This is our second time here. The first time, our experience was great, delicious food matched with efficient and fast service.
Unfortunately not this time. We were group of 4 and we had the social menu. We came at 20h00. The restaurant was rather full. We were not served any appetizers like other tables. We made our choices of dishes quite quickly. The 1st and 2nd courses came quickly but we had to wait more than half an hour (probably close to 45 mins) without any explaination.
In the end including ours, there were only 3 tables left. Thus we were wondering why it took so long for the 3rd course to arrive.
We would understand if sometimes problems can occur but it would be much appreciated if we were given some explaination.
The staffs that served our food made it looked like it was normal to make us wait that long without any apology.
The fresh sea bass and the scallops were something I would die for (PS: I don’t even like fish in general!).
All the main courses came with steaming hot plates, which was definitely a plus.
The sesame ice cream was very unique and definitely worths a try.
The owner was very friendly and introduced us a lot of stories behind the dishes.
If I have to be picky: The appetizers we had (duck and salmon) were just average. The duck’s fat can be further removed to get rid of the smell/odor of the duck meat.
Overall, 9/10 experience.
I would also recommend eating in over takeaway; it is much better!
We were three people, which meant six dishes per round, and it turned out to be the perfect way to sample a wide variety of flavors. The food itself was outstanding: a vibrant Asian‑fusion style with thoughtfully crafted dishes and portions that felt just right. After three rounds, we were perfectly satisfied without feeling overwhelmed.
Every dish had its own signature touch, and you could tell how much care went into the preparation. Overall, it was a delightful dining experience. I highly recommend this place and will definitely return.
We got the Lunch Classic 2-Course: 2 dishes per person per course. In general the food was tasty. Some dishes needed improvements. Service was fine. The only minus point was small portion. Recommended!
A short stroll from Maastricht’s railway station – hardly the setting where one expects culinary finesse – Umami presents itself as a most agreeable surprise. Initial doubts arise, as they often do in such liminal spaces: too close to the commuters, too near the noise. Yet, upon entering, one finds a room of quiet confidence — understated, composed, and tastefully restrained.
The kitchen practises a modern Asian fusion, mercifully free of the gimmickry that so often mars the genre. Here, flavours are precise, textures assured, and presentation refreshingly uncluttered. The sea bass ceviche is clean and deftly balanced; coconut prawns offer a pleasing harmony of crispness and gentle sweetness; while the tuna tartare speaks in elegant simplicity. Only the lemon- shellfish fails to quite keep pace — competent, though lacking the sparkle of its companions.
Prices are moderate, the cooking confident, and the experience altogether civilised — a combination that makes Umami well worth a detour, or indeed a deliberate pause between trains.
Verdict: A discreet and well-judged establishment that reminds one how satisfying it can be when culinary ambition meets quiet good taste.
