When we walked in, the cashier was actively sipping on a drink while taking our order. While employees drinking may be normal in some places, it felt unprofessional especially in a food service setting.
The menu was also difficult to read due to poor lighting placement, which caused heavy glare. You had to physically move around just to see all the items. Once we placed our order, there was no explanation of how or where to pick up food and drinks. Drinks came out on one side of the counter and food on the other, but no one explained the process.
When our drinks were ready, they were placed on the counter without any acknowledgment no “thank you” or even eye contact. We then had to search for straws, which were located on a back counter near the exit. Not only were they plastic straws (which are required by NJ law to be kept behind the counter), but two employees were standing directly in front of them having a conversation. We had to ask them to move just to grab a straw, and they continued blocking the area while chatting for another 15 minutes.
The setup made little sense overall
especially since food was served in to-go paper containers. If everything is to-go style, the process should be streamlined and compliant with state regulations.
As for the food, we ordered the Kickin’ Chicken sandwiches. The bread was hard, and the sandwich was cold. If that’s how it’s intended to be served, it wasn’t communicated and certainly wasn’t enjoyable.
We stayed about 30 minutes to dine in, and only one other customer came in the entire time. With five employees on staff during a quiet Tuesday midday, the lack of customer service was very noticeable.
Overall, the experience fell far below expectations. The staff needs better training, better communication, and a stronger focus on customer service. I can see why business was slow.
I always get a large Americano and this one honestly tasted like coffee tea. So weak and watered down. My wife in all fairness liked her Vanilla Latte but called it average.
Service was again like a bagel deli more than a coffee shop vibe. They were doing their best running around taking orders for food and coffee with at least 5 people taking orders but only one making the coffees. I waited a full 10 min longer than my wife did for my coffee and had to remind them that I am still waiting. They said politely that they know and it’s coming.
Smart World Coffee is the kind of place where you know the coffee is amazing just by how busy it always is. Whether it’s your morning cup or an afternoon pick-me-up, the coffee never disappoints – rich, flavorful, and exactly what you need to keep your day going.
Despite the crowd, the customer service is fast, quick, and incredibly efficient. The staff moves with purpose and always makes sure you’re taken care of with a smile. And the owner? She’s absolutely wonderful – welcoming, kind, and clearly dedicated to making this coffee shop such a special place.
