Chef Muroff and server Celeste were diligently working to ensure customers were satisfied and well taken care of. Both were so kind and attentive. My husband and I even had the pleasure of speaking with Chef about some of his inspirations and passions which were the foundation of Aina. Overall GREAT experience, we can’t wait to come back and try the incredible food he has yet to create!!
Saturday’s Robatayaki dinner over binchō-tan charcoal is truly special—thoughtful, restrained, and deeply connected to place. This is dining for people who value craft and patience. Reservations are essential, and places like this deserve support. Thursdays feature a seafood-focused night. We’ve been to both. They’re exceptional!
Perhaps my expectations were set too high, as I left disappointed.
I’ve dined at Michelin restaurants all over the world (United States, France, Italy, etc), and while the concept at this restaurant merits positive marks, the resulting dining experience was most underwhelming.
Food presentation was very good to excellent. Food quality was fine. Food quantity was adequate (with one notable exception), but for the price point could have been more generous. Service was abysmally slow. Value and experience was below average.
The cost of $125pp is the base before reservation fees, drinks, taxes, and gratuity. There is a $25 add-on charge for the Ama Eni (shrimp) from the neighboring island Niihau. Considering I was served only two lonely shrimp, I considered this to be surprisingly expensive.
This is a one man operation and owner/chef is involved in virtually every activity, thus the slow service. Yes, the website states be patient and allow for a 2.5 hour dining experience. Yet, as the chef prepares every drink individually, for every guest, all suffer the wait.
Additionally, as an example, the lone assistant who acts as a runner bringing out most dishes, hasn’t been trained to survey the guests for possible attention. After trying to get his attention for over 5 minutes while he studiously observed the chef prepare dishes, we finally got up to request more water. He then got the bottle from the fridge, but he had to wait for the chef to record the purchase into the computer before he brought us the water…. another 5 minutes.
While I don’t mean to disparage the efforts and intentions of the chef, it is important to establish the proper perspective before deciding to dine here.
Our nine-course, two-hour dinner felt like a beautiful meditation on Kauai’s most important and vivid flavors and culture, all through the lens of Japanese cuisine. Each course was a work of art in itself that told a larger and richer story. Yet, it certainly wasn’t style over substance—this is genuinely delicious food that we still can’t stop talking about.
Overall, we left feeling full, enriched, and more closely connected to the island and all that grows here. Elegant in the most understated and approachable way, this is probably one of the best meals we’ve had in all our travels.
Cedar was our server and mixologist and was great. The Kama’aina (his creation) may be one of the most delicious cocktails I’ve ever had. The owner who’s name I didn’t catch was also very sweet and attentive. He has created a beautiful restaurant and a lovely experience.
We had a lovely meal. Wonderfully creative flavors and flavor combinations. A number of ingredients I have never had or tasted before.
Looking forward to our next trip to Kauai so that we can return.
