If you’re looking for a place that combines heartwarming hospitality with unforgettable flavors, this family-owned restaurant should be at the top of your list. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed like an old friend. The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between cozy and vibrant — a space clearly cared for with love and pride.
What truly sets this place apart is the food. Every dish tastes like it was made from scratch with family recipes passed down through generations. Whether it’s a slow-cooked entrée, a fresh salad bursting with seasonal ingredients, or a decadent dessert, each plate is packed with flavor and soul. You can taste the difference that care and tradition make.
The staff, many of whom are family members, treat you like you’re part of theirs. They’re attentive without being intrusive, and they’re always happy to share a recommendation or the story behind a special dish.
Dining here isn’t just about the food — it’s about the experience. It’s the kind of place you find yourself returning to again and again, not just for the meals, but for the warmth it brings to your day.

Rockin Horse Cafe & Wild Stallion Lounge
Rockin Horse Cafe & Wild Stallion Lounge has been an invaluable partner for Northern Transcon Railcams – Otter Tail Channel (@NTR-OTC) for the past few years. They host one of our cameras on the Detroit Lakes Subdivision, which is one of the ones the CPKC Holiday train goes past. We greatly appreciate Rockin Horse Cafe for sponsoring our camera and enabling us to run our live stream 24/7/365.
In addition to our cameras, the dinner and breakfast specials at the restaurant are fantastic. Be sure to check on Facebook for specials. Personally, I love the burger and fries for 5 bucks—it’s a satisfying meal. I’ve been wanting to try their breakfast special for the longest time but haven’t gotten there yet. One day I will.
They also have live entertainment sometimes in the evenings. For a place off the beaten path, it’s worth making a short detour for sure.

We have tried 3 consecutive times to enjoy the food, drinks, and meat raffle.
Although they have good food; we have had a longer than normal wait time for the server to come to our table and say hello or I’ll be with you in a moment, to being served a drink and food order taken. Unfortunately every time there has been only one bartender and no back up that person to help when it gets busy. As a customer, you need the acknowledgement that you in their establishment.

I have totally enjoyed every meal i have ever eaten at the Rocking Horse Cafe. The Cook on Wed thru Sunday is the best. She is polite and if you ever have a special request or an issue with anything She will take care of you. I visited the region in 2013 and this was my first visit. Since then I have been back several times and moved to this area. And all I know is when this Lady cooks everything is amazing.

Terrible service and food! I visited this shack in the early evening and ordered a steak on the menu for approximately $20. The waitress first asked me if I knew that the steak was $20, I replied, “Yes, I can read!”. The steak came out with possibly 4 oz. of meat the remainder was solid fat. I was disappointed and may have complained but the waitress never returned. I walked to register where a 2nd employee took my cash payment. I exited the restaurant sat in my car and a 3rd employee came running out towards me waving her arms, so I unrolled my window. She proceeds to accuse me of walking out, without paying. I told her I paid cash and I left. If you want bad food, being accused of skipping bill or just plain bad service visit this dump. TERRIBLE ESTABLISHMENT!

We had a party of 10 to 15 we asked if they could accommodate that large of a party. They sat us at 2 different tables, so we had to talk around other customers that wasn’t in our party. They only had 1 waitress, there was a gentleman that stated numerous times that he doesn’t wait on tables. We sat almost 2 hours before our food came out, an half hour to order drinks. We were not offered refills on drinks (soda and milk), and had to ask for refills on coffee. I really wanted to give Rockin Horse Cafe a rave review, but I just cannot. Granted they were super busy on Father’s Day, I had seen a few tables that walked out without even being noticed. Tables that wasn’t even waited on, no service at all. Once we got our food, there was some mistakes.

When you live in a small town, it’s the little things that matter like the people, atmosphere, service and of course the food. This place has all of that and more. The fried chicken is AMAZING, people come from all over just to get a taste. They do only (usually) have 1 cook, 1 waitress and 1 bartender, so sometimes you need to be patient, but these girls can handle it and they will get to you! The schedule does change with the season (most places around here do), so if you aren’t familiar with their hours of operation, just call first. It is strictly cash at the register, but yes, they do have an ATM on the bar side. It is a bit of a “ma & pa” kinda place, but that’s a good thing in my opinion. I’m originally from Wisconsin, moved here a few years ago and this place reminds me of home; you walk in and everyone knows your name, says hi and waves! It’s great! Come check it out!
