After the great experience we had at Urban Grounds, my husband and I were excited to try the sister location, Refined Roots, for dinner. However, our experience was less than ideal.

To start, the interior design is excellent – soft leather seating in the dining room, warm lighting, large windows at the front, and a mix of brown wood, black metal, and green accents throughout the space.

After being seated quickly, we spent some time looking over the food and beverage menus. My husband ordered a seasonal mocktail, which was lovely. I was torn between a glass of Clean Slate Riesling and a mocktail. Since there was an extensive wine menu, I asked our waitress for information on the notes/flavor profile of the riesling (“Is it citrus-forward? What information could you give me?”). Our wait staff team (an experienced waitress with a newer waitress shadowing) was unsure and explained that they would go check. I was more than fine with them double-checking, as I trusted the serving team to steer me correctly. I was eventually informed that the riesling was not really citrus forward and was a sweet white wine. With that information, I decided to order a mocktail (Scarlet Fiz) and enjoyed that beverage. After ordering my mocktail, I did a quick Google search of the riesling out of curiosity. In less than 30 second of reading the website for Clean Slate Riesling, I found out the wine has “refreshing citrus and peach flavors balanced by a touch of honey and vibrant acidity.” The front page of the website highlights the citrus flavor on 3 separate occasions. Cue the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” end credits music.

We ordered the Truffle Parm Fries as a starter, which were warm and crispy. For our main courses, my husband order the Bird on Fire with fries. He liked this meal. I ordered the Grown Up Grilled Cheese with no bacon jam (to make the meal vegetarian) and tomato soup. The grilled cheese appeared to have a brown jam on it with square brown chunks, and I was concerned that I was given bacon jam. My husband tasted the jam and agreed that it tasted like bacon. When we asked our serving team, the experienced waitress let me know (somewhat snappily) that it was actually onion jam. The Google menu, which says “Updated 4 days ago” does not indicate an onion jam, but rather balsamic onions. If she misspoke, I completely understand. However, considering the riesling conversation, I found it difficult to complete my meal. To complete our meal, we ordered oat milk lattes to-go and left after paying.

The server-in-training did an excellent job throughout her time with us – She spent time clearing the table, greeting us/smiling as she passed by, and checking-in cheerfully. When I asked about the wine, she offered to check her training notes about the menu, which I appreciated. I hope she is able to spend time with a variety of servers in her training, as I am unsure the person she shadowed with this evening is the best person to mentor future servers.

Lastly, to note, my husband was in charge of the bill and tipped what he felt was appropriate based on the service we received from the experienced server. If anyone from the Refined Roots management team reads this: We would be more than happy to provide a separate tip for the server-in-training. She did a fantastic job and truly deserves a larger tip for her hard work and commitment to excellent service.

My significant other and I visited Refined Roots in Tarpon Springs for lunch, and unfortunately, we left unimpressed. I ordered the “Bird on Fire” chicken sandwich, which was a major letdown. The Sriracha aioli was so faint I forgot it was supposed to be a spicy sandwich. The chicken itself was over-fried to the point of being mostly breading, with barely any actual chicken meat. Also I asked for no onions on my sandwich, but it arrived with onions anyway. The waitress was kind enough to take it back, but the kitchen only removed the onions, leaving the lingering onion taste on the lettuce and tomato without replacing them. My partner got “The Brad” burger, and it was equally underwhelming—nothing special at all.
On the positive side, the aesthetic of the restaurant is very cute, and the chairs were comfy. The fries were a highlight—crispy and flavorful, especially with the peppery ketchup, which was a nice touch.
Service was just okay. The staff wasn’t rude but didn’t go out of their way to be friendly or make the experience personal.
Overall, I probably won’t return. There are other restaurants in Tarpon Springs that feel more worth our time and money.

Very nice dinner. We walked in for an early dinner and seated quickly. Cute place with great food. The chicken wings for appetizer, tiramisu for dessert, and grilled cheese with tomato soup as an entree were all excellent. However, the tiramisu was very small for the price, $10 for a tiny piece. Strange, since the portions of all the other dishes we had were commensurate of the price. The salmon entree was good but overcooked and lacked seasoning. The mocktails were great. Overall, we’re excited to return to try other dishes. Great quality ingredients and creative menu without pretension or being too weird to taste good. Service was also nice. Would recommend to a friend.

A very pleasant and unique place to have a bite in downtown Tarpon Springs. We had a bowl and lettuce wraps and both were fresh & delicious. Friendly service and comfortable atmosphere.

Uodate: No response in weeks = very poor customer service

I’ve been here twice now and both times I’ve had terrible service. The last time I went (Sept) I actually got up left after waiting over 15 minutes for a server to stop by to take my order. My first time there I had a similar experience. I did enjoy the food the first time I was there but I do think the portions are very small (chicken sandwich) for what they are charging.

This dessert was amazing.

I also really resent One Restaurant doesn’t allow you to sit where you’ve requested. I got stuck in a spot I didn’t want to be in in a chair I didn’t want to sit in because it was incredibly uncomfortable.

So delicious! I came here for brunch and was not disappointed. The dad bod bowl had so much meat and was only priced at $15. Bottomless mimosas were $15 with different juice options.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant and the service was top shelf. Highly recommend the seasonal offerings: The pictured halibut entree was a winner. Everything we ordered was delicious and we can’t wait to return!

Refined Roots is a really cute spot with a great atmosphere. Our party of five had comfortable seating for dinner, and the cocktails were excellent—especially the Let Me Forget and Unplanned Adventure, which ended up being favorites. We started with the wings and Brussels sprouts, both very yummy. Three of us ordered the Lemon Dijon Chicken, and it was delightful with a perfect crust and great seasoning. The filet also got good reviews at our table, and the beet salad was a hit. The only food miss was the tomato soup, which was pretty bland. Desserts tasted great but were definitely on the small side for the price.

The reason for the 4 stars is the service. We weren’t in a rush and were hoping for a relaxed dinner, but everything took an excessive amount of time—even by leisurely dining standards. Apps took over 20 minutes to come out, and drinks consistently took at least 10 minutes to reach the table. Since our table faced the bar, it was confusing to see such delays, especially early in the evening when only two tables were seated. Our server wasn’t very attentive, and when there was an issue with the accuracy of an order, she didn’t seem interested in addressing it.

That said, the food and drinks were genuinely very good, and the vibe is great. I’ll likely give it another try—hopefully the service was just an off night for our waitress.

This restaurant was ok. My husband really liked his Grown Up Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. The grilled cheese was very crispy and very cheesy served with a delicious bacon jam. The soup was thick with a good rich flavor, almost pureed. I had a turkey burger which had a nice flavor, but I did not like the pesto. The sweet potato fries were very good, crispy, salted just right, and flavorful. It was expensive for what we got.

We shared a Manhattan cocktail which was good.

What I didn’t like is that I had a hard time finding non-dairy items. They put butter, cheese and dairy in many items. But I guess that goes for meant restaurants these days.

The atmosphere was just ok. You had to walk through the back of the restaurant and hallways to get to their outdoor patio. The inside seemed a bit sterile, not cozy. The patio was fine.

The service was good.

I would not seek out this restaurant again (although my husband might, haha).
