Social Profile:

Our circa 1796 hotel is steeped in history, being the boyhood home of our nation’s 15th President, James Buchanan — built by his father, James Buchanan Sr. Buchanan’s father opened a store, in what is now the Pub, and introduced young James to the problem of keeping things accounted for and in their proper places. By the time James was 10 years of age, his father was one of Mercersburg’s leading businessmen. When Buchanan was sixteen he left Mercersburg to attend Dickinson College. The Buchanan home in Mercersburg later became Hotel Mercer. Years later operating under new ownership, the James Buchanan Hotel is a staple in this historic town.

We came here on a Friday night because we saw that a musician we like was performing and we had never been here.

The bar is short so we sat at a table and there was no wait. The bartender was also serving with help from a few others. She took our drink orders and then our food order. We decided on the crab soup and we shared the chicken potstickers and crab dip. The soup was very good. The potstickers (sorry no pic) were good. I didn’t like the dip as much as the other food. It was too much cheese and not enough crab for me. We weren’t very hungry to start with either which is why we just got appetizers it in hindsight we didn’t even really need to get the dip, the rest was enough.

The staff were all friendly. The bartender was personable and attentive.

Of course the music was good and the sound in there was fine, not too loud, not a library. The atmosphere was laidback and easygoing. The building is historic and it definitely gives those vibes. I wouldn’t be shocked to find out there are ghosts or paranormal activity.

Prices were comparable to most other places. We parked out front on the street. If it was metered it was free at night. I don’t remember seeing meters but I may just have not been paying attention.

We would go here again.

We went there for dinner with family on a Saturday night. The environment was pleasant, with live music and a good atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food was a complete disappointment—so much so that we couldn’t finish any of the dishes. The pasta was poorly prepared, the chicken wings tasted like generic frozen wings, and the locally sourced steak frites, which promised a lot, delivered very little: low-quality meat that was overcooked, served with an excessive amount of pre-made French fries.

One of a kind experience in this area. Loved the history of the building and the atmosphere. Our server Monica was excellent and very attentive. Food was amazing as well. Not for kids. Definitely a date night place to just get away and relax.

Fantastic service by Ms. Lauren who delivered exceptional customer service from start to finish! The Salmon dinner over mashed potatoes & broccoli was exquisite. Wonderful atmosphere. The manager allowed me to tour the entire Inn while I waited for my meal. Really well done restruant & Inn to boot. I’ll be back!

We stopped here for dinner last night. Everything was amazing from the food, atmosphere and staff. It was our first time there. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The chef came out to meet us after learning it was our first time. We will be repeat customers.

What a lovely little restaurant! The food is great, the ambiance splendid! Feels glamorous, relaxed, and serene all at the same time. We live locally or we’d consider staying at the hotel. There’s a terrace out back that feels like a secret garden. There’s also a dining room with fireplace that you can rent for special events.

My daughter and I stopped in for lunch. We have always wanted to check out this place. Our meals were awesome! We ordered Max’s Crab Melt and the Blackened Steak Melt, both were delicious! I also ordered their “Smores” martini….oh so good! Our server, Taylor, was pleasant, giving us the history of the James Buchanan Hotel/Restaurant and surrounding area. The service was top notch! Yes, I will be returning to this charming place.

On Friday, Jan 20th, my wife and I and another couple stopped in for a bite to eat . To start with, it is small and kinda cozy . The sevice from the beginning was slow, but we soon figured out that there must be only one server on at that time . It was about 7 pm, maybe a little later . I will say the gentleman that seated us also was the waiter . He was very nice but he was very busy. I ordered a burger, which I thought tasted good . My wife got the Crab Dip as her meal that I thought was good, but a little salty for my wife’s taste . I’m not sure why, but the beer they had was all in cans, as was the soda . My biggest complaint was the price of my beer ! I used to work in a beer distributor, and I know what the cost of beer is . I love Troegs Perpetual and will get it every chance I can . But $9 for a 12 Oz CAN of beer is absolutely ridiculous. I get it every one needs to make some money ,but making 300% or more on a can of Perpetual is way to much . I myself can go into a distributor and get a 6pk of bottles 12$ to 14$. For that reason only I would not buy a craft beer from them . They could charge 5 or 6$ and still make plenty of money. I can go to Texas Roadhouse and get a 20 Oz draft Perpetual for less then $9 .
