I stopped by with my Mom today to try the filly sandwich and have to say it’s the best sandwich I’ve had in a long time! The brisket is so tender, it almost melts in your mouth, and the meat is covered with a very generous amount of peppers, onions, and cheese. This is a LARGE sandwich and I can make two meals out of it! The french fries were hot and delicious, too. The ladies that work here are so nice and took our order immediately. We will definitely be back soon! The folks that run this restaurant really do a lot to support law enforcement and during the big fires in Fremont County they did a lot to help out.

I thought it was pretty good at their new Canon City location, and what’s best is that they’re open the 2 days that Chicago Bob’s is closed! 🙂 I got my order for carry out and staff was very friendly. They gave me all 3 types of BBQ sauces to try, and my favorite was the Spicy. What’s nice is they let you put your own sauce on it. I got the Brisket and thought it was a little dry – but it was still good. There wasn’t much fat on them at all but I was a little bummed because I like a good amount of fat. Their fried okra was excellent. I thought their baked beans were okay but would be better if they were BBQ baked beans with BBQ sauce in them.

I went in Saturday evening and it was wonderful. As I walked in the door I was greeted by three ladies. A younger gal told my husband n I to make ourselves comfortable and sit where ever we would like to. Our server I do believe her name was Ashley got to our table right away and asked what we would like to drink. My husband didn’t know what kind of beer he wanted so she brought us a list and she describe them and recommended angry orchard. I myself ordered the three meat with brisket, pork, and chicken with Mac n cheese, fries and polenta fries instead of corn bread. And my husband got the bowl of green chili. All tasted amazing. Our server came and checked on us many times and was on top of refills. The owners Jim and Donna both came out and even asked how everything was. Pleasant visit, friendly people. Will be going back and I recommend bringing your family and friends.

I have eaten a lot of BBQ and I have to say that this is the best I have ever had so far. The highlight of the meal was the cream corn. In my opinion, I could eat it every day. Great service too. Just sit back and watch the waitresses running around taking care of the customers. They do a great job. You will not be disappointed.

The price was too too high for the meat you received. Ordered two meat platter that comes with two sides and bread. I received two tiny ribs that had no meat on them should have taken picture. I can buy a rack of ribs and get good chunks off all rib slices! And one small slice of brisket for $13.25!!! It was worth about $10. Have you eaten at Bird Dog BBQ? If not people you need to go because you get a lot more meat for less. Very disappointed

First time customer and I was pleasantly surprised. Excellent food and service. I had the Chicken Ranch sandwich, chili cheese fries and an amazin Scottish dark ale. Wait staff was extremely attentive, prices affordable and the food was perfectly prepared. This is a must eat!

Went on a Sat. afternoon for lunch during a motorcycle ride. Took group of friends. Unfortunately, they were out of a lot of Ford on the menu and some of the beers. Service was great tho. The single waitress was non-stop and kept up with the crowd. Will go again.

The beef was very good, but the sausage tasted store bought and not anything special. No deserts or other items (chicken) due to being to close to Christmas. The exhaust fans were not working well as we all walked out smelling like old fry grease. (Yuck!) I would give them another chance, but that will be a year or so.

I’m a recent transplant here in Colorado–I’ve lived in 17 different states and I came for a visit about a year ago and decided to make Colorado #18. One of my favorite things to do when moving anywhere is to try out the local restaurants and see the local interpretation of any genre of food.

I love barbecue so naturally I thought I’d give Steele Smokin’ BBQ a go. Plus the smell emanating from the building was a pretty big encouragement! The place was spacious and clean and it was a simple but nice atmosphere. I’ve been there a handful of times since my first visit, so one thing I will say is that I haven’t had consistent experiences there, but none have been flat-out bad. A few times have been stellar and a few times the food has been a little lukewarm or the service has take a long time despite not being busy. No biggie for me; just an observation. Overall, a decent experience each time.

On to the food. I really enjoyed everything that I’ve gotten here; mainly brisket-based meals since I eat Torah Kosher and that means no pork for me. I’d say the highlight was the Filly Sandwich … a bbq version of the classic Philly steak & cheese. The first time the sandwich was so overflowing with veggies, cheese and meat that I had enough to take home with me to make a whole new sandwich. The second time the meat was fairly sparse, but it was still a decent size sandwich. I typically go for fries & Macaroni and Cheese; those two are usually really good. One time my fries were a little overcooked and warm, but usually they’re pretty good. I also really like the deep fried pickles. They’re spears, so it’s a little different from your usual pickle slices and better since the slices tend to get a little greasy.

As far as the sauces go, I wasn’t a huge fan. They weren’t bad at all, but just not my bag. They had good flavor but they were a little runny for me. I like thick, rich, dark sauces so it might just be a personal preference. They appeared to be house-made, which I do appreciate and like. But honestly I feel like a good barbecue meat shouldn’t need to be smothered in sauce, and I can say the Steele Smokin’ BBQ brisket didn’t really need loads of sauce in terms of flavor–I really enjoyed the seasonings that were used to encrust the brisket. They were kind of spicy; I liked that. On my first visit I didn’t really need a lot of sauce because the meat was tender, juicy and delicious. On a subsequent visit the meat was very dry so I used a lot of sauce.

I understand the difficulty of providing a consistent experience with food; particularly with barbecue because of the process involved. So all of that doesn’t really bother me. The service is sort of inconsistent as far as speed, but everyone who has served me has been very nice and fairly attentive.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the flavor and the quality of the food … it’s pretty good. What probably keeps me from going here more often are the prices, which are a little bit steep for barbecue. So, instead of this being a go-to place I tend to relegate it to times where I’m doing a little better financially and can spend a little more frivolously. But for this transplant who has lived in Barbecue capitals around the country and has a critical palate towards barbecue in general, I’ll probably continue to visit Steele Smokin’ BBQ as the insatiable hunger for good barbecue arises … coinciding, of course, with a hearty paycheck.

So there is good BBQ and then there’s really good BBQ and then there’s the kind of BBQ that you say,’that was so good that when I die I don’t want that served at my funeral because it might just bring me back from the dead and that would be ugly’. Steele Smokin’ is like that. Donna and Jim and Ashley have got this dialed in and unless you don’t eat food you would probably love anything off the menu. If you want to complain about prices you may want to try fast food because it’s cheap and this place isn’t. That being said, one probably shouldn’t be going out to eat if one is trying to save money – least of all at a nice place like this. (There’s a Taco Bell in Canon.) They are not super fancy but they are very clean and professional and friendly. So if you want to eat some BBQ that is so good that your burps three hours later still taste good – this is the place. If you want to smell the wood fired smoker hundreds of yards before you get there to actually taste what has been making you salivate – this is the place. If you don’t mind pretty ladies waiting your table, if you have never had a pile of Nachos with brisket and Jalepenos that make you think “no way” and then at the end think “I can’t drive because I have had too much and I’ll pass out” then Steel Smokin BBQ in Florence might just be your best option. If you tell them Earl sent you – they’ll just look at you funny.
