The other day I tried, Mama G African Restaurant, for lunch. I tried their Jollof Rice w/ Chicken. I was in a stretch of NEEDING Jollof Rice after I had tried it for the first time lol. Not too long after my first experience trying Jollof Rice, along with trying different places in different areas, I had rode past this place and decided to try it out. I am not sure if it was just the time or day that I came, but I was completely disappointed. The Jollof rice was more oily than you’d probably get at most places and the flavor was extremely lacking. Not to mention the rice tasted old, and/or reheated from the day before. The chicken was a bit cold and tough, but the flavor was fairly decent. The most disappointing experience was the price. I paid over $20 for the one plate, and at the time based off of my fairly limited previous experiences, I was like “Ok, this one has to be the best at this price!”. Again I’m not sure if it was the time of day (a later lunch time ~1pm), or the day I went (a Wednesday), but the experience was just not it. I would love to try this place again, but consistency along with quality is what makes a restaurant one you’d love to go back to again and again. Maybe if I am in the area again, I’d try it. But from my only experience it was pretty disappointing. Especially given the quality of the Jollof I was experiencing beforehand (I had it about 6 times before this one). If you’re in the Newark area feel free to check this place out.

I was feeling hungry and my hotel doesn’t have a restaurant so I went into the Uber eats app to find something to eat. Mama G restaurant was one of the highly rated African food. I ordered pounded yam with egusi soup. It was so delicious, I had no problem with the portion but it is one piece of meat and one chicken thigh. The spice level is hot but I already knew that’s how egusi soup is. Thanks for the wonderful meal.

Food arrived well packaged, it looked good, tasted good until i went to bite into the meat and found hair, i grabbed the other piece of meat and found hair too, the other piece of (cow skin i believe) meat was coiled so the hair was inside of it. Pics included. This review is not meant to deter people from buying here but please let the chef know to cover their hair, head when preparing or cooking the meal. Threw away rest of the food. I ordered peppered meat too but havent come across hair yet. Otherwise fufu was delicious.

Customer service very rude. I bought 2meatpie, a fish roll n a drink the lady refused to give me a bag and said the stuff I bought was too small to give me a bag. Prior to that her attitude was very rude for no reason like how do you work in a restaurant u don’t greet ur customers and when ask for price you respond back rudely like the customer is the cause of your problem. The food taste isn’t worth the poor customer service. Meatpie and fish roll not fresh and super hard and cold.

Im sure the owner remembers me. (She remembers me as (Dre) the Amazon guy ) When you first walk in it might seem as if she has an attitude but she’s actually pretty nice when you talk to her and she even jokes around. I Discovered this place while doing doordash. Decided to come back again and try the Egusi and pounded yams as suggested by my best friend who is Yoruba. I got the assorted meats and everything was super spicy just like i liked it. I even had meat pie on the side. I’ll just remember to specify skipping the Pomo as I cant seem to like it, but the catfish, tilapia and goat buss I will def be coming back again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I ordered from here through Grubhub and it was NOT worth the price. As many others have mentioned, they’re very stingy with the portions. For 20$ worth of egusi soup I received 1 chicken drumstick, 1 small piece of beef, and an inedible fat/cartilage cap that I’m assuming was supposed to be the goat meat I ordered. At that, all of the meat was severely over cooked and dry. The flavor of the soup was pretty good and had a decent spice to it (I personally prefer it hotter though). The cassava fufu was smooth and supple, reminding me of the texture of mashed potatoes. The Nigerian meat pie I ordered came ice cold. Literally ICE COLD. It was like it had just come out the freezer/fridge as it was still even in a ziplock bag.

If you’re looking for a good meal, at a reasonable price – I don’t think this is the place. I think you could get more bang for your buck and better food elsewhere.

I’m very disappointed, the food was way too expensive for this portion size. And the meat tasted old and not fresh too. Do your self a favor and find somewhere else to eat.

Update: Sept 23

In response to the owner, yes I ordered online but are you saying you gave me worse quality of food because I did not come into your restaurant to eat?

Thank you for feeding me good Nigerian food I tried it the first day and just couldn’t stop ordering afterwards. If I am ever in NJ I’ll be sure to come by. Try the Native Jollof rice and thank me later.

I am giving Mama G a four star and honestly as a picky eater that’s saying a lot. The reason I’m giving them a four star is because I wish they had more variety especially when it comes to the drinks and it would be nice to have images accompany the food they are selling.

But overall, I would say they have it down when it comes to autheric Nigerian food. Their Eguisi with cassava fufu is amazing. Level of spice and everything is on point and I know when my boo gets here he’ll be able to continue his home away from home cuisines.

I’m a jamaican who loves African food dearly. I love the culture and food as a whole. A friend of mine recently switched jobs so I can no longer get the authenticity any more of the food. But i heard of this place from a friend and decided to try because i was craving saki with egusi and pounded yam. Food was absolutely amazing, just the right amount of spice in my book and the meat was very tender which i loved. You can tell they cleaned the meat very well as it had no smell to it. I can’t even express my enjoyment for the food. My only disappointment is that I ordered the saki, beef, and chicken and instead of getting the saki i got two pieces of meat. But other than that i had a good experience with this place. Also keep in mind i ordered this food from uber eats and the food took 40-50 minutes to get to me and the food was still amazing warm and hot. That’s a plus for me
