This is in elf those places that makes me ask “Are you sure this is vegan”? The jack fruit Birroa and mushroom asada have such great flavor and texture. I’m pretty sure non-vegans would be hard pressed to complain. It’s tucked into a mini food court in the “lobby” of the Imperial Motel. There is a bar in the place if you an alcoholic beverage with your meal. A must stop for locals and folks traveling though!

The food here is phenomenal! Like so, so good. However, you have maybe a solid 30% chance of them actually being open during their posted open hours. Today is my 5th consecutive attempt to dine here. I even called in advance to confirm they would be open (they were not the other 4). I drove 40-50 minutes, and when I arrived with my family, there was a To Go container saying “I’ll be back shortly.” No return time estimate or timeframe, nothing. To make it worse, there were two other parties, one of which had placed a to go order and had already paid.
Coming to Vegan Vato is a true culinary delight, but catching them actually open is the trick. Come here for sure, but you absolutely must have a backup option in mind.

The food was super tasty and service was pretty quick! We ordered the crunchwrap and the loaded fries. The restaurant is located inside of food hall styls space with a shared dining area. Ambiance was cute, retro 60s/70s vibes.

Amazing! We had a little smorgasbord to share so we could taste a few items. Jackfruit tacos are so luscious, a little kick of heat so flavorful. Beans and rice sides just as complex in flavor as the jackfruit. Burrito w beans, rice and cauliflower topped with red chili sauce. AND the Philly sandwich w Seiten so good it’ll satisfy any meat lover.

I wish I would’ve not given Vegan Gato 1 star. We were looking forward trying their food, and saw good reviews. Once we stopped by during the week and the place was closed (without any explanation). Second time we walked by, on Saturday, it was open! There were 4 people in front of us, we thought it would be quick enough. Ordered 2 same wraps to make it easy on the only guy working there. Still, waited more than 40 min to get our wraps. They were not crunchy at all (even though menu said “crunchy”), there were lots of corn chips on the side and NO salsa (even thought the menu said “salsa”). The warp was super salty. We tried chips and salsa, and salsa was so spicy! Luckily we had water with us to cool the heat on our tongues down… Will never go there again.

Great choice if you’re looking for vegetarian/vegan food in ABQ. Folks are nice and friendly. Food was prepared freshly and quickly. Taste, flavors and spice levels are awesome. We had Tacos, Burrito, Chalupa, and Fries – all items were great, tasty and at the right temperature. The restaurant is a small counter with the kitchen behind the counter, inside what feels like a food court.

I visited on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, and service was quick and friendly. I ordered the nachos not expecting it to be so huge, and it came with a choice of protein (at no extra charge); I opted for the asada. They were out of jackfruit at the time of my visit.

Located right off central, so parking might be an issue if it’s busy. The entrance is directly across the Imperial Motel check-in. There were other ‘restaurants’ within the building, but only one other was open. They have a patio overlooking Central.

***IF you decide to pay with cash, try to bring smaller bills and coins. We had an issue with buying a drink and the register had no change to break a $20 or $5. This was not a big issue, but thought it would be helpful to mention for people who still use cash.

I asked the owner for a recommendation and he suggested the Philly plate (cheesesteak style sub with a side of beans and rice). Normally I would have passed on a Philly sandwich but I took his word for it and WOW…I’m still thinking about that plate. The flavor of the mushroom/seitan blew me away. The bun was perfectly chewy. The beans and rice could have come straight out of an abuela’s kitchen. I had to go back the next day for a burrito (which smelled and tasted so delicious that I forgot to take a photo) and yet again the day after for a quesadilla. Everything was superb with incredible quality and flavor. The portions were huge and a great value.

Amazing vegan food!! Def worth a visit. If I lived in NM, it would be a regular stop. Amazing customer service as well. Wait can be a little long, but def worth it. Also, it is inside The Imperial, so it could be easy to miss.
