Experienced the downtown Sacramento restaurant week and it was so good. The service was top notch. We had Fabiola and she was wonderful. The serving sizes were ample and you didn’t feel stuffed but satisfied. Great job Octupus Baja!!

I’ve participated in Dine Downtown for several years and was really looking forward to trying Octopus Baja tonight, but unfortunately, it was a major disappointment from start to finish.

The Atmosphere & Service: The restaurant is quite small and the tables are very close together. While a seafood scent is expected, it was quite overwhelming. The service was the most frustrating part–we were essentially “asked to leave” by a second server because they needed the table for other reservations. She didn’t realize we had just ordered a second round of dessert, but it felt incredibly rushed and left a very bad taste in our mouths.

The Food: We chose this spot based on the online menu, but be aware that the Dine Downtown menu offered in-person was much more limited (only 3 entrees and 1 dessert option).

Drinks/Apps: The “spicy” Michelada had no heat. The oysters were very small and lacked flavor/mignonette, and no Tabasco was offered.

Soups: Both the clam chowder and the elote soup were completely under-seasoned. The elote soup was a pureed consistency; we were hoping for actual corn kernels for texture.

Entrees: Both the salmon and the Baja Arrachera (steak) were overcooked. The “prawns” on the steak were just small shrimp, and the plate was overwhelmed by an excessive amount of beans.

The Saving Grace: The dessert was the absolute highlight of the night. It was moist, flavorful, and so good that we ordered a second one (which made being asked to leave even more awkward).

Summary: I’m not sure if it was just an “off night” due to the rush of Dine Downtown, but between the overcooked food and being pressured to give up our table, I don’t think I’ll be returning.

We had an excellent dinner here. It was early Friday evening and we sat at the bar since we did not have a reservation. Sandy was great! We enjoyed soup, shrimp tacos and Mahi Mahi tacos. Good choice. We are wimps with spicy, so we asked for no Aleppo and sauce on the side. The Mahi still had sauce but spice not too bad. Very fun. Kudos to Sandy for making it a fun experience.

I’d been curious about this place since I kept seeing them at the farmers market promoting their restaurant, so I finally stopped by after work.

They offer a Happy Hour menu from 4–6pm, but I found the food options pretty limited, so we decided to order from the main menu instead.

The oyster shooter wasn’t what I expected—it was just an oyster with green salsa, no alcohol or juices to balance it out, which made it hard to swallow. We also ordered a dozen oysters. While they tasted fresh, I really wish they were served on a bed of ice. By the time we got to the third or fourth, they had warmed up, which made them less enjoyable. The cocktail sauce could also use a little more brightness or spice to elevate the flavor.

The ahi tuna was heavily coated in hot spices, so all I could taste was pepper instead of the natural sweetness of the fish. The broccolini came out room temperature and lightly seasoned—I had to ask for hot sauce to give it some flavor. The braised octopus was tender but under-seasoned and also served lukewarm. For a main course, it felt incomplete—it was just two small tentacles with no sides or accompaniments to round it out.

Overall, the seafood here didn’t quite meet my expectations. Personally, I prefer oysters cold and served on ice, tuna that highlights the freshness of the fish rather than masking it with spice, and hot entrées to actually arrive hot and paired with something to make them feel more substantial.

On a positive note, the drinks were great—refreshing, fruity, and not overly sweet, which I really enjoyed.

We went to octopus Baja on May 25th. Getting around to reviewing this place today.

Overall the experience at octopus Baja was good. The Ambiance of the place is very energetic and inviting. The timing went was at the beginning of the dinner rush. We were greeted kindly by the hostess who told us our table would be ready in about 10 minutes as they were clearing it up. Also in the background there was a nice level of music that was definitely high energy but wasn’t so loud that you couldn’t hear you’re self-talking

Regarding the food everything was definitely good for me it felt like there was a little bit of flavor missing depending on the dish.

For example the fish stew that I got, you can definitely taste the use of paprika and that is mostly what I could gather from The taste profile. A little bit of a citrus or a little more salt would have helped balance out the flavors a little bit more.

The grilled octopus was grilled well and again it needed a little bit of something like maybe an extra citrus salsa or a little bit of a vinegar based sauce to bring out the flavors.

The scallops though chardwell it was not what we expected as a scallops were cut in half. again the flavor was there but because they were cut in half they were a little rubbery which scallops shouldn’t be.

Fish tacos generally good and that one actually was done well as it came with accompaniments of salsa.

Are drinks definitely had some nice flavor to them. For our taste though, they were a little bit on the sweeter side which is not my preference. If you like sweet drinks then you may enjoy them a bit more.

Overall, I would say check out their happy hour or do a few shareable bites to get your opinion on the food because again everyone has their own preferences.

Had a 4 course meal for Dine Downtown. Our group got 4 different cocktails and they were all delicious. The oyster sauce was fantastic. The clam chowder might be the best I’ve ever had. The salmon was cooked perfectly. I don’t know what the dessert was exactly, but the little tiny peanut butter balls on it were super fun and I am still trying to find out what they are so I can make them at home.

10/10, excited to go back soon!

What a gem!! We have nothing but good things to say about Octopus Baja! Everything we ate was delicious, fresh and PACKED with flavor. I think I will order the Agua-Chile and the Blue Fin tostadas every time I come here! The sauce the came with the clam appetizer was incredible (but the clams were so tiny that we would skip this one next time… I’d love to have that sauce again though- it was so tasty!) our server was wonderful and the speed with which our drinks and food were served was incredible!

The whole vibe was perfection from the sea blue glassware and rustic blue serving plates, to the nautical painted walls and the soft wicker lighting which was also on point with the Spanish seaside feel of the place. A new favorite for sure. We can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the delicious menu!

We went on a double date with our friends who recommended Octopus Baja for our night out, and now I can totally see why! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted so warmly. The menu is simple in the best way, with amazing options.

I ordered the Blue Fin plate and it was absolutely fantastic—so fresh. My Mexican Old Fashioned was just as good. My husband had the shrimp cocktail and a michelada, and both were incredible. Our server was so passionate about his craft—he even shared that he uses 14 ingredients to make their michelada, and you can truly taste the difference.

We loved every detail. Highly recommend this spot. Enjoy!

Wish i could leave zero stars. Came here for the Dine Downtown promotion and was incredibly disappointed.

1st course – the oyster shooters were not cleaned properly and needed lemon. Didn’t taste as fresh as im used to.

2nd course – soup was okay. (I got the sopa de maiz)

3rd course – my hubby got the arrachera (steak) and it was somehow burnt and cold at the same time. We told our waitress who brought us back a different plate, still cold. Then she brought back the original plate, still cold but my hubby was over it at that point and just accepted his cold steak. Shrimp lacked flavor. Beans taste canned.
In an attempt to get some flavor, we ordered their chips and salsa. Big mistake. The “salsa” is just tomato sauce. They might just have Ragu back there honestly lol.

4th course – a shared butter cake. Yummy.

We asked the waitress if she could remove the chips & salsa since we didnt eat it and its NOT salsa. She said she would ask to take it off but ultimately couldn’t. $5 for a bowl of Ragu and some hard chips.

Oh – and they add an extra 3.5% to their bill for “kitchen retention”. Gotta love greedy owners who cant pay their own kitchens so they make their customers do it… yuck.

Overall : we wont be back. Ended up paying $110 for 2 meals that werent even worth $20. Super disappointed.

Great food and service in a Coastal Baja atmosphere. The happy hour menu is where it’s at – the dishes are half the price of the regular menu and the portion sizes are the same. I sat at the bar and got great service and recommendations. I recommend the blue fin tostada. The menu isn’t very big but everything on it looks amazing.
