The conservatory was a really nice peaceful place to eat. The breakfast was really nice. I liked it better than the lunch. Breakfast felt like real food, whereas lunch felt like it was trying to hard to be fancy. Maybe it was just personal preference, the gnocchi looked really pretty but it tasted plain, I thought there would be more pesto in the sauce. It was fresh, maybe someone who likes healthier food and mushrooms would like it more than I. I had french toast with bananas for breakfast and that was very good. All of it was fresh, the sausages were real sausage links which was a pleasant surprise because often breakfast places will give you dry precooked patties. I would go again, for the peaceful breakfast. Maybe for lunch I’d get the pot pie instead, the person I went with liked their pie, said the crust was really flakey.

I also reviewed the inn, but the real, glaring issue is the restaurant. Setting aside the host, who was warm, friendly, and inviting, most of the rest of the experience is awful. Even with a $15 ‘Bed and Breakfast’ coupon, it was over-priced for what it was. (A true Western omelet would’ve been about $20-24 depending upon how you define it.) The breakfast service was neither friendly or unfriendly — just straight to the point and direct. Not necessarily a problem until later when we returned for our six o’clock dinner reservation. Again, the friendly host greeted us and seated us promptly. And then we watched servers approach other tables while completely ignoring us. One literally had to sneak behind me to serve the table behind me and didn’t even acknowledge our presence. Neither of the two servers in the room ever looked in our general direction. Mind you, there were six groups in the room, one of which was larger and left as we arrived. Another was seated at the same time we did. They got water and were greeted quickly.
I suspect part of the problem was the wedding in the adjacent space stretching the staff. I sympathize, but a restaurant should know its limits. If it can’t accommodate a wedding and regular guests, either from the hotel or the surrounding area, then choose. Either stop hosting weddings or close the restaurant altogether.
Nevertheless, after over twenty minutes of being ignored — we were never greeted or even looked at and certainly never got even water — we elected to just leave. Probably the most disappointing part was that neither a comment to the host, nor a call to the front desk, elicited sympathy. The host watched us leave without comment while the front desk offered to help us find another place to eat. They didn’t even seem concerned that their restaurant failed a guest. (A note that there’s not much in the area but the Sagamore was good. They also had a wedding, but had no issues providing top notch, friendly service in their restaurant.)

Unfortunately things at The Tavern have changed in what was our favorite spot for years to come in the winter. Portions have become skimpy. The Prime Rib is labeled as Grilled Prime Rib which is actually a ribeye steak thats worth about $18 not $46.

We were traveling with a tourist group staying at the hotel and we dined here twice. The first was a group dinner with a limited menu. I had the chicken pot pie, which was one of the best I’ve ever had. The pie was stuffed with large cuts of white meat and vegetables bathed in a thick, made-by-grandma tasty gravy all covered in light puff pastry. It was almost too much for one person. My wife had the filet mignon, a thick, massive, eight-ounce cut of tenderloin covered with a red wine sauce. She loved the filet but could only eat about half. Unfortunately, I was completely full of pot pie and couldn’t help her out. What a waste!

We had our second dinner the next night as a couple and sat in the garden room. The atmosphere was somewhat contemporary, especially being that the restaurant was in a historic hotel, with a great view of a flower garden extending completely on one side of the space. Although a bit slow, the service was satisfactory. My wife was not very hungry, so she only had the flat bread appetizer. It was excellent and she ate every last bit of it. Luckily, they still had some median-rare prime rib for me. It was cooked perfectly but was not as tender as I expected it to be. The taste, however, was very good. Still, I have to rate the prime rib just average.

The price for the flat bread was reasonable, but the prime rib was over-priced for the quality of the meat. Otherwise, my rating would be five stars.

Recommendation from a local and it was a great one. We dined on the tavern for brunch and it was such a great experience. We split the French Onion soup, some of the best we’ve ever had. My wife had the Panko crusted cod sandwich and I had the bacon jam burger. Both excellent. Worth the trip. Beautiful historical property.

Food was delicious. I’ll wait. Her was wonderful old school. Waiter knew how to interact with customers, how to run tables, how to please everybody and make sure things were on top notch. The three stars come from the two hosts that were taking names and reservations. My wife and I walked in unexpectedly no reservation so the gentleman younger gentleman behind the counter said to give him a few minutes about 15 and he’d find me a table. No problem. Told me to have a seat and I did after 25 minutes when up and asked how’s it looking and he asked me if I had a reservation again, the point is he completely forgot that he was helping us. Didn’t take our name. Didn’t remember trying to find me a table or not. His co-host was just as confused. Because when I was asked if I needed help and I explained to him that the other gentleman was helping me. This man treated me like I had snapped at him. Maybe I had and didn’t realize it. Again. Restaurant was good. Food was great. I’ll wait. It was great. The two hosts they need a cause and customer service. Maybe they were overwhelmed
