This is a family business and they have been open for 35 years. Food is always fresh and the atmosphere will always feel like home. They cook a Cantonese style Chinese food with a tiny bit of American influence. They are labeled by part of the town as a Sonoma Staple. Lisa and David are the owners. Stumbled on this Chinese place after a long drive and wanted to get some take out.
I asked the lady helping us if there was anything Gluten free (made with Tamari)
I wasn’t sure if she quite understood because she quickly said yes yes we make everything to order. We were a bit reluctant to order because my husband has celiac but we went with a couple things to share.
I got wonton soup for myself and 2 dishes she said they could make gluten free. I found it interesting that the entrees don’t come with rice and you have to order the amount of rice you want. It also cost extra for chili sauce so you can see how quickly all of this can add up. The food itself was fine, wasn’t the best Chinese food or anything. I felt like I needed to add soy or more sauce to the dishes because they didn’t have a lot of flavor. Especially with them making them gluten free somehow. The white sauce was just ok ya know?
The thing I did enjoy most was the noodles with small pieces of bbq pork. The wonton soup had only broth and 2 wontons, that’s it. Every wonton soup I’ve ever eaten had more than that. Whether it be spinach, other veggies or even a couple shrimps. It was rather bland. We spent about $45-50

My husband and I had dinner there, the food was fresh and just right. They were very friendly! The seasoning was light and everything we ordered was very tasty.

Sonoma Happy Garden was our pick after a long week of dining out; we just wanted some easy Chinese takeout. The man at the counter was very kind and helpful, which we appreciated. Since we were staying in a hotel, we didn’t have basic utensils, so I’m glad I asked for plastic silverware or I’m not sure how we would’ve eaten. The food comes in traditional Chinese paper boxes rather than plastic containers, which makes it tricky to eat rice-based dishes straight from the container. Also, rice doesn’t come with the entrees and needs to be ordered separately.
We ordered the sizzling chicken and shrimp rice soup, which had pretty good flavor. The orange chicken also tasted good, but the pieces at the bottom were very soggy from sitting in the sauce.
Overall, this is probably a great spot if you live locally and can plate everything at home—or if you choose to dine in. For hotel takeout, it was a little less convenient.

We were looking for take out. Didn’t have to go far to get Chinese food. Was it the best I’ve ever had….. no, but it was clean and fresh. Knowing things are costing us a load more …2 large containers and small rice $40 plus. Forgot to ask if there is MSG… I will find out later tonight if my legs start to hurt…. Will revise review to let you know.

When I moved from San Francisco to Sonoma one of the first things I missed immediately was the variety of cuisines a city like SF has to offer.
Pot stickers and egg rolls are among my favorites for Chinese food.
And I am so pleased to recently discover and to know that there is a local restaurant that makes pot stickers and egg rolls just right.
It’s been from my experience that when the egg roll is crispy and fresh and the pot stickers are flavorful and not greasy, then that’s a sign that it’s a place to go for more food.
I will definitely be back for more. Thanks Happy Garden! Happy Garden does take out and you can call ahead of time.

Everything I’ve tried here tastes fresh and real. It’s the kind of place you’d pass by / take for granted in NY or SF Chinatown. But out here? You might remember: “I haven’t had the taste of real Chinese food, (prepared authentically) in a long long time … too long!”

No one was dining when I stopped by for takeout. When I asked for recommendations, the guy who took my order wouldn’t offer any. So lame. He also asked for a tip for takeout, which is a little presumptuous. I do not tip 20-25% on takeout, rather, 10-15%. I hadn’t even had the opportunity to try the food.
