Mahi’s Ethiopian Kitchen is a bright and artful little gem of a place that delighted our senses from the moment we smelled the incredible aromas of food luring us around the corner and into this neat alleyway cafe.
With smells that good we knew we were in for a real adventure, and Mahi’s cooking truly does amaze!
New to the Ethiopian food experience, and with so many vegetarian options on the menu, we decided to try the vegetarian sampler platters.
Choose your samples from a variety of dishes available that day, and Mahi will serve them up on a large platter of Teff bread, which is the perfect pallette for tearing into and sampling everything with. So much flavor and wonderful spices! Loved it!

The only Ethiopian restaurant in Columbia making it the best Ethiopian restaurant in Columbia. Seriously, the chef and owner, Mahi, truly cares to produce amazing Ethiopian food and she does remember you along with what you like to eat and how spicy. The food here is always delicious and the atmosphere is cozy and inviting. The inside of the restaurant is small with only about 6 – 7 tables. The service is always on point and most importantly the food is amazing, I’ve never been disappointed.

It was so exciting to go somewhere with so many vegetarian options! It was also my first time trying Ethiopian food and it was so delicious and nutritious. I got the vegetarian platter and got to try a sample of 5 of the vegetarian dishes. My taste buds were very happy.

I want to preface with the fact that I’ve never had Ethiopian cuisine before and Mahi’s has set a very high bar. This is an outstanding restaurant, with a myriad of options for everyone, and I cannot recommend it enough.
My group of five ordered two shareable sample platters and it was more than enough food. Each platter contains great portions with a delightful mix of options from the menu. Everything I tried was incredibly flavorful, with the Atakilt Wot (spiced cabbage and carrot) being the favorite amongst the group. I personally found the Dinich Alicha (stewed potatoes) to be my favorite, but highly recommend the sample platter if you visit, as the other dishes were phenomenal.
Overall, this place is a wonderful addition to Columbia’s diverse selection of restaurants and deserves praise for its flavorful dishes, inviting staff, and cozy atmosphere. A truly 5/5 dining experience!

The food is drop dead incredible and the proprietor is such a sweetheart. I cannot believe it took me so long to eat here, because this food is amazing. If you’re looking for good Indian food (not spicy!) in Columbia—no you aren’t, you want to try Mahi’s Ethiopian instead (though the Indian in town can be great too). It’s as good as, better than, any mild deliciously-spiced local curry.
Had the red lentils, kale and chickpeas… everything was stellar. The kale is comparable to your usual (collard) “greens” dish with chow chow, just served on a delicious “pancake” of bread to sop the juice.
Plus, if she has a minute, she is a charismatic “host” too! It’s where Chim’s used to be… easy to overlook, so just find it next to Kampai.

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I have to tell you I will definitely be back. I tried out the sampler platter so I could try multiple dishes. I would highly recommend that. I look forward to trying out something new on my next visit.

Absolutely delicious Ethiopian cuisine. The flavors are amazing. We have been twice now and can’t wait to come back. My wife and I get the combo platter and love to try all the different menu items. We love the beet and potato vegetable sides. Prices are very reasonable. My baby likes this his normal baby food and other American foods we have tried to get him to eat.

Finally got to try Mahi’s after wanting to for a while, and I’m so glad I did! The food was amazing; so flavorful, and the portion sizes are great. I can’t wait to go back again and try more! Also, there are plenty of options for vegans/vegetarians, which is really nice as well. Mahi herself is really sweet and provided great service. Whether you’ve had Ethiopian food before or you’re interested in trying it, please check this place out to support a local business and taste some delicious food. 🙂

We had a wonderful time :-). We ordered everything on the menu so that we could enjoy every flavor. The beef tartar was spicy at extremely good. I’ve had Ethiopia when I was a kid and started feels just like it was back then.
We have plenty of food for some leftovers for a number of days We are super happy with our visit. Finding different foods in the middle of Missouri while I’m vacation be challenging get this exist. We live in the middle of nowhere and we don’t have much till this place is a delight.
The location is in the alley just so that anyone reading this knows. We walked the alley once before on our tour of downtown and some sites.
There are only two items on the menu though we were not able to get that was eggplant comes a green beans one. For the entire menu spent less than $200.
