Frontier Restaurant is an Albuquerque institution and a must visit when anywhere near the University of New Mexico. It’s a fun, quick service cafeteria style diner that is an anchor business on Central avenue. I think they’re sprawling. Dining room could also qualify as an art gallery for Americana John Wayne Western art. The real claim to glory for Frontier is the wonderful way they treat their employees and the way they support the community with several charitable projects. The cinnamon rolls are legendary!

Always a pleasure to eat here! their tostadas are cheap and filling, and their soda options are the best around! all the workers are very kind and accommodating, and while the parking in the back is built weirdly there’s always plenty of spaces.

Folksy, hometown restaurant where the employees are local people, students with terrific service. I ordered the vegetarian burrito with a regular soda and under 10 to 15 minutes I was served, eating a delicious burrito at a clean table. I like supporting family-owned restaurant.

We visited this place while visiting family in Querque and whats not to like? Food is good, flour tortillas are excellent, even took a dozen home for later. Customer service was prime! Loved the place and will be coming at least 3 times a year ❤️

Frontier came highly recommended to us, so we were genuinely excited to try it while in Albuquerque. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t quite live up to the hype. I ordered a chicken taco that was very wet, with what tasted like canned chicken and little to no seasoning. My sister had the nachos, which somehow managed to miss the mark as well. There was hardly any beef, and what was there wasn’t seasoned. The chips ended up soggy, turning the whole dish into a bit of a mess.
Overall, the food reminded us of something you’d get in a high school cafeteria rather than a place so many people rave about. To be fair, my sister, mom, and I were visiting from out of town, and we’re used to food scenes in larger metropolitan areas, so maybe our expectations were higher than average. That said, the experience mostly gave us a few laughs and a good story rather than a memorable meal. There was also a security guard lingering around who felt a bit out of place, which added to the odd vibe. I can see how this spot might be nostalgic or comforting for some, but it just wasn’t for us.

I was traveling through from Alabama and I was craving something local to NM. I asked a few local people for recommendations. I then ordered the Huevos Rancheros with “Christmas” peppers on top and a green chili cheeseburger (with corn tortilla for less carbs). Both were really good. I then went back for a bowl of the green chili stew, which was also highly recommended. I will say, the “pop” of vibrant flavors I was looking for wasn’t there, but the food was overall pretty good. Finally, I got a cinnamon roll for my wife back home. I sampled a bite while there and it was just ok, nothing spectacular. I’d visit again when passing through. There’s absolutely no way a semi-truck w/ trailer could fit here, but I was able to park with just my tractor a few bloakcs away. (I left the trailer at my delivery down the road)

The food is absolutely delicious! I got green chicken enchiladas because that’s what I always get when I go to a New Mexican restaurant for the first time. The flavor and tenderness of the shredded chicken took my breath away. They do not skimp with the chile or the chicken. The rice is well seasoned and perfectly al dente, not mushy or bland at all. It came with a freshly made tortilla and honey, essentially a personal size sopapilla. Also got the beef nachos on the side and even that was made with care and flavor. The staff behind the counter were efficient and kind and the staff out cleaning were so sweet and helpful. There’s so much sitting room and the decor is a great blend of rustic and nostalgic. I would definitely go back again and again!

The frontier has an amazing operation. It’s next to the main university of New Mexico campus and it’s obvious that many generations of students have brought their skills ranging from culinary arts to business to high tech have made the restaurant what it is today. For example, they have one of the first fully automated tortilla machines in the world where balls of dough are introduced at one end for fresh tortillas at the other. A line with wait times every 15 feet. A dozen order registers. At the pickup counter, I watched ten orders hit in a single minute, with one person tasked only to call up order numbers. Our order took less than five minutes. There must have been close to a hundred people working there. And … Yum!
