We got to go orders, and the service was so great! Didn’t take long for the food, either. We both got birria ramen and we shared an order of the soy garlic gyoza.
To start, the birria ramen was great! Please only get if you like spicy food, though. Our only complaint was the noodles… they were sticky and came in a container outside of the brother and wouldn’t fall apart in the broth. 6/10.
The soy garlic gyoza was hands down the best gyoza I have ever had. Perfectly crispy, sweet, and savory. Packed with flavor! 10/10.
Parking is hard to find to visit this wonderful place, but if you can find a spot, you won’t be disappointed with the service, atmosphere, or food. I would definitely recommend Kawa to all.

Please note: my ramen photos shown don’t have all the broth in the bowl yet – it comes with a good amount 🙂

My husband and I LOVE this place! We frequent this place twice a month at least. We are transplants from Chicago and have been trying to find a great sushi places. All the sushi we’ve gotten here has been amazing! Very fresh and well prepared! The wait staff and hostesses are always lovely.
The atmosphere is sophisticated and friendly. Plenty of seating and usually no wait. I would say this place has the best sushi in Grand Rapids!

I had been eager to try this place and I’m so glad that I did. The food presentation down to the quality and taste of the food was spot on. The soy garlic dumplings were nice and lightly toasty with crisp edges and every bite melts in your mouth. The menu prices are reasonable and fair. The menu has a variety of dishes, I can’t wait to try them all! The service was friendly and efficient as well so that’s always a nice bonus.

We loved every item we ordered. We are vegetarian and there are plenty of options in the menu. We ordered 2 appetizers, one sushi and one rice dish followed by a second order of the sushi rolls so good. And then dessert. We left happy and satiated but not stuffed. Portion sizes were perfect.

The sushi rolls and bulgogi were their best items but even that’s not enough to make up for the awful service and food issues. I had a mildew tasting cocktail so I let our waitress know my drink tasted spoiled- they use a Moscow mule mixture on tap and either the cup itself had mildew in it or the lines need to be cleaned. She told me that the ginger beer used is very strong and maybe that was the issue. I love ginger beer and Moscow mules so I know the flavor profile very well. I told her that was not what was wrong and it was more of a rotten taste. I just asked for an alternative and figured it was an unfortunate mishap. But the service only got worse.
We also ordered a miso salmon, my family member took a bite and couldn’t stomach it since it tasted bland and was burned/ overcooked (not just crispy skin)- when we let our waitress know the flavor was off she insisted that we didnt know what Miso salmon is supposed to taste like when we said it was ok we didnt want to reorder anything and can she please take it from the table, her response was “well I cant remove it from your bill”. Which wasn’t even what we asked for and it sounded condescending, she never apologized for the issues that happened.
Our waitress only spoke to my side of the table for the majority of the night and ignored my parents so we had to ask her to talk to them directly- it was very strange. There are better spots for sushi. Personally, I wont return.

Most exceptional cuts of nigiri sushi and puts itself far out of other local sushi places in town. Well worth the money spent. Especially if you consider yourself a real “foodie”. Real actual wasabi, not the fake stuff like everywhere else so it’s a real treat.

Only thing to dock down is the horrible millennial music they play. Once it’s been good but it’s enough to drive me out of here and feel uncomfortable. Bad songs other than that pleasant environment. Please change we are more grown up than this headache music and deserve better

This place legitimately has the best FRESH sushi in town. Definitely bang for your buck with options getting hand rolls or your regular sushi. Miso soup legit as well. The also offer imported Japanese sushi which is such a great option to have. Tori is phenomenal as well! Such a bright souls and very helpful!!! I absolutely love this place and come every week. Just GO!

We stopped here on a rainy and cold evening and opted for some of their mains instead of sushi, and it was a great change of pace. The steak bibimbap in a stone bowl was fresh and delicious, with kimchi that had just the right spice level. The birria ramen bowl was spicy and satisfying, with a great balance between noodles, egg, and pork. Definitely worth stopping in again.

I ordered sushi here, but unfortunately the chef clearly didn’t know how to prepare it properly. The rice was overcooked and soggy, and the sushi completely fell apart as soon as I picked it up. Very disappointing experience — I expected fresh, well-made sushi, but this was far from it.
