My favorite Puerto Rican restaurant in the state of Illinois. coming from a Rican, order a plato tipico and you’ll think you’re on the island. The best alcapurria de yuca I have had in the USA.

Sandwichon is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you know you’re in for a treat. I’ve had their steak sandwich and Cuban sandwich, and both were nothing short of spectacular. The steak was perfectly seasoned and incredibly tender, and the Cuban was a masterclass in flavor and texture – crispy bread, succulent pork, and just the right tang from the pickles. You can tell they put a lot of love into their food here. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is super friendly. I’m already planning my next visit because I can’t wait to dive into their breakfast menu. If you’re looking for authentic and delicious Cuban and Puerto Rican sandwiches, look no further than Sandwichon. Five stars all the way!

This cozy little café on Harlem & Schubert is a hidden gem—you might miss it if you’re driving too fast. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and you’re greeted with a friendly smile as soon as you walk in. The food? Absolutely phenomenal. The steak sandwich and Jibarito chicken sandwich were both seasoned to perfection, and the rice with gandules was just as impressive. Plus, their prices are very reasonable. Definitely worth checking out!

The absolute BEST JIBARITO de Lechon in all of Chicago. I’ve had Jibarito’s from every spot in Chicago and they are all 2nd to this place. The Lechon was seasoned perfectly, moist, delicious. It tasted like my abuelita’s on Christmas eve. I was shocked myself but my taste buds where happy. The atmosphere was fantastic. For a place I’ve never been to, it felt like it was owned by a friend. We were greeted, we engaged in a conversation with the host, we chilled and ate. Fantastic food. Great people and a very welcoming environment. Don’t sleep on this place.

I first visited this location on February 22nd with my daughter. We arrived early and ordered breakfast sandwiches, which were absolutely delicious—we even brought some home for the rest of the family. Since then, I’ve returned at least three times more and have consistently enjoyed the quality of the food.

This small, casual spot seats about 25 guests and offers a surprisingly wide variety of options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. Compared to other places nearby, it’s less crowded and much faster, making it a convenient choice for a great meal without a long wait. The location also offers ample parking and has gaming machines available for those who are interested.

Overall, it’s a hidden gem that combines great food, quick service, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Greetings my Foodzies; our newest cultural experience, encompassed Puerto Rican and Cuban food.
We went to Sandwíchon Cafe at 2651 n Harlem in Chicago.
This restaurant is tucked away in a small little mall slightly difficult to find but worth the search.
We spoke with one of the owners, Rafael who related that he and his partner Junior have all family working in the restaurant. Includingour server Thalia who was very knowledgeable about the food seeing that she grew up on it; she had a great personality and was very friendly. The interior is small, with a few tables, the walls are covered in cultural memorabilia as well as photos of the dishes they serve.
What this restaurant may lack in space it truly exudes in culture , available menu items and flavor. We started with a few appetizers: Sorurillo de maiz (basically a cheese filled, deepfried fritter) it was topped with powdered sugar. It was nice and tasty but a little dense for me. We also had a couple empanadillas; empanadilla de carne (had a light flaky outside with seasoned ground meat inside) the meat to shell ratio was off; needed a little more meat but the meat was seasoned well. Empanadilla de guyaba con queso (the outer shell on this was a little thicker and the cheese and preserves filling made it like a dessert empanadilla) it was very tasty also.
Our entrees included Carne Gulsada which is a cubed beef stew, the beef was nice and tender and melted in your mouth. It also had potatoes and a very tasty beef broth. It was accompanied with a bowl of beans and rice. This is a great comfort food for a nice cold night.
Next was the Bistec Encebollado, shredded beef sautéed in onions also with rice and black beans. The beef was tender, the onions were sautéed down nicely and paired well with the rice and beans.
We then sampled three different sandwiches; first was the steak Jibarito a sandwich made with your choice of steak, chicken or pork. The sandwich comes with lettuce, tomato, onions and mayo. Instead of using a bun, they used pressed plantains. The plantain added a nice crunchy texture, the meat was nice and tender, and the mayo, lettuce, tomato complemented the steak nicely.
Our next sandwich was a Cuban sandwich; this is a sandwich made on French bread with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, pork, ham and pickle. The sandwich is unique due to the mixture of the meats with the vegetables and the cheese.
Our last sandwich was my favorite; the Sandwichon sandwich (Steak, pastrami, ham, canadian bacon, grilled onions, swiss cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes on toasted French bread) the sandwich had everything, and it was a complete meal in itself. All of the sandwiches came with french fries.
I give this restaurant 5 stars, they also serve breakfast which we will have to try.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.

The food is very greasy, and unfortunately the service completely ruins the experience. The atmosphere is very bad because the attendants. The attendants a woman and sometimes a man are quite rude and treat customers poorly. They make you feel like you’re bothering them and give orders in an unfriendly way, such as telling you to throw things in the garbage. The coffee is bad, and the portions are very small for the high prices charged. Overall, the attitude is unwelcoming and uncomfortable. I do not recommend this place and suggest choosing a restaurant with better food quality and customer service.

I was excited when I saw this spot open. I’m a sucker for a good breakfast sammi and I love some Cuban food. Finally tried it out today sooo disappointed. Where do I start the portions very small for the price which I could overlook had the food been any good. I had the ham, egg and cheese sandwich it was the saddest sandwich I ever seen. It was limp one piece of egg, yellow cheese and ham thrown between 2 pieces of bread I also ordered the meat lovers breakfast burrito. The thing was tiny and most of the weight came from the grease dripping out of it. The tortilla was soaked in grease and oily and I couldn’t even finish it because there was so much grease accumulated at the bottom. I also ordered a coffee it was bitter I can make a better cup at home I can make a better breakfast sandwich at home. The food just lacked any type of effort. Really wanted to like this place but was very let down
