Ninniku Ramen Izakaya – Review – Japantown – San Francisco

Ninniku Ramen Izakaya is a Japantown spot with eight types of ramen and other small plates like chicken karaage, spicy tuna rolls, and takoyaki.

Ninniku is a great place to grab some authentic Japanese food while in Japantown. They have many choices, mostly consisting of ramen or sushi. My friend and I went while we were out exploring downtown, we both got the “three course lunch special” which includes an appetizer, main course, and dessert. All combinations of this are $16- an amazing price for San Francisco! (Everything on the menu is about $10-$16) My friend got the takoyaki and beef ramen. I had the spicy tuna roll for my appetizer and salmon poke don bowl for my main course. We both got a strawberry matcha dessert. Everything was very flavorful, fresh, and filling. I love the location of this place, very close to the mall in Japantown. The only downside is they don’t seem to have a lot of seating available, it is somewhat crammed. The service was very quick after we got seated. Overall, highly recommend this restaurant if you are out strolling through Japantown.

This is my go-to place when I am around Japantown/Fillmore area!

We really enjoy getting their happy hour menu deals as well as their ramen. The Chashu Cha Han (BBQ Pork Fried Rice) was delicious and definitely our favorite. The soft boiled egg on top was a delightful addition to the flavorful fried pork fried rice along with the perfect crunchiness from the pork katsu we ordered. The poke salmon was fresh and the sushi (spicy salmon and tuna) were all delicious!

The other star of the show was the ramen which has the curry sauce on top with the katsu and the broth was nice and spicy. Combining the sauce and broth together just enhanced the flavor of the ramen.

Will definitely come back for their lunch special!

Really cute place we went to for a casual dinner on a Saturday night!

Good:
– We got seated immediately
– The food was so tasty and good value and the value was great
– The mazemen is so savory and I like the way all the flavors come together – it’s nice to have so many different textures together
– The place is super cute! Super cozy and homey
– The ramen bowl is huge, I like the flavor of the soup

Bad:
– The servers are really busy and it’s a bit hard to flag them down

Overall this was a nice place to go and a cozy meal.

Not terrible nor praiseworthy, worth trying going during the happy hour. That’s the best part of this place, along with the nice atmosphere. The spicy miso yuzu ramen I got wasn’t offensive, but the spring mix lettuce was an odd garnish and the broth was extremely oily. The matcha cheesecake was fine, and the coconut shoyu chicken ramen was fine. Overall underwhelming, but again, the food isn’t bad, and they might have better options than the ramen

This small, cozy restaurant served us well. We ordered chicken karagee, spicy miso chashu ramen, takoyaki, and tonkotsu chashu ramen. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, with a wait time of approximately 30 minutes during the lunch rush. We were required to sign in for the waitlist and received a complimentary matcha panna cotta dessert. Be aware that parking can be challenging in the area, with no free parking options available. Overall, it was a great dining experience and we would definitely return.

I saw this place on TikTok and I was really excited about the $16 lunch. The atmosphere was lovely and our waiter Carlos was kind and very attentive. The place is quite small and during lunch it gets busy. We waited for a total of an hour before getting inside. When you get inside you just write your name on a piece of paper and they tell you to come back in a hour. That was very annoying because after waiting for a hr we were informed that there were still five parties ahead of us. One thing I was disappointed with was at the end of our bill which was a large group fee of 20%. We were not informed about this fee at all and were really shocked while seeing this at the end of our bill. Also we asked for extra spice in our ramen which we did not get and also was another $2.00 charge. The food was average and not worth the hype I was seeing online. Overall I would give this place a 2.5 ( rounded around to 3) stars. I would definitely not go again.

Ninniku has a pretty good lunch deal. For $16, you get an appetizer, and entree, and dessert. And in this economy, a three-course meal under $25 after tax/tip is pretty good.

Out of the lunch deal menu options, I ordered the takoyaki for my appetizer and a chicken kaarage curry plate for my entree. The takoyaki was pretty good. Crispy on the outside with a soft interior and a chewy octopus. The bonito flakes added the umami notes. And it was plenty for one person.

The chicken kaarage curry plate had a good kick! The lunch menu didn’t mention spice level, and I don’t recall reading it in the main menu as well. But as someone who loves Japanese curry, I should’ve expected it. I wish the spicy oil was on the side so I can determine the heat on my own. I also wish the ginger was on the side. The curry is on the thinner side, but still flavorful. But I prefer a thicker curry. The chicken was lightly breaded and juicy. I missed the usual sides of carrots and potatoes, but I appreciated the lighter veggies.

The dessert was a small matcha panna cotta with a strawberry. The panna cotta itself was smooth, but I found the strawberry syrup to by cloyingly sweet that it overpowered the delicate matcha flavor.

Service was fine. I will note that I didn’t get water right away. I know some restaurants prefer that the patron ask first so as to not waste a glass. But when other diners came in and were served with water right away, I knew that preference wasn’t the case and I had to ask. It’s a small restaurant but there was only one server so it took awhile to get assistance. But I would like to come back and try their ramen.

Came for their $16 lunch menu that comes with an appetizer, main, and little dessert (ended up paying around $21 with tax and tip).

I chose the California rolls for my appetizer and the spicy miso ramen for my main dish. California rolls were bigger than I thought and it was pretty good!

The ramen was alright- I’ve definitely had better ramen elsewhere and personally would have loved more spice but can’t complain for their price!

$5 happy hour! Salmon had a small lump of salsa, which was interesting but I didn’t hate it. The acidity cut through the mayo well. I liked how buttery the salmon was — it felt quite premium.

The fried rice on the other hand was rather odd. There was barely any chashu and the rice was not dry enough, so it tasted mushy. It was also a little spicy; overall not what I expected.

I’d say the happy hour price is worth it, but I probably wouldn’t pay full price for any items. Service was not great — one waitress was very curt and another waiter literally would not come to my table and he avoided eye contact. The person delivering rice had to literally tell the waitress I was looking for assistance.

Pretty good, but it was kind of hard to find parking so I ended up just taking the bus. The seating was also kind of limited so I had to wait a couple minutes when I arrived. Overall the food was pretty good. I felt like the ramen was a little bit too salty and the takayaki was pretty good and it was good value.
