Reviews
Umi – despite the Japanese word for “sea” – is actually run by a Korean family. Nothing wrong with this and we actually welcome some of the Korean twist and influence such as the spicy pork sizzlers – which is essentially bulgogi.
Given that this may be the only decent sushi outpost in a large radius, the fish was surprisingly fresh. The food was quite good with healthy mixture of veggies in their cooking. And like an outpost, they try to do a whole variety of dishes – rolls, udon, ramen, katsu, etc. – and in general succeed in creating quality dishes. For example, their Salmon Carpaccio with umami oil and jalapeno accent is inching close to a top-class dish. It is clear that the chefs are putting their best food forward.
Now there are 2 things that make this place trip over.
First, the service. We were literally one of the 2 tables that were dining. And there was a dedicated server – a blonde girl – that seemed to be in her first week of the job. Everything was slow as she sat around until I made eye contact. We literally saw our freshly cooked hot dish sit on the counter for minutes before she would go get it. We were really confused because how could the service be so slow and negligent when there was literally 2 tables for lunch. Recommendation is to hire a seasoned server and train the new staff.
Second, there are a handful ingredients that just do not belong in Japanese classical cooking. For example, you should not be putting broccoli on every other dish. It just isn’t a Japanese ingredient that goes well with anything Japanese. The udon had both broccoli and carrots… and chopped onions. This was in an udon. Same goes for the yakisoba. I think the chefs took some liberty in interpreting the receipes in their own ways but you just can’t mix any and every vegetable with certain dishes.
Other than that, Umi is slated to be a hit. Their currenting rating of 3.9 stars doesn’t justify their quality of food, especially at the price point they offer. I can easily see this place being a hot spot for sake and good food, overlooking the downtown square. This place has potential and the chef’s effort is commensurate.
However, we noticed several issues. There were tables that had not been cleaned and broken water glasses left around. The food looked appetizing and well presented, but when I tried the avocado, it was black and spoiled. My husband’s dish was extremely spicy—so much that it was not edible at all.
It’s a nice place overall, but unfortunately the kitchen seems to lack proper food safety and contamination protocols. I honestly think it needs an inspection. It’s not fair to pay for food that is spoiled or impossible to eat due to excessive spiciness—especially when sushi is supposed to be fresh.
What about you? How was your experience at this place?
A special shout-out to our server, Kayla, who is always amazing and made it a great visit. The manager went above and beyond by surprising my daughter with a gift card for her birthday, which made her feel so loved and celebrated.
We were happy to share the cake with the staff and are incredibly grateful for their hospitality. This is one of our favorite restaurants, and experiences like this are exactly why. Highly recommend!
The last time I was there, I was ignored while the waitresses were laughing and talking in the back. When she came over I got a wine, in the glass you see there. So that’s when I think ahhh yes, no training here as well. Definitely isn’t being stored correctly so I’m afraid you may be out put about the taste of some of these wines.
I feel like the place needs a new look. Now it’s not an old place. But they could do more with their seating arrangement. They have street-side windows next to some tables, but there isn’t much of a great view out of them.
And this is quite concerning as well as my girlfriend received a phone call 1 -2-26 and the manager basically downplayed everything saying that their young servers and they have been written up in the past. like Okay, that’s a reoccurring actions from them. Why are they still working here when they’ve been written up multiple times ,beats me. I guess we’re going to have to contact the better Business bureau and let them know about these instances. Sad
Must try: dancing on fire.
It’s like smoking the sushi with fire so it taste like smoked sushi and it’s really super nice.
The others sushi are also super nice: we tried Godzilla & spicy crunch shrimp.
Oh and the miso soup super super yummy!
Over $20 for a rice bowl and they can’t even put more than 3 paper thin slices of avocado. It’s absolutely ridiculous considering it’s one of the main components of the dish
Use a whole damn avocado for this bowl. I will order this 1 more times, if it comes like this again. Then you lost a customer.
