Tucked away in the middle of Morganton, North Carolina, right in the middle of downtown, is Pat’s Snack Bar — a local spot that’s been around for nearly 50 years.
It’s a small, no-frills restaurant with a very simple menu. Cash only, sit-down seating, plus a small bar area. Everything is cooked right there on the flat top in front of you, which adds to the experience. Burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, and liver mush (definitely an acquired taste — proceed with caution on that one).
Overall, it was a great experience. The staff was super friendly, the food was solid, and it’s the kind of place you’d gladly stop at again. Also they have excellent desserts served in the back of the restaurant. The lady preparing these sweet treats has been at Pat’s since 2001.
Just note the limited hours — open Monday through Wednesday from 11 AM to 2 PM — but if you catch it when it’s open, it’s well worth the stop.

Well stocked with local color and their precious and priceless persiflage, Pat’s Snack Bar offers a pretty tasty lunch served up by an outstanding staff. I don’t know when I have been in a restaurant with a more friendly, hard working, cheerful staff. They appear to truly enjoy the opportunity to serve their customers. The burger tasted good, though the patty could have been a tick bigger. The hot dog all the way was good as well but could have used a bit more chili. Crinkle fries were cooked just right. In the back is a large selection of homemade goodies that looked delicious.
The “plate” was a piece of wax paper, and only about a third of the lights were turned on. I wonder if Pat’s is on some kind of mission to save the environment…
The dim lighting made it difficult to see the nostalgic artifacts adorning the walls and shelves.
Honestly, the food was probably just shy of 3.5 stars. But this is one of those cases where the exceptional service and excellent price make a big difference. So Pat’s a solid 4 stars for me.

Best place to get a good hamburger! I wish they stayed open longer. But other than that their burgers CANNOT be beat, not even the fries! Also the lady in the back has some tasty treats! Italian Cream Cheese Cake is my favorite! All this for very reasonable prices.

Homey, cozy, small town feel. Service was top notch, felt right at home here. Cash only is a downside but being in downtown lots of atms near by. The hotdogs Carolina style was amazing! Very affordable option for a quick lunch!

Pat’s is like coming home. You want someplace where you get solid comfort food, surrounded by history, both personal and local, a place run by good people that welcome you if they’ve seen you 3 or 300 times … well … you are going to want to discover Pat’s. If you’re smart – and have a sweet tooth and appreciation for excellent baked goodies – make sure you get your desserts first before they get bought out. ❤️

Hot dogs are really good as well. But you cannot forget to go see Lila in the back she makes the best red velvet cake and other desserts in town.
