I was expecting great things because of the summary. I didn’t see it.
We ordered two, 2 meat plates that had brisket, ribs, pulled port, and jalapeño- cheddar sausage.
The sides we sampled were collars, mac n cheese, baked beans, and slaw.
All of the meats were dry except for the pulled pork.
The pork was moist and had their unique flavor, but not much smoke. The lack of smoke can come from not enough during the cooking or from keeping it too long afterward.
Next best, but dry, we’re the spare ribs. We didn’t finish them. Besides the dryness, the sauce that was cooked on top of the ribs was cooked too long. Instead of caramelized, it was burnt.
The ends were dry and tough while the latest part was tender and still had a bit of moisture.
Brisket slices were from the point. It should have been impossible to dry out the point but the pitmaster succeeded. The brisket should have been the star of the show. We didn’t finish it. Do not get the brisket.
Sausage. Very tough and dry. Except for a few bites, it all went in the trash. Do not get the sausage.
Beans were the star. We rated them somewhere between great and perfect. Get the beans.
Collards also were fantastic. Do get the collards
There was nothing wrong with the slaw. It tasted cool, fresh, and had some crunch too it. I personally did not care for the strong tasted of celery seed in it, but you may like that.
Mac n Cheese was a fail. It was not warm, and when you tried to get some on the fork, it picked up the whole portion. Don’t get the Mac n cheese.
We went there during dinner on a Saturday with the mindset that this would be when the meat is fresh. I hope to go back one day just to find out if we caught them on a bad day.
Cedric took amazing care of us. He was attentive, warm, and genuinely thoughtful throughout our visit. Even though we didn’t have much time, he made sure everything was seamless and enjoyable.
Cassie, the manager, also came by and shared how their food is made from scratch and truly prepared with love. You can absolutely taste that passion in every bite. She even introduced us to one of their seasonings and gifted us some to enjoy at home — such a generous and memorable touch.
For a quick layover stop, we felt incredibly well taken care of. Exceptional service, great food, and heartfelt hospitality. We will definitely be back the next time we’re in town.
We managed to get thru the order line quickly and our food did not take long at all!
I was very impressed with the staff. They were very tentative and easy to locate if we needed anything, often checking on our table as they passed by.
Food was good and I do suggest you try the loaded Mac and cheese. I was not as impressed with the pulled pork plate as it didn’t stand out and could have used a little more shredding from the outside, but it was not bad at all still. Cheesy biscuits are a must!!!
I tried Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q (106 E Blackstock Rd, Spartanburg, SC) for the first time today and ordered the beef brisket (chopped and lean), macaroni and cheese, collard greens, cheese biscuits, and banana pudding to go. (Drive through)
The brisket was the biggest letdown, because I LOVE brisket, so I know good brisket. Even though I requested “lean”, when I got home, to dive in, it was overly fatty. I kept picking through it trying to find the meat, but eventually gave up. My husband pushed through his portion, but it wasn’t enjoyable for him either.
The mac and cheese looked a little questionable at first, looked not very cheesy-looking. After further evaluation, It was cooked, and the base/blend was a cheese sauce, but it didn’t have that creamy, rich flavor I was hoping for. Just okay.
The collard greens actually had a nice smoky flavor and were seasoned well, but they had a lot of stems left in them, and giving a pork after taste , which made them less enjoyable to eat, and I tossed them out.
The cheese biscuits were a pleasant surprise! They’re not like Red Lobster’s, but they hold their own. Slightly sweet at first, almost like Jiffy cornbread, and you can see bits of cheese in every bite. I’d definitely eat those again.
The banana pudding, it’s a firm… no. The first thing I tasted was all whipped cream. When I finally got to the pudding part, one spoonful was enough for me. It just didn’t taste like banana pudding should for me.
Overall, I appreciate the effort that goes into barbecue, and trimmings. But, for the price, I expected better consistency.
Makayla was our server and she did a great job on making sure we were comfortable.
The price kinda threw me for a loop but we haven’t ate out in a while and we enjoyed ourselves!
Their sauce is soooo good and flavorful, the mac and cheese was on point and very cheesy but the brisket was mostly fat and the meat we did taste was pretty good!
