The short rib entrée was hands down the best we’ve ever had. Cooked to perfection, incredibly tender, and packed with flavor. It was served with crispy Brussels sprouts that were dynamite—somehow a totally unique take and, once again, among the best we’ve ever had. The sweet plantains were also cooked perfectly.
Truly blown away. Every bite was memorable. Add in a great ambiance and friendly staff, and this was an unforgettable meal—one I’ll definitely be dreaming about.
Our server Gabrielle while nice, was not super attentive. He initially came by and took drink orders and our app order but then waiting 20 minutes, and after our appetizer was done to take food orders. When we got our food, he never checked on us as we ate our meal, and never gave an explanation as to why we waited over 30 minutes to get our drinks. If the restaurant was busy I would have understood but this was not the case.
We ordered two mocktails:
Mamasit 3.5/5. It was fruity and I enjoyed it.
Mango Menta 5/5 very refreshing. The mint was a great addition to an otherwise fruit forward drink.
Appetizer: chef empanadas: 4/5 the crust was really nice and the chicken inside was flavorful. I enjoyed both the habanero aioli it was served with, and the pickled red onions. It needed the tang and crunch. I did expect more spice from the aioli. It was less than mild on that end.
Dinner:
Sticky Braised Ribs: 0/5. had our severed checked on I would have sent these back. Before I get to the ribs I want to say the jicama slaw was really nice, and the Brussel sprouts were also good but they were served cold which made them less enjoyable. I ordered a side of garlic mash and those were just basic. Not enough fat in them at all. No creaminess, and I got them 15/20 minutes after I was served my food.
The ribs tasted boiled not braised, and were swimming what I imagine was meant to be a teriyaki sauce. The flavor of this sauce was very lacking, congealed from far too much cornstarch and was not sticky at all. It was good portion size but could finish anything but one rib due to both taste and texture. I would not recommend this dish.
We also ordered the fish tacos those were 4/5. Good flavor and a nice fry on the fish. The slaw was again really good. I would recommend these.
In the end our tab was $117 and for me I did not get what I paid for at all. I don’t know if I would be back.
I have been multiple times and I should have done this review a long time ago! But Baru has officially become my favorite restaurant in Detroit. The menu is incredible—every dish is thoughtfully crafted, beautifully presented, and packed with flavor. You can tell the kitchen puts real care into what they do. The chef even came to visit our table and talk with us for a bit too!
The cocktails were unforgettable, especially the Cloudy with a Chance of Margarita . Hands down some of the best I’ve ever had—fresh, perfectly balanced, and dangerously easy to sip. The entire drink menu complements the food perfectly, making both brunch and dinner here feel like an experience rather than just a meal.
On top of all that, the atmosphere and service were outstanding. If you’re looking for a top-tier brunch in the city, Baru is a must-try. I’ll definitely be back!
The atmosphere is very nice.
I had the oxtails too—they were fine, a bit fatty, but that’s expected. The plantains were absolutely delicious though. I just wish the ribeye matched the quality of everything else, especially with that price tag.
Also, heads up: if you’re not paying attention on the way out, you’ll end up walking straight through the kitchen.
Overall: cool spot, great ambiance, strong apps and drinks… but the entrées were disappointing.
