Reviews
Ambiance: 5/5
Food: 3.5/5 (generous portions; based on the lunch menu)
Upon entering, one word immediately comes to mind to describe the ambiance: opulent. The moment you walk through the doors, you’re greeted by a striking golden figure—believed to be Kinnari—guarding the entrance to this lavish restaurant. The walls are adorned with beautifully painted murals, and ornate Khon masks decorate one of the back walls. It’s also hard to miss the exceptional hanging greenery overhead, creating an enchanted, serene forest-like atmosphere.
Although the restaurant was crowded by noon, we were seated quickly. After a brief overview of the menu, we opted for the lunch selections. Unfortunately, while seating was prompt, waiting for the waitress to return and take our order was not. I’m chalking this up to the restaurant being busy at the time. Once our order was placed, we were served water; however, I recommend ordering a beverage, as the water tasted heavily chlorinated.
Here’s what we ordered:
Appetizers:
~Phirom Dumplings – 3/5 stars
Two steamed dumplings that were slightly overcooked. The filling consisted of ground chicken and shrimp mashed into a paste, encased in dumpling skin. I believe this is their rendition of Kanom Jeeb, which traditionally uses ground pork with shrimp and vegetables wrapped in a thin dumpling skin. These were served with soy sauce, which added to the saltiness.
~Golden Fritters – 2/5 stars
Two fried dumplings that were unfortunately very dry—essentially the fried version of the Phirom Dumplings. These also came with a soy-based dipping sauce, though this one had a slight sweetness.
Entrées:
~Drunken Noodle – 4/5 stars
A very good balance of savory and umami flavors, though a bit too bold due to heavy-handed sauces. The dish included plenty of mushrooms, string beans, and bell peppers, which I appreciated. The tofu, our chosen protein, was slightly overdone—the exterior was rubbery, and the interior had lost much of its moisture. My guess is that it was pre-cooked and reheated when ordered, which accounts for the deduction of one star.
~Basil Fried Rice – 2/5 stars
A classic and popular Thai dish, but sadly far too salty. It was difficult to eat, so thankfully my husband shared his Drunken Noodle with me. We plan to take the leftovers home and add additional jasmine rice to help balance the saltiness. This was particularly disappointing, as fried rice is a staple of Thai cuisine. I couldn’t smell the aroma of jasmine rice, nor taste the sweetness and savoriness typically imparted by basil. What was especially odd was the texture: the rice was hard. I suspect it needed a longer cooking time to properly absorb the water.
Both entrées were served in generous portions. The service was polite, though no one checked in on us or inquired when a plate was left nearly untouched. The tables are also quite close together, something I noticed when guests were seated nearby or when servers delivered food.
Overall, it’s a very impressive venue, ideal for a date or a relaxed gathering with friends when you want to escape for a bit.
Despite the meal not being perfect, I would return to try it again, preferably during a less crowded time. Parking is plentiful, located within a shared strip mall lot.
$75 for all of these, which is reasonable to me. It’s in the mall so plenty of parking space.
