I had the jerk chicken (mouthwatering and perfectly cooked), Mac and cheese (PERFECTLY made and very cheesy), and collard greens (genuinely the best I’ve ever had)
I urge you to stop by and pay them a visit – this is a delightful little spot in Johnstown and I hope this team gets the flowers they deserve!
One thing that was disappointing was the questionable hours on Google. It told me that they were open today, but when I went for lunch, the doors were locked up.
AFTER we had paid we were told that actually the buffet wasn’t available yet. There was only snacks available – think fruit and some chips and dip. We then asked how long until the food would come out and were told ten minutes. We asked again and were again told ten minutes. Asked again. Told soon. Headed for the exit and the door guard said not to leave yet because food would be soon. At this point I have the kind of pounding headache that makes me crave silence like the sweet release of death, and they were playing amplified live music so I said I’d just wait outside for a while.
A while later we saw food being put out, but were still told not yet because the chef wasn’t done with everything. So we waited assuming it would be only a minute. Nope, long wait again. So we went to the door and said we just wanted part of our money back and to leave. The door guard said we couldn’t get a refund, even 50%, because we’d eaten the appetisers.
Eventually I said I’d just leave a bad review and give up, so she went and fetched the manager and he was very understanding and apologetic, told us we’d get twenty bucks back and we could even get one plate before we left. Great! We came back inside to get our one plate. Then it was another few minutes while they found a spatula. Then they still tried to persuade us to stay longer because candied yams were coming soon. Nope… we needed to be out of here an hour ago. I’m sure the candied yams are good but I have places to be.
So after our one plate we got to leave, right? Nope. We asked the door guard, who took our cash, for our $20 back (we paid $40, getting 50% back seemed reasonable to me) and we’d be on our way. She acted like she hadn’t heard the manager tell us this, and refused to give us the money. Then she said she had to check with the manager to see if we could get our money back… and disappeared inside the kitchen. And so we waited. And eventually she came out and said he was busy and she couldn’t get his attention but if we waited a bit longer then maybe he’d come talk to us.
So one of us waits inside to see if we can get some money back, while I go get the car. I walked all the way around to the back parking lot, brought the car around and STILL no update. At this point we both left.
I am sure it was a great band, and I’m sure it was great food, but live music was the absolute last thing I wanted tonight. I wish they’d been honest with us from the start – we wouldn’t have gone in if we were told the buffet was not available yet, and we wouldn’t have stayed and eaten appetisers if we hadn’t been told it was coming soon. Nothing against the food/music but we were misled.
However if you’re in a hurry go somewhere else because they prepare most of it when ordered and the wait can be quite long, even when they’re not busy. The prices are unusually high for counter service, but the food is very good.
