For me, Ajisai Sushi & Steak is a standout for sushi & teppanyaki in the Portland area.

We enjoyed hibachi twin lobster tails, shrimp, Japanese A5 Wagyu & tiger prawn, sashimi deluxe, Japanese salad with miso dressing, plus an abundance of shrimp fried rice and vegetables. Every bite delivered. The A5 Wagyu was perfectly marbled and melted instantly, and the sashimi was pristine and exceeded expectations.

Pricing is incredibly reasonable for the quality and experience.

All of the people were exceptional: the chefs, servers, bartenders, the owners, and support staff were attentive, engaging, and genuinely knowledgeable. Everyone had clearly tasted the menu and could make thoughtful recommendations that elevated the experience.

The space itself feels fresh and intentional — modern, warm, and far more chic than a typical teppanyaki restaurant. The artwork and architecture have real presence, and the high-quality exhaust system means no smoke, no lingering smells, and no “grill fatigue” by the end of the night…definitely a plus!

To be honest, Ajisai has completely changed how I think about teppanyaki (you can get exceptional sashimi, a selection of high-end adult drinks and even fresh boba for the kids or in our case the kid in one of us adults along with your top-quality grill dinner…what more can you ask for?) — this is a place we’ll be returning to regularly and recommending.

My mother and I decided to give this a try as we are always on the lookout for top quality Japanese cuisine, and this was certainly the winner we have been looking for. The interior was clean and inviting, and we sat at the bar right in front of the sushi crew. The first thing I tried was the strangely named but excellent tasting “Foodgasm” which included top quality ingredients. The tuna and the uni cut through the richness of the wagyu beef. This was accompanied by a sake flight generously poured by our server Jazz who was an absolute delight. My main course was a dragon roll and a fantasy roll, which combined great presentation with even greater taste. Don’t let the prices intimidate you; the portions and the quality are more than worth it. This was only our first try, but it certainly won’t be our last. If you like Japanese food or just good food in general, you owe it to yourself to visit.

WOW. Just tried Ajisai Sushi & Steak in Beaverton and I’m honestly blown away. The decor is next-level — so many thoughtful details, modern, clean, and absolutely gorgeous. It feels upscale without being stuffy, which is hard to pull off.

The food? Incredible. Everything was fresh and high quality, and the A5 Wagyu steak was cooked perfectly — melt-in-your-mouth good. And I have to mention the cocktails too — the one I ordered was seriously good and paired perfectly with the meal.

But the real star of the night was our hibachi chef, Chris. He was SO entertaining and had the entire table laughing nonstop. Dinner and a show, done right.

Amazing service, amazing vibes, amazing food. This place just opened and it’s already a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back (probably sooner than we should).

Foods great wagyu steak is highly recommend n must try. Great presentation. ☺️

Sushi disappointed it. California rolls, eel rolls and Alaska rolls look all the same.

They have kids menu but no booster for kiddos and no spoon and fork for kid. Adult fork really heavy and big for them to use. Highly recommend restaurant need to have kiddos spoon n fork. Lucky we bring our fork n spoon.

Happy to see the Now Open sign so we decided to give it a try. Turns out it was only their second day in business. The renovations were extensive and you would never guess it was previously a Cracker Barrel. One side of the restaurant is for tepanyaki and there were tables being used in the early afternoon. However, we were there for steak and it did not disappoint. I had the filet mignon that came with five courses and it was definitely flavorful. Service was fantastic and the sushi chefs are front and center as you enter. We will definitely return to try the sushi next.

We had spicy miso ramen, sashimi deluxe, spicy orange chicken, and kitsune udon noodle soup. The atmosphere was great, excellent decor, and service was prompt. Our server Mimi was very friendly and very knowledgeable.

We didn’t have reservations and only had to wait about 20 mins to be seated in fine dining section. We sat at the bar while we waited. Bar staff was friendly and attentive.
The restaurant is beautiful inside. There is a lot of marvelous wood work.
Once we were sat, we ordered our appetizers and meals. We had 2 surf and turns and one steak hibachi, which comes as a 5-6 course meal. They asked how we anted our steak cooked, which we asked for medium rare. We got out appetizers which were decent. We then got our meals. No soup, no salad. The surf and turf which says it comes with Tiger prawns and shrimp appetizer only came with less shrimp than just the steak hibachi meal did. There were zero prawns. The steak was all over cooked and chewy and had zero flavor.
They did bring out green tea ice cream, which was good.
This place is totally not worth the high prices they charge.

The food, chefs, and atmosphere are top notch, but our waitress, Sunny L., was absolutely horrible. My wife had to ask for a refill on a soda 6+ times and overall Sunny was rough with dishes and glasses and was not “graceful” by any definition of the world. Please train better.

Edit for response: thank you for responding and we will be back, eventually, mostly because these issues will take time to solve. The review will also be updated at that time. 🙂

We came in around 6pm to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant is beautiful inside and was starting to get busy when we arrived. The hostesses seemed a little stressed, but we were seated after a short wait.

Our server, Gemma (I hope I’m spelling her name correctly), was wonderful. She was attentive, kept us updated on our orders, and truly made the experience better throughout the night.

Unfortunately, there were several issues with the food. Two steaks arrived somewhat cold, and one order was incorrect (steak and shrimp instead of steak and chicken). The ramen dishes lacked flavor and were also slightly cold. The orange chicken was overwhelmingly spicy — even for someone who enjoys spice. My little brother’s meal was delayed and didn’t arrive until most of us had finished eating. The staff kindly brought complimentary edamame while he waited, which we appreciated.

They also brought out a complimentary ice cream for the birthday, which was a thoughtful touch.

Overall, the atmosphere was nice and the service — especially from Gemma — was excellent, but the food and timing issues made it feel like an off night. We’d consider giving it another try and would hope to have her again as our server.

Listen to the one star reviews and go to Benihanas! The worst restaurant experience my partner and I have ever had.

My partner and I made 8:15pm Valentine’s Day reservations for the fine dining tables. It was busy like we expected, but the line of people waiting to be seated before us was insane. You could tell the front desk staff (the general manager and hostess) felt very overwhelmed and customers waiting were getting impatient. People started leaving after waiting so long and children were already asleep in their parents arms. We waited in the crowd and eventually got seated at 8:50pm by the manager.

This is where things started to go wrong. By 9:20pm we knew what we wanted to order, but we still hadn’t been greeted by a server. Eventually a busser comes and gives us water, but we remain unnoticed. At this point the entrance had cleared, but at 10pm we STILL hadn’t gotten a server. The manager eventually noticed our empty table and asked if we’d ordered. We told him we hadn’t even had a server. He looked shocked, took our order himself, and offered free alcoholic drinks for the inconvenience. We ordered an edamame appetizer and two Filet Mignon & Scallops ($53 each -includes soup, salad, shrimp, veggies, sauce, rice, hot tea and ice cream) but asked for a couple min to figure out our drink of choice. He came back about 20 min later with our edamame, but didn’t follow up with us about drinks nor did he give us any of the included items that come with our meal.

Our entire conversation at the table had been about the negative experience thus far. It is clear that a lot of dedication went into the decor of the restaurant, but all staff seemed like they were untrained and unorganized. They all seemed like they were doing too much and not enough at the same time. The manager was all over the place and even the busser was setting tables to help out. It was clear at this point that they were understaffed, but it was also clear that the waitresses were unsure of what their sections were supposed to be. At one point, a couple left and their tip sat untouched for over an hour, as if no one knew whose tip it was.

I spoke to the couple behind us and asked how long they had been waiting since I could tell they were debating on leaving before getting their food. They said they had been waiting 2 hrs and their server had been neglecting them. They were also offered free drinks but said they weren’t that good. They eventually ordered their food to-go because they were unwilling to stay. We finally received our food at 10:40pm, almost an hour past closing time. Our meal included less than half of what we ordered, the quantity was minimal, while also being cold.

After eating, which took 10 minutes, we asked to see the manager rather than get the check. The manager eventually came over and immediately gave us our check but tried to act sympathetic by saying that he took off one of the meal prices to appease us of our frustration. He then insisted on us getting a bottle of wine. We explained that while we understood it was busy, the experience was unacceptable. Instead of taking responsibility, he blamed his staff and even said, “I might have to fire some employees after today.” That’s not accountability—and it’s not something you say to customers. The issue was clearly lack of training and preparation, not employees. After all the conversing with the manager, he essentially laughed it off and seemed more concerned about money than customer retention. We said we were unwilling to pay $53 for less than half of what we ordered—only then did he comp the meal in full.

We fully intended to spend over $150 and enjoy our Valentine’s dinner. The night could have been salvaged with genuine accountability and professionalism. We stayed as long as we did to give them a fair chance. We were patient and respectful—but there’s a point where poor service becomes unacceptable. If you have a bad experience here, stand up for yourself!
