Griddle & Grits in Port Royal, SC is an absolute gem for breakfast! The pancakes are fluffy and delicious, the grits are top-notch, and the eggs are cooked perfectly every time. You can tell they take pride in doing the basics really well.
The wait staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Add in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, and it’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again. Highly recommend if you’re in the Port Royal area and craving a great breakfast!
The kids’ burger was undercooked. When I showed it to the waitress, she insisted it was cooked through and only slightly pink. I opened it further to show that the meat was clearly raw. She eventually took it back to have it remade, but after waiting for some time, we decided to leave and get a burger elsewhere.
Overall, the experience was disappointing and not what we expected.
I can tolerate long wait and slow service. One server on after the other was cut because of a slow first half of service. No worries, sometimes you roll the dice and it doesn’t land in your favor, I felt for our server, that’s a rough day!
What I can’t and won’t tolerate, is the complete lack of care and disregard in quality of food. When we got there they were just receiving food delivery. At some point after being sat and waiting for our coffee we watched one of the kitchen staff break down boxes and check in the order with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, right next to the patio where people are actively sitting and eating food. It’s blatantly disrespectful to the customer and the food to just casually smoke right next to the customer base trying to eat and enjoy their coffee.
The final straw was when we finally received our food, (brought by the lead cook, who’s thumb on the rim of the plate of the train wreck waffle fries was smothered in the gravy that I’m assuming he accidentally stuck into the gravy on my plate. C’mon man, seriously? No plate wipe? Open hands on ready to eat food?) and my wife and I noticed the mold toasted into the corner of the bread sitting to the side of the country fried steak.
Immediately, we pointed it out the the kitchen lead, who then without a word took it from
My hands and made a big show and dance of tossing it into the trees behind the building while jokingly commenting on “feeding the birds”. Nice dude, maybe anyone else might have given you a chuckle, but i wasn’t laughing. How many other people today did you serve moldy bread to that didn’t catch that?
After watching my moldy toast get lobbed into the trees, I guess the cook decided we didn’t need a fresh order, and we had to ask our server to get us some new toast. We were given a side of fruit later on along with the new side of toast I guess as an apology, I nice gesture, but at that point after everything we had seen I wasn’t really interested in anything he may have touched with bare hands. I ate enough to curb my hunger and left it at that.
This was our first experience at griddle and grits, we’ve wanted to try the spot out for a while. I get everyone has bad days, and I’m usually the type to give a spot at least two tries before I make a final decision on if it’s worth it or not, that won’t be happening.
I’m a professional chef, I’ve worked in kitchens most of my life. There’s plenty of things I would let slide, because hey everyone has bad days, some things just happen. This wasn’t that, this man does not take food seriously, and I can’t trust someone working in a kitchen that doesn’t. I don’t think we’ll be back anytime soon
Overall this place was just meh (fish camp has a better tasting brunch down the street on a Sunday). Nothing stands out and that makes this a place I don’t need to come back to which sucks because these are the kinds of places I prefer to support.
Definitely will be back.
