed well, I ate my whole platter. We also enjoyed the bay scallops. 10/10 experience and would definitely dine here again!

Way overpriced, I got the three piece catfish and fries for 19.00. Fish pieces were about 3 inches long, over cooked. Update for owner: the pieces were three and two of the fish pieces look like they were the tail end. They are thinner. They in fact were over cooked for pieces that thin. The only reason you got three stars was because of the flavor. I paid just over 19.00 for the fish, fries, and a drink. Like I said overpriced for three small pieces of fish.

We were shopping at this outlet when my family and I got hungry. For some reason, this restaurant caught our eye, and the owner was eager to share his story with us. We soon realized we had chosen the right place for fresh food. The fish was clearly not frozen, and my dad was pleasantly surprised that they used fresh shrimp and fish. We all enjoyed our meal! We didn’t feel overly full since this was real, wholesome food, so we ended up ordering more.

The owner’s story about how he started the restaurant was very inspiring. He also makes his own homemade hot sauce, which I usually don’t like, but his hot sauce was really good—it had great flavor without being overly spicy. If they sold it by the bottle, I would definitely buy it because I loved it so much.

We also tried the crab cake, and it was amazing. You could tell it was homemade, not frozen. I’ve had frozen crab cakes before, and they don’t taste good, but this one was definitely worth trying.

Let me begin with a positive. I ordered the whiting sandwich which was tasty I must admit and it did not give me a headache. This meant that the fish was not overly seasoned with salt. With that being said, this one thing that initially turned me off was the fact that there was a young lady (light skinned African American young lady) that was being serviced when I stepped in line. The gentleman; whom I assume is the owner addressed the tall white gentleman behind me as he was finishing up with the young lady ahead of me. He never acknowledged my presence and yes I am a dark skinned Black female. He asked the tall white man if he had any questions about anything on the menu. They conversed about the menu and once he completely done with the young lady ahead of me, I guess because I was next in line he serviced me. He asked me what I wanted, I told him the whiting sandwich. He then asked if I wanted a toasted hamburger bun with butter or white bread. I guess I didn’t respond quickly enough because he asked me that question with a “tone” the second time. I stated I wanted the hamburger bun, but no butter. I waited for my food, received it and ate it. All the while I was ruminating on that first impression from the chef. All customers matter, no I was not a tall white man but I am a human being and did not deserve to be overlooked or spoken to in a harsh tone. To sum it up, I might go back there if I’m shopping at the outlet because like this time I am a diabetic who needed to get something to eat quickly; because I did think about stepping off and going elsewhere but my blood sugar dictated otherwise . Yes, I might go back but with a lot of food for thought for my next visit. I will remember that first visit and first impressions are lasting impressions. However, we all deserve at least a second chance to change that first chance.
Merry Christmas!
