We had a fabulous experience here with chef Mitch Muroff. He’s a one man show, yet somehow still creates such an intimate environment where he has at least one conversation with each table and / or personally delivers a plate to the table. There’s an informative email / description on open table explaining timelines, restrictions, etc. Make sure to get there early if you want a welcome cocktail for the 6pm seating- you can order cocktails between 5:30-5:45, and they’re great! I loved the dragonfruit cocktail and it was a lovely start to the meal. ***Please respect the chef’s way of running the kitchen and don’t try to order a drink mid way through dinner while he’s working hard on cooking!*** Speaking of dinner, it was INCREDIBLE, very well balanced and the flavors were fantastic. The fresh local produce was the star of the show, and the sake pairing really elevated the experience. The first plate was light – a duo of a bright citrus forward green papaya salad which contrasted well with a rich creamy bok choy dish. This set the scene for a fresh lively tuna tartar. Followed by the main attraction, a perfectly seared moist and flaky white fish resting in a delicious mango miso sauce. After a quick palate cleanser of rice and homemade seafood soup, we finished with a delightful selection of fresh fruits and bite sized treats. My husband Marc particularly enjoyed the pickled star fruit.
Chef Muroff and server Celeste were diligently working to ensure customers were satisfied and well taken care of. Both were so kind and attentive. My husband and I even had the pleasure of speaking with Chef about some of his inspirations and passions which were the foundation of Aina. Overall GREAT experience, we can’t wait to come back and try the incredible food he has yet to create!!

Aina Kauai is unlike anything else on the island. A true owner-operator restaurant where Chef Mitch Muroff designs the food, the sake pairings, and the cocktails, and cooks in real time with intention and care.

Saturday’s Robatayaki dinner over binchō-tan charcoal is truly special—thoughtful, restrained, and deeply connected to place. This is dining for people who value craft and patience. Reservations are essential, and places like this deserve support. Thursdays feature a seafood-focused night. We’ve been to both. They’re exceptional!

After reading a lot of hype about this restaurant, some of it putting it on a par with Michelin rated restaurants, I long ago added it to my list. Finally, last month I dined here.

Perhaps my expectations were set too high, as I left disappointed.

I’ve dined at Michelin restaurants all over the world (United States, France, Italy, etc), and while the concept at this restaurant merits positive marks, the resulting dining experience was most underwhelming.

Food presentation was very good to excellent. Food quality was fine. Food quantity was adequate (with one notable exception), but for the price point could have been more generous. Service was abysmally slow. Value and experience was below average.

The cost of $125pp is the base before reservation fees, drinks, taxes, and gratuity. There is a $25 add-on charge for the Ama Eni (shrimp) from the neighboring island Niihau. Considering I was served only two lonely shrimp, I considered this to be surprisingly expensive.

This is a one man operation and owner/chef is involved in virtually every activity, thus the slow service. Yes, the website states be patient and allow for a 2.5 hour dining experience. Yet, as the chef prepares every drink individually, for every guest, all suffer the wait.

Additionally, as an example, the lone assistant who acts as a runner bringing out most dishes, hasn’t been trained to survey the guests for possible attention. After trying to get his attention for over 5 minutes while he studiously observed the chef prepare dishes, we finally got up to request more water. He then got the bottle from the fridge, but he had to wait for the chef to record the purchase into the computer before he brought us the water…. another 5 minutes.

While I don’t mean to disparage the efforts and intentions of the chef, it is important to establish the proper perspective before deciding to dine here.

We found this to be an amazing experience where every dish and cocktail was well thought out and executed extremely well. The owner / chef was extremely friendly and open to answer our own questions and others by the other guests. Definitely a great place to go to for a special dinner / event.

Small well designed restaurant in the heart of Kapaa town. There’s only one daily seating and reservations are required to dine. The chef’s tasting menu was excellent and the dishes were delicious and well balanced. It is worth noting that the chef works alone, and thus patience is required between courses, however, the food is worth the wait. Overall very enjoyable experience.

This is a one of its kind restaurant on Kauai. The attention to detail is outstanding. Everything made is fresh and local and is the kind of restaurant foodies will appreciate. It is expensive but frankly it’s worth it. Get there early for the 6pm seating as the happy hour drink menu is only available from 530-545.

Dinner was absolutely amazing! From start to finish, everything was perfect. The restaurant is beautiful, simple, and creates an intimate experience between you, the staff and the other guests, which we loved! Jess, our server was helpful, easy going, and had great recommendations for drinks to go along with our meal. All of the staff was helping and came over to our table at some point, they were friendly and seemed so happy to be there. The food from start to finish was amazing. The first course was a surprise and a beautiful palate cleanser, especially for Kauai. I tried to take photos of every course but I got too excited and started eating some before getting all of the pics. I can’t wait to come back. Getting to meet the chef at the end of the night was awesome, so kind and interesting to get a better understanding of his course. Such a beautiful, different experience, I can’t wait to come back!

This was an incredible meal and one of our favorite experiences on Kauai—rivaled only by the doors-off helicopter tour we took the day before. Most fancy dinners on Kauai are expensive, and most are mediocre. This one is different—it’s worth every penny and more. If you are booking one special meal on the island, let it be this.

Our nine-course, two-hour dinner felt like a beautiful meditation on Kauai’s most important and vivid flavors and culture, all through the lens of Japanese cuisine. Each course was a work of art in itself that told a larger and richer story. Yet, it certainly wasn’t style over substance—this is genuinely delicious food that we still can’t stop talking about.

Overall, we left feeling full, enriched, and more closely connected to the island and all that grows here. Elegant in the most understated and approachable way, this is probably one of the best meals we’ve had in all our travels.

This restaurant should have a Michelin star, maybe two? No Hawaiian restaurant has ever had one to my knowledge, and I don’t believe the judges come to Hawaii. In California it would most certainly have at least one star.

Cedar was our server and mixologist and was great. The Kama’aina (his creation) may be one of the most delicious cocktails I’ve ever had. The owner who’s name I didn’t catch was also very sweet and attentive. He has created a beautiful restaurant and a lovely experience.

We had a lovely meal. Wonderfully creative flavors and flavor combinations. A number of ingredients I have never had or tasted before.

Looking forward to our next trip to Kauai so that we can return.
