We enjoyed dinner on a very quiet Wednesday evening that presented the perfect opportunity to get to know all the staff. We sat at the kitchen counter so we got to watch everything being made and ask questions. The Exec Sous for the restaurant group was on duty that night and he was a real cool person and a great chef too. We had a great time talking with him through the night.
The food was amazing – very authentically PNW style very nicely done. A lot of Italian influence with an elevated styling. We got three of the starters but wanted to order all 8 or so because they all sounded good. The Rigatoni was excellent as a pasta and the wagyu steak and black cod were excellent.
The bar team and servers were also very attentive, fun/funny, and knowledgeable in their craft.
We got bread service and Waygu tartare to start. The honey butter go the bread was divine! That touch of sweetness with the butter was scrumptious! The tartare was a tad too onion-y and the chips that was served with it was soooooo salty! Almost inedible.
For our mains, we got the Rigatoni and the Pork shoulder, which were nothing memorable. The pasta itself was cooked perfectly, but the flavors were just okay. The rigatoni was made with Njuda, which I felt was barely there. The pork chop was very fatty, but had good flavors and was cooked perfectly. It was served with these giant beans, which had lackluster flavors. I wish it came with some sort of salad or a nice acid touch somewhere, but it just felt a bit heavy and one-note.
Overall, it was just okay. I appreciate the excellent service, though.
Overall, I enjoyed myself. The bread app is my favorite in this franchise of places. Their house made bread is top notch. It’s so enjoyable for me, that I ordered the bread plate again – for dessert. Haha 🙂
In general, the pasta was good, but for being house made pasta I don’t think the pasta dishes were the showcase. The appetizer snap peas…. The best snap peas I’ve ever had in my life and honestly, I didn’t know they could be that good! The charred carrots were also super super fantastic. Highly recommend both of those.
We ordered the bread service (the honey butter is 10/10), the Conchiglie (dungeness crab pasta), the Campanelle, and the Prime NY Steak. All were delicious, can’t wait to dine again soon!
The Food:
It’s legit good.
Quick story. I was blessed enough to have regular access to Il Corvo when it existed downtown. Every bowl of pasta they served was perfect every time, and it was $12, so I’m forever spoiled and seeking pasta of that quality (if not price).
All that said, I was impressed with with Haerfest’s pasta. Good sized portion, well balanced and cooked, with great taste.
We had the carrots and steak tartare for apps, and both were good if not quite great, and I really wanted the tartare to be 6oz not 4oz (or that proportional increase)
The Drinks:
I don’t drink all that much, and tend to be picky about mixed drinks if I’m paying Seattle prices for them, so I was surprised to find I would come back here for their Condesa. The bar tender was also very friendly and genuinely interested in us enjoying the drinks. I absolutely feel they’d fix your drink if you didn’t like it, and be able to help you find something you do.
The Space:
It’s a little cramped, but still has the fancy aesthetics and vibes you want without feeling too formal or pretentious. You’ll feel like good things are going to come out of the kitchen and you’ll be right.
Service:
We had one request that got missed, but they fixed it and then some, and that to me says this is a place worth returning to. If you’re gonna drop this kind of money you expect they’ll be attentive and make the experience feel special, and they do.
Constructive Criticisms:
Presentation was lackluster. Everything was served on the same plate – regardless of size, shape, or color – and tho that’s undoubtedly easier for the staff, it’s a missed opportunity to further elevate a lot of great dishes.
A dish like the carrots with pine nuts is a bit of work to get all the ingredients into a single bite, which a little unfortunate because it has good flavor.
