I don’t like giving bad reviews but our experience last night, September 22, was so bad I must and hope those in charge make some changes. Bottom line if an establishment cannot process food orders in a timely manner they shouldn’t. We got plenty of excuses why it took an hour after ordering before getting our food and then didn’t even get what was ordered. The burger special was okay but the fries tasted fishy. The walleye fingers were very fishy tasting and I ordered 6 drumsticks and got 2 see picture attached. All they would have had to do was communicate from the get go that they had a new cook, a small grill, were out of food, or whatever. This was our first time at the Mahtowa Travern so without having a previous good experience here it will be extremely difficult to stop again.

Tucked away off the beaten path, this spot is a delightful surprise. I stopped in around 4pm for a casual get-together with a couple of friends during happy hour. There were just a few other groups, which made it feel relaxed but lively.
From the moment I walked in, the bartender greeted me with a genuine smile and immediately asked how many more would be joining—menus in hand and ready to help. That kind of attentiveness really sets the tone.
The food was fantastic, the service was spot-on, and the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming—something I always look for. The space itself is a comfortable size, not too dim, with just the right level of background buzz.

The delicious smell of fresh burgers on the grill, lured me over. Other than the Anchor Bar in Superior, this is my new favorite burger joint. Can’t wait to return and bring friends. Great waitstaff and awesome locals. All around wonderful experience.

Liked it! Support your local bar! Went in for the first time, and they were about to close WAY early because it was slow. They stayed open since we were there, and wouldn’t you know it but some more people showed up. They must have heard that some awesome out-of-towners were there. You’re welcome 😉
