I had high expectations for our dinner at the Blennerhassett Hotel’s restaurant, given its reputation as one of Parkersburg’s premier establishments. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing and marked by a series of avoidable errors that reflected a breakdown at every level of service and management.
Our meal started off well with two fantastic cocktails, a bread basket, and a beautifully plated shrimp cocktail. However, things quickly went downhill. After a lengthy wait for our salads, the server brought both the salads and our entrées at the same time—a basic service misstep that should never occur at a restaurant of this caliber. It only got worse from there. My wife’s entrée was incomplete: one of the two side dishes she ordered—roasted Brussels sprouts—was missing, and the lemon garnish that should have accompanied her crab cakes was also absent. We only realized the garnish was missing when another guest, who had also ordered the crab cakes, was served his dish—with the lemon and two side dishes.
In contrast, my entrée—salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts and asparagus—was very good: well-prepared, properly cooked, and served exactly as expected.
The line chef inexplicably plated an incomplete dish, and the server failed to notice before delivering it. When we pointed it out, the server apologized and said she would retrieve the missing side. When the Brussels sprouts eventually arrived, they were undercooked—cold and mushy inside—and should never have left the kitchen. The line chef again failed to ensure quality, and the kitchen as a whole demonstrated poor execution.
The server returned to say the chef was sorry and that we would receive complimentary desserts as an apology. Yet, when the bill came, we were still charged for the carrot cake. I asked to speak to the manager, who listened to my concerns but explained that the restaurant had served 93 guests that evening. That number, in my opinion, is no excuse—especially given the many empty tables in the dining room. A restaurant of the Blennerhassett’s stature should be able to execute every plate flawlessly, regardless of guest count.
In response to the issues raised, the manager offered a modest $15 discount on the one entrée that was entirely mishandled and removed the dessert charge that never should have been applied in the first place. This was not an adequate resolution for a meal so thoroughly flawed. It reflects poorly not only on the chef and line chef, but also on the server and the manager, who had an opportunity to make it right and failed to do so.
This experience left both me and my wife completely dissatisfied. The Blennerhassett Hotel’s restaurant, which should set the standard for fine dining in the region, failed on multiple levels—from the kitchen to the dining room—and did not take meaningful steps to correct its mistakes. I expect more from a restaurant that aspires to excellence. They should expect more of themselves as well.
I had a dirty “Betty” martini at the bar and it was perfectly made and the bartender was great.
After that, my family met me for dinner and we sat in the dining room, where again, the decor and ambience were perfection.
We started with appetisers , the beef Wellington appetiser, calamari, and chicken wings.
The appetisers were all very good, and a nice basket with delicious biscuits and honey butter were delivered to our table.
Everything‘s slowly went downhill after that.
The first mistake, which we could have overlooked was that no appetiser plates were brought to our table for us to share the appetisers until we asked.
Next my mother-in-law and I received our French onion soup, which was not only slightly overdone but literally charred, it should have never, ever left the kitchen looking like it did. The fact that it left the kitchen looking like it did and then was also delivered by the waitress looking like it did was pretty amazing for a restaurant of this type.
We were willing to overlook that too, but I did mention to the waitress, who seemed a little inexperienced in fine dining, and she did offer to have another one that made for each of us, however she had also delivered our entrees at the same time and It didn’t seem to make any sense to to go backwards on our entire dinner at this point.
My entree was the most disappointing part of the entire meal, and completely inexcusable anywhere, especially in a restaurant of this calibre. I ordered the chicken piccata, one of my favourite dishes that I order whenever I see it on a menu and frequently cook at home. The first thing I noticed was that there seem not to be a single caper on my plate. I had to signal for the waitress to get her attention, she never came back to check on us after our food was delivered, to ask her if I could please have some capers because my chicken piccata didnt seem to have any. After a while, she came back from the kitchen and told me that they were out of capers, which I laughed at because that is one of the main ingredients of this dish, also the funny part was I had one small black item in my dish that I thought was a caper and when I tasted it, I told my husband that it definitely tasted like a piece of an olive, and then the waitress told me they were out of capers so they sautéed olives to make this dish! Again I laughed because that is absolutely not an acceptable substitution and when I said that the dish also did not have any lemon in it she came back and said head Chef was not working and the cooks told her they do not make chicken piccata that way with “lemon”. This also made me laugh considering the two main ingredients of chicken piccata are lemon and capers. I pointed out to her that their menu specifically did state that they use lemon and capers in their chicken piccata, but at this point, there was no use and I was the one looking like the difficult customer, when this was a situation that was as ridiculous as if I had ordered spaghetti and meatballs and received spaghetti with chicken in it because they were out of meatballs, it simply was not the same thing!
They did take the chicken piccata off of our bill which was the least they could do considering I didn’t eat it anyway. I cannot understand why I would not have been told that this dish was not available this evening, they did not have the proper ingredients to actually make it.
So overall great atmosphere, great drinks good appetisers but the rest ….unacceptable!
I’ll start with the good. The patio area is really pretty, it looks like they have a setup for live music (we were there on a Sunday of a holiday weekend, so there wasn’t anything going), the atmosphere is quiet and lovely, and the staff were helpful and friendly.
And the bad. This is not an inexpensive dinner, but the quality of the food does not reflect the price. I got the bourbon glazed salmon with bacon fried Brussels sprouts and a baked potato. The potato was hard in the middle, so I sent it back only to get another potato that was hard in the middle so I gave up. The sprouts might have once been in the same room as bacon, but I doubt it, and they had the same texture as if they’d been boiled, not fried. And the fish was okay. My husband had the chicken piccata with fettuccini, except his pasta was penne when he got it, the chicken was soggy and had no flavor, and the sauce was watery. But on the plus side, my old fashioned was decent.
In short, maybe come here for overpriced drinks and apps if you’re feeling fancy, but eat your dinner somewhere else.
