The friendly group at Bistro Montage that Chef Kelly has assembled have prepared me some of the most exciting and contrastive dishes I know. I am always looking forward to what’s new on the menu. The dishes just pop off the plate visually! My favorite part, though, is the bar with the great spirits and unique drinks made with them. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys the better things in life and have time to enjoy it. Always look forward to a visit to the bistro!!!

One of the best in the city. My wife and I love this place — wonderful food, solid personal service and charming atmosphere. The cocktails are also some of the best in the city — we love sitting at the bar! I don’t feel like I’m in DSM when I’m there. Must try for sure

Well over priced for what was received. Had to ask 3 times for a cocktail from the bar, waiter tried up-selling us items we did not want, and the dishes we had, although good, could easily be constructed by any reasonably accomplished home cook. Overall rather unimpressive for the money spent. Dinner and wine for 2 over $160. Save your money and go to Des Moines icons such as Christopher’s or Sam and Gabe’s, much better value for your money.

What a disappointment. The food was fine, but the service was awful. Not a smile from any of the staff the entire dinner. When we entered, the hostess and two of the wait staff were chatting and basically ignored us. No hello. No smile. We had to interrupt them to get seated. We then waited for a full 10 minutes before any of the wait staff bothered to say anything, bring us water, etc.

Our server (Mark) ignored us most of the evening, unless I physically raised my hand to get his attention. He was borderline rude, rushed us through ordering, and didn’t explain any of the dishes or specials unless we asked. Not once did he ask us how our meal was.

I don’t blame the staff for this…as the management has clearly not trained their personnel on how to treat customers. There are plenty of other options at this price point and food quality in Des Moines. I recommend going elsewhere.

Last night we enjoyed Bistro Montage for the 2nd time in a year. And just like before, we were wonderfully impressed.

The service, food and atmosphere all fit together perfectly as a well-done puzzle. The overall experience was relaxing and so very enjoyable!

My wife had the lobster with black pasta which made for a striking and delicious entree. I’m so used to seeing overly laden bowls of pasta with a few tiny chunks of lobster that you MAY find while eating it. No such problem here! The entire combination of sauce, lobster and pasta was perfectly proportioned so it was satisfying but not carb-heavy with cheap pasta like you may find at other places.

The steak frites was magnificent! The steak was cooked perfectly with an incredible butter on top which complimented the steak. On it’s own the juiciness of the steak and seasoning was well enough but the edition of the butter really just added a wonderful herbed depth to the meat in general. My only regret was I needed more of the homemade ketchup for the fries 🙂

If I could pick one highlight of them all it would be the Gateau Marjolaine. Instead of the “typical, soggy” tiramisu that other Italian places feature, the crispness of the almond dacquiose provided a meaningful change in enjoyment! And just when I thought the dark chocolate or french buttercream would be overpoweringly sweet at the end, I instead enjoyed a well-balanced finish of sweetness that convinced me I could easily eat another!

In all, a perfect relaxing dining experience. You can go here for any small gathering and just “let your defenses down”. You know they will always do everything so well you may never really know how enjoyable your night was until after you leave.

Go if you can. You will enjoy for a long time afterwards. Highly recommended by this DM foodie!
