We’ve been in a half dozen times over the last few months since rediscovering this location and have always enjoyed it. We (wife and two kids) find the food pretty good overall, though as vegetarians the options aren’t quite as extensive as we’d like.
The service, even when they were short staffed, has been great for the most part.
Admittedly we visit a bit outside of rush hour (typically eat around 5:30 because of small kids) but the atmosphere is sometimes a bit…dreary. I imagine things pick up later on and the overal vibe is pretty solid.

Great food, great atmosphere, and clearly a lot of heart behind this place.

I saw some people leaving bad reviews because the logo was made with AI. So in the spirit of fairness, I used AI to help write this review. My phone used AI to autocorrect it, Google used AI to help me find the restaurant, and the internet used AI to show me the drama about it.

Somehow the world kept spinning.

What actually matters is the restaurant itself.. the food is great, the vibe is welcoming, and it’s exactly the kind of creative local spot Santa Cruz should be supporting.

Here’s the thing: restaurants should be judged on their food, service, and vibe.. and The Salty Otter delivers on all three.

Support creative small businesses, ignore the internet drama, and let the otters cook.

I don’t even live near Santa Cruz but I read an article that complained about the AI generated logo leading to low star reviews. That’s absolutely ridiculous to judge a restaurant just by their logo. This made me come to the restaurant to give it a proper review. I had no problem with any aspect of the restaurant, food was great, service and atmosphere was good too. There is literally nothing wrong with this place.

As for the logo some people were complaining about the use of a river otter instead of a sea otter but I’m sure that was meant to be symbolic. It’s too bad the logo changed, I actually thought it was nice.

I really like the space they are trying to create! Pool and darts, and a lounge area and live music on Friday night. Had the nachos the first time, and the black bean burger the next. So good! I’ll definitely be back! Support downtown and local Santa Cruz businesses!

Had the best burger there! Bacon Bourbon burger (not 100% that’s the official name, but close) And looking forward to summer when they bring back the pineapple pico de gallo!!
I usually sit at the bar, and the service has always been great.

I was dismayed to see some of the negative reviews of this place. I’ve been here three times – once alone to watch the Niners, once with a friend to watch UFC upstairs, and once with my wife before a Santa Cruz Warriors game. The vibe was great every time and we had great service from bartenders and wait staff alike. I also thoroughly enjoyed my burger and fries on the one occasion I ate dinner there, and the appetizers at the Otter are lovely. We ended up winning a raffle for courtside SC Warriors tickets but unfortunately we were travelling during the game so we couldn’t accept. Anyway, this is now my go-to sports bar in Santa Cruz. I do think the AI otter logo wasn’t great but I’m sad the otter is now gone completely, it was very cute. Anyway, I hope this business succeeds and I’ll be going there for dinner tonight.

The chili cheese fries were great. The clam chowder was chunky and full of clams and potatoes, it might have had small bacon pieces. It had a nice smokey flavor. It was slow when we went in so service was great.

I’m not a beer drinker but I do like this place for watching sports and eating great food. The burgers are delicious and the chicken, bacon, ranch sandwich was so good. The grandkids had fun here too. The servers were super friendly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not necessarily a sports bar, but still have plenty of TV’s and the actual bar is decent sized…providing a number of seats. Lots of beers on tap is a definite plus! And for the people who are freaking out over the logo: Get over it! The fact that you posted negative reviews on Google/Yelp means that you use technology and aren’t opposed to that same tech making your lives more efficient. It’s hard as heck to open and maintain a profitable restaurant in today’s economy. Rate the restaurant on the food and service, not sign out front, shape of their glasses, or TP in the bathroom.

Came here for lunch. Got a cheese burger and soda. Burger came out okay, but was boarding cold. When I complained the server just shrugged. Burger would have been great if it was hot.

Also, what’s up with the AI logo? Why not pay a local designer for a proper logo? Maybe then you would have used a sea otter instead of a river otter.
