The tiramisu and cannolis are great as well. Both taste fresh and homemade.
The interior of the restaurant seems to be a little dated but hopefully in time this will change. I am excited to say this is a great, refreshing change to the restaurant selection in Shelbyville. You will not be disappointed! Best Italian food in the area.
EDIT: I ordered the chicken piccata today and the flavors were great and balanced, however I am disappointed with the portion size. The menu is a little misleading, as I expected a chicken dish with a side of pasta, however it more so seemed like a pasta dish with a side of chicken. I received one piece of chicken, about half the size of my fist, and the rest was pasta (picture attached). Also, the chicken wasn’t traditional piccata style (was not dredged in flour and sautéed). A little disappointed but the flavors were great. This will not prevent me from going back, I’ll just have something different next time.
Made the trek to Shelbyville to try out LaMattina Ristorante Italiano based on some recommendations I read. First bit of advice…there is no pizza or “non-pasta” dishes on this menu. If you have a member of your group who is not a pasta fan (as we did), they will be out of luck here and relegated to side items and salads. This was a former Mexican restaurant as indicated by the décor and murals throughout the place, may want to change the décor for more of an Italian feel. Our server was Sandra and she took excellent care of us, as did the other ladies who assisted her in delivering our food and quietly dumping ice while the littlest one was sleeping.
Appetizers: I ordered the Caprese which consisted of fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, basil, and a balsamic reduction. Overall the dish was good but for me the wrong type of tomato was used…standard garden tomato versus Roma or San Marzano style tomato’s. IMHO it does make a difference but the balsamic reduction was on point and saved the dish overall. An order of Garlic Knots were really soft twist rolls covered in a minced garlic, butter, and olive oil glaze. Good yes…and very heavy on the garlic! Also ordered a side of meatballs in Pomodoro sauce…they were a bit disappointing. The sauce was good but the meatball flavor was bland and the texture indicated there was too much breadcrumbs in the mix. Same held true when meatballs were served with the dishes below.
Meals are served with homemade garlic bread, but sadly this was some of the toughest bread I have ever tried to eat. Not dried out tough, overall the texture of the bread was tough. This is the first time there was bread leftover in the basket at the end of a meal…very unusual especially with my daughter and grandchildren in attendance.
Stuffed Shells: These were jumbo pasta shells stuffed with ricotta & parmesan, topped with pomodoro sauce & mozzarella then baked…overall a solid dish according to my daughter.
Fettuccine & Pomodoro Sauce with meatballs and sausage: The sauce here is a slightly sweet Italian gravy, thick, with a good tomato flavor. There’s not any real spice nor heat in this sauce, but overall it is a good basic sauce that will appeal to most everyone. Important to note and something I look for…the pasta was well drained and there was not a puddle of pasta water in the bottom of the dish. One of my “pet peeves” when it comes to Italian restaurants. Not sure why but the sausage was served in little slices, like pepperoni on a pizza but a little thicker. They were OK but lacked any real Italian spice to them…just basic sausages. The meatballs were disappointing, the flavor bland, and the texture indicated there was too much breadcrumbs in the mix.
Children’s meals: Nice size for smaller children, basic pasta and meatballs with options for different sauces. The Alfredo sauce was good and very thick…really stuck to the pasta.
The food wasn’t extraordinary, but good nonetheless. Pricing was slightly high for the quality of food we received, but was still affordable. The service was great! Overall, we will probably return.
The staff were friendly and service was excellent! I had eggplant parmesan, so crispy, a great balance of pasta, and oh, that sauce.
I highly recommend the specials for affordability and flavor, however pricing is reasonable for all menu items.
Our group all reported a favorable dining experience…we were able to have wonderful conversation in a delightfully cozy atmosphere. The decor felt very bistro.
The tableside visit from the executive chef and owner was a pleasant surprise and made us feel very special.
And you have to try the tiramisu!
We will be back, and look forward to a wine selection the new year.
In response to the owner I have had real Alfredo and make it quite often. I have had the experience of eating REAL ALFREDO FROM ITALY so before you start insulting people just take open reviews okay. Its not for you its for people like me that go to restaurants and don’t want to waste money on food (expensive food at that) that they might not like everyone is initiated to there own opinion. Again no one at my table 6 people were not happy with the food which by the way is not related to me. I would never go back even if I got paid too. Maybe I would try pizza if i truly had too you can’t mess that up too bad… I think I could be surprised.
