Great food & service that’s worth the drive. Recommend the prime rib & the chicken cordon bleu. FYI, the restaurant is in a rural area so cell service is very weak.

Critic’s Corner for Wednesday

This week my dining companions and I chose Thunderbird Restaurant and Lounge.

When I was a young man The Thunderbird was THE place to go for a classy night out in this area. Back then it was in the height of its glory days.

When we 1st arrived and parked in the front of the building I noticed that the once beautiful and inviting landscaping was in disarray with rotting wooden ties falling onto the parking area and the steps going into the building were in such badly need of repair you had to be very careful walking up them to get into the building. Needless to say it needs more than just a little TLC. If you are not careful those steps could be very dangerous.

We arrived early for our reservations and went into the bar for cocktails before dinner. One could either sit at the bar or sit at tables or booths adorned with Lennon table clothes. Our bartender was very attentive And friendly.

When it was time to eat and meet the rest of our group we entered the dining Hall. … It is a large impressive area. But I’m sorry to say that there was a terrific musty smell that permeated the room. I’m sure It has something to do with the the restaurant being closed for three days a week.. It could use a proper airing out to eliminate the odor.

Our waitress Was very kind and efficient In fact she was charming.

Our meals ranged from steak salad, Oscar salmon, roast beef, veal parmesan and steak and shrimp. Two of us had Onion soup to go with our dinner.

The Onion soups were served very Hot and looked very inviting, however I found that it was too salty for my taste.

The Oscar salmon was exquisitely prepared With a hollandaise sauce topped off with broccoli instead of Asparagus which was fine with me.

I heard no complaints About our meals. The presentation of the food was 2nd to none.

Over all we had a very pleasant evening, However the falling railroad ties and the disarray of those steps going into the building , Along with the musty odor in the main dining area has dampened my recommendations.

The once shining star and toast of Dining cuisines in our Immediate area has become a diamond in the rough.

This was my first time eating here. The service was beyond what I have ever had before. The French onion soup was to die for. This was the first time I ever tried that kind of soup. The cheese sticks were awesome. And the famous prime rib hhhmmm the words to describe it. All I can say is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. The food was served quick. We ordered our appetizers and it was only a couple minutes and they were brought out. About the time we finished the appetizers our main course was brought out. All the waitresses and the bartender worked together. I was beyond impressed with this restaurant and would DEFINITELY recommend anyone to stop and have an amazing meal. I’m already wanting to go back.

Great old school steak house feel. Not a chain so you can expect a little local charm. Would highly recommend. Little pricey but not so much more it takes away from the experience. Good service. We had a waitress and 2 others making sure we had drinks and checking on the table at all times.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in the door is the musty smell and dark, 1970s atmosphere. The staff were so very nice, we decided to stay and try the food. Nothing to write home about, and a bit pricey, but it was OK.

The Thunderbird in DuBois: A Fading Echo of a Bygone Era

As I pulled into the familiar parking lot of the Thunderbird, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. This place had once been a beacon of fine dining in our little corner of Pennsylvania, a destination worthy of life’s most special occasions. I remember the excitement of my pre-prom dinner here, decades ago, when the Thunderbird stood proudly alongside Johnny Garneau’s in Clarion and the Gold Eagle in Brookville as the triumvirate of local culinary excellence.

But times have changed, and the landscape of our cherished eateries has shifted dramatically. Johnny Garneau’s and the Gold Eagle have long since shuttered their doors, their very structures erased from existence like so many fond memories. The Thunderbird, however, has endured – or has it?

As I stepped inside, the air felt heavy with the weight of years gone by. The once-gleaming decor now seemed tired and worn, a faded reflection of its former self. The buzz of excitement that used to permeate the dining room had been replaced by a quiet resignation, as if the restaurant itself knew it was merely going through the motions.

I decided to order their “Famous” prime rib, hoping to recapture a taste of the Thunderbird’s former glory. The cut itself was nice, a glimmer of what once made this place special, but not seasoned well. The accompanying vegetables were a stark reminder of how far the mighty had fallen. Frozen and woefully under seasoned, they were an unacceptable addition to what should have been a standout dish. The lack of care in preparation and seasoning spoke volumes about the current state of affairs.

Our server was attentive and professional throughout our meal. They were knowledgeable about the menu, offering helpful suggestions when asked. The service was prompt, with our orders taken quickly and food delivered in a timely manner. Our server checked on us periodically to ensure everything was to our satisfaction, without being intrusive. Overall, they contributed significantly to making our dining experience enjoyable and smooth.

In a world where trendy farm-to-table bistros and hip fusion restaurants now capture the imagination of young diners, the Thunderbird stands as a bittersweet reminder of a different era. It’s a place that exists more in the realm of nostalgia than in the present, clinging to life through the patronage of those who remember its heyday.

As I left, I felt a pang of sadness for what once was and what might have been. The Thunderbird may still stand, but like so many landmarks of our youth, it serves more as a monument to the past than as a vibrant part of the present. In a way, perhaps it’s a fitting tribute to those golden days – a place where we can return, if only for a moment, to the time when a night out at the Thunderbird was the height of sophistication in our small-town world.
