Someone stole my jacket and instead of the establishment being considerate and attentive, they instead interrogated me about using the “wrong gendered” bathroom. It’s 2022, but okay. Keep living three decades’ behind. It’s fine. I was a weekly customer but I will strongly reconsider whether they are worth patronizing after this encounter when their prices are higher than the alternatives anyway. Editing review to say the bartender who got in my face DID apologize a few minutes later, which is appreciated but I’m still appalled at what happened.

Normally a great place to get a drink, have a smoke and relax, but beware of the bartenders. They seem to have no idea what they are doing usually and will charge different people different prices, we have been refused drinks when we tried to order 8 shots for a group, and they wouldn’t serve us pitchers another time because “they don’t do pitchers anymore” even though another group had pitchers. Good old Hess, it’s been a staple of Bloomsburg, PA since 1889, making it, to my knowledge, the oldest bar in town. It looks like the quintessential old timey tavern. Upstairs, there is a long U-shaped bar in the front, with booths, tables, and pool tables in the back. On weekends, go downstairs to check out the basement bar, The Painted Pony Saloon. The drinks are pretty cheap, so you can make a night of it without plunging yourself into destitution. You can’t beat it. Fair warning: Hess is, always has been, and likely always will be a smoking bar. If you are very sensitive to cigarette smoke, beware. Of course, this also means you can light up whenever you want if you smoke. So this could be a potential positive or negative depending on your perspective. All in all, if you’re going to the bar in Bloomsburg, you’d be making a mistake not to visit this place.

The place is almost always open. The pool tables are pretty decent. The prices are decent. You can smoke inside which is good for smokers, but bad for leaving smelling like smoke.

It is what it is. It’s Hess’s. I’ve been going to this place whenever I was living back home since I’ve been old enough to drink. Bartenders are all great especially if you know them. My only complaint is that it’s smokey. I’m not a smoker but whenever I’m there I end up lighting up just because I feel like I’m breathing it anyway so I might as well.

Same great place it always has been. Maybe do special events like mechanical bull night and special DJs e.t.c get extractor fans so smoke isn’t as annoying to non-smokers, thanks.
