Adding On: My 3rd time here. It’s not just a TexMex place. The food is amazing. Today we had seafood tacos, penne vodka with grilled chicken, and my cheesesteak egg rolls and wings for the football games. Everything was delicious. No BS.
The atmosphere is cozy and inviting in the best way. Rustic without trying too hard, comfortable without feeling ordinary. It’s the kind of space where you can relax, take your time, and actually enjoy the people you’re with. Whether you’re stopping in for a casual night out or a special dinner, it feels personal and unhurried—like you’re a guest rather than just another table.
What truly sets Rustic Tavern apart, though, is the service. The staff is attentive, friendly, and genuinely invested in making sure your experience is a great one. There’s a sincerity to how they interact with guests that’s hard to find these days. You can tell they take pride in what they do, and that pride shows in every detail—from remembering returning guests to making thoughtful recommendations.
There’s a heart behind this place that you can feel. It’s not flashy or pretentious—just authentic, welcoming, and done right. Rustic Tavern is the kind of spot that turns first-time visitors into regulars, and regulars into friends.
If you’re looking for a restaurant with great service, a cozy atmosphere, and a true personal touch, Rustic Tavern is absolutely worth your time. It’s a Hopatcong gem and a place you’ll want to come back to again and again.
When we first walked in I was surprised to see so much staff in the front room but it did seem that 3 of the 4 high top tables were cluttered with staff papers and just not very kept. We did come between lunch and dinner shift hoping for better atmosphere and typically better service. Also as you walk in there are 4 high tops with no seats, maybe for guest standing room once the bar fills up? I’m not sure but there is too much clutter the moment you enter. The wall in the back dining room has an extended outlet with 2 drill holes in the wall. The faux brick wall doesn’t seem to be complete with the mesh backing showing through. I feel bad that the contractors that were hired did such an incomplete job. Along with each of the booth seats to be covered in plastic as to prevent getting any wear or potential damage from diners. But it did seem weird. Why order an animal hide fabric booth cushions if you don’t want guests to be seated in them or feel the need to protect your investment and have them completely covered in plastic. The back fixture had a bulb out with plenty of staff available to change it. Who knows maybe it’s faulty.
Now as for the food… left much to be desired. I read multiple reviews stating mostly how amazing their empanadas were and that they were homemade. So that’s what I decided to order. The menu stated you get 4 but a line was crossed off and now you only get 2 empanadas for $12.99!!!!! What?! But ok I figured if they’re homemade such as at Chapalas it’s worth a shot. But even for that price at chapalas you get 3 that comes with guacamole and sour cream. Here they wanted to charge you an additional $0.50 for just chipotle aioli, basically spiced mayo. So I asked for sour cream and guacamole which I fully expected to pay for in addition. As for the flavor it was bland. The menu states it’s seasoned but that’s not the experience that I had. It did have some chopped up veggies in it but that’s all. As for the price it seems pretty ridiculous to charge $12.99 for only 2 empanadas that are flavorless and even still with no sauce for dipping of any kind.
Now onto the cocktail… $14.00 for what I’m going to say was approximately 2.5 ounces. A typical martini glass is 3-4oz. With a 2.5-3oz. pour. A typical margarita is 6-8oz. Which just simply wouldn’t fit in a martini glass and let alone with added cubed ice! This is completely insane for the price Especially considering I did not taste an ounce of the Tanteo Jalapeño Tequila that was supposed to be used. I did ask the waiter when ordering if I should chose between the flourless chocolate cake and he decided to share his personal preference for flourless cakes in general. I’m sure it was truthful but never something that you should ever say to someone who is potentially going to order it. I did decide to order one of their premade and apparently frozen desserts, it came to the table completely frozen.
We will not be back anytime soon. They have a lot left to be desired and fixed with both the food and education of their staff. Good Luck in the future!
Best empanada I’ve ever had, perfect crust.
Just went for $2 taco Tuesday. Had beef taco and pork taco, both delicious.
