Hanbat Restaurant (Duluth, GA) – Korean Food
Reviews
We ordered the 만두전골, which we enjoyed overall. The dish was comforting and satisfying, and it reflected the restaurant’s intention to present more traditional Korean flavors. However, the dining experience was unfortunately diminished by inconsistent service. At one point, the waitress did not respond to our questions at all. While it’s understandable that a server may not always have an immediate answer, not responding felt discourteous. One of our friends, who asked the question, felt particularly upset because it seemed as though his concern was simply ignored. Although another waiter later tried to make up for the situation, the service left much to be desired.
In addition, we felt that the food was somewhat overpriced for the overall experience. Given the intense and competitive nature of the restaurant industry today, service quality plays a crucial role in whether customers return. With some improvements in staff responsiveness and a slight adjustment in pricing, this restaurant could position itself more strongly. Without those changes, it may be difficult to sustain momentum in such a competitive market.
Immediately, my friend ordered the seafood pancake and I agreed with the decision bc HanBat’s seafood pancake consists of squid and shrimp, both of which I can eat. The $20 pancake is definitely meant to be shared, as it is stuffed with green onions, peppers, shrimp and squid in every bite. I personally would have preferred a thinner pancake that is crispier on the outside, but I understand the stuffing would have suffered with a longer cooking time. Don’t get me wrong; I still would order this every visit and could potentially eat the entire pancake as a meal alone, but it is an appetizer best shared with friends.
Next came our main dishes and we made the classic rookie mistake of ordering the same menu item instead of 2 different ones to share. We opted for the seolleontang, which, on this chilly afternoon, seemed perfectly fitting, as we also did not want any stews or hearty soups at the time. The seolleontang was beefy in flavor but could use a little bit of salt. I didn’t mind so much as my friend did bc I usually eat low-sodium meals. I liked that the soup had plenty of thinly-sliced beef which was cooked to tender perfection. The soup came with noodles and rice was on the side for your preference. Overall, not my favorite seolleontang, but I do like it enough to come back and try other dishes.
Now, the kimchi… What can I say that other reviewers have not? Probably nothing much bc as many have mentioned, the kimchi is made in-house. What a difference that makes! We kept asking for refills of the kimchi (thank goodness at no charge) bc it is that good. I think I liked the radish kimchi just a little bit more than the cabbage kimchi bc of the crunch and how the radish absorbed all the flavors so well. There was no weird after-taste and the spice was just enough to keep us wanting more; 10/10 kimchi.
I’d love to come back and try the galbitang and galbijjim as I venture on my quest to find the perfect galbijjim.
