Mike and friends were out chasing smoke and savor today. We bundled up, braved the 40-degree gusts, and headed to Pepper Belly BBQ in Sanger, Texas… because real BBQ lovers know: weather is just a side dish.
And y’all, Leonard did not disappoint.
He welcomed us like old friends, served up stories about the BBQ biz, and laid out a feast that could make a pitmaster weep. The Pot Belly Plate was the star: ribs, brisket, sausage, turkey, pulled pork, two sides, and two slabs of bread that could double as pillows. Generous doesn’t even begin to describe it. The prices…..very reasonable as well.
My (Mike’s) rule of thumb? Judge a BBQ joint by its brisket and turkey.
Verdict: Pepper Belly is the real deal.
The ribs? Some of the best I’ve had in years.
The sides? The crew gave ‘em two thumbs up.
We sat at a picnic table, wind whipping, plates steaming, and not a single complaint. Just good food, good friends, and a new favorite spot. If you haven’t made the trip to Pepper Belly BBQ yet, go. It’s worth the drive, the chill, and every bite!!!
Thanks, Leonard, we’ll be back!!!
Guy knows how to smoke meat. Had the macaroni and cheese and the beans
Definitely home made beans. Couple tables out front. Pretty quiet spot, good place to enjoy a plate. Would definitely this magic again.
The food is a solid 10 out of 10. It’s 100% worth the drive. Whether you’re 30, 45 minutes, or even an hour away. Go try it. You won’t regret it.
Now, for the part where I can’t help but share more.
Pepper Belly BBQ is exactly what makes Texas special. It’s easy to get caught up in the giant, flashy BBQ joints with 3,000 square feet of space and 120 employees charging four times the price, but this is the opposite of that, in the best way possible.
It’s a humble little trailer that’s been retrofitted into a smokehouse, and everything is done on-site, by hand, by heart. It’s mom-and-pop, small-town, real-deal BBQ. The kind of place you want to support, not just because it’s small business, but because the people behind it are genuinely wonderful.
I had the chance to meet the owner, chat about his life, his wife, concerts, music, you name it. We’re probably 30 or 40 years apart, but we connected in a way that’s rare these days. That alone made the visit feel special.
And the food? Generous is an understatement. The portions are massive, the flavors are rich and deep, and you can tell there’s pride in every plate. Whether you get one, two, or three meats, you’re walking away with more than you expected, both in food and in experience.
Pepper Belly BBQ reminded me that the best things in life often come from the most unassuming places. Next time I’m craving BBQ, I’m not going to the spot down the road. I’m driving 45 minutes north, because this is the kind of place, and the kind of people, I want to support.
It was a cash only type of deal, but when I tell you the drive to the closest ATM didn’t make me forget about the smell!
Please drop by, this guy will take care of you and he’s super friendly. Make note of the turn into the little parking lot type deal. It was a great experience and I plan to be here more often.
P.S. the potato salad was great!
