Title: A Time Capsule of Culinary Confusion—Now with Extra Disappointment
Walking into this restaurant felt like stepping into a museum exhibit titled “The 1960s: Mold Edition.” The décor hasn’t been updated since bell-bottoms were in style, and the smell of old mold was so strong I half expected to see spores on the menu. Every chair had a gray smudge where countless hands have pushed off over the decades—think of it as their version of “patina,” but less charming.
I understand the original owner, Melvin, has passed away, and since his children have taken over, the standards have apparently gone the way of rotary phones.
Appetizers:
The Oysters Bienville were a mystery—mainly because I’m not sure an oyster was involved in their creation. The mixture was cold, flavorless, and could have doubled as wallpaper paste. Next came the honey-glazed pork belly, which was 90% fat and topped with what tasted like microwaved Sweet Baby Ray’s mixed with honey. If you’re into culinary plot twists, this was one.
Salad & Soup:
The Melvin’s Salad was decent—nothing to write home about, but at least it didn’t fight back. The shrimp corn soup was also passable, though I had to call in reinforcements (Tabasco) to give it a pulse.
Entrées:
The hamburger with onion gravy? Let’s just say McCormick’s gravy mix would have been an upgrade. The meat fell apart like my willpower at a dessert buffet. Then came the Chicken Francaise, which is supposed to be a delicate, lemon-butter masterpiece. What arrived looked like a chicken breast that had been seasoned in a lawnmower bag and required a samurai sword to cut. Chewy doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Sides:
The creamed spinach was the grand finale—a dish so confusing it deserves its own Netflix documentary. The top layer looked like someone attacked it with a blowtorch set to “industrial,” and the watery spinach beneath had me scanning for koi fish.
Verdict:
If you’re nostalgic for the ’60s and enjoy culinary surprises (the kind that make you question your life choices), this is your spot. Otherwise, bring a snack for the ride home.

Went for Valentine’s Day. Reservations @ 6:30. 2 1/2 hrs in we were frustrated no food. The server told us they could box it up to bring home! I got all dressed up to have food boxed up to take home. Really! Well about 20 min. Later we get our food and it’s cold. Last time we went the service was super slow. I’m over it. Got home 10 o’clock hungry.

Some of the tastiest and fresh fish is here. Just caught. Happy service is here too. Enjoy the view and a delicious cocktail. Fresh flounder. The landscape is a great collection of plants. Reservations are a must.

My son had his wedding reception at Melvin’s on the back patio and the dock. Although it was very hot because they chose an outdoor venue in july, it was a great setup. If you are considering renting the venue as an event, please check it out and be prepared to bring fans, portable air conditions, or cooling towers in the summertime. The buffet style food line went smoothly and the food was outstanding.

First time there with wife and another couple. The food was at best, fair. The crab patty was pretty much void of crab meat and tasteless and loaded with filler. I ordered a chicken dish and was served a chicken dish that I had not ordered.

We stumbled in after a long day of pirating for the Pirates and Boots festival. We were searching for some shrimp and grits and luckily it was the special of the day. Amazing food and the service was superior, even tho we were a bit under dressed for the occasion. Hidden in a beautiful location on the water.

As senior citizens, we wanted our wedding to be remembered by all in attendance as a magical day. Due to the destruction of Hurricane Ida, our choices for a location were somewhat limited. On a recommendation, we visited Melvin’s Restaurant where we sat and planned our wedding with Karla and Beatrice. They were cooperative, supportive and provided suggestions that were spot on.
Upon our arrival, we were excited by how our marriage ceremony location in the sunken garden was as we dreamed, magical in its design and setup. The reception’s private dining area and its place settings were both elegant and fitting.
Most of all, the food was exceptional. Guests enjoyed either steak or fish with great drinks. Everyone noted the quality of the food especially a 96 year old guest who has the reputation of being quite the picky one. The service during our reception was 5-star. Attentive, accommodating and pleasing are the words that come to mind.
Thank you Karla, thank you Beatrice, thank you Melvin’s for making our wedding day such a magical (there’s that word again) memory. We were not disappointed and we now look back with great memory of our time spent at Melvin’s.
