We decided at the last minute to go out for dinner on a Saturday night, which as you can imagine can be tricky. We tried a couple of other places, but they had very long waits, including Relish. We couldn’t get in, but we saw a couple of people go next door to Von Rothenburg, so we decided to tag along, hoping that there might be something there. So glad that we did. Both Relish and Von Rothenburg are owned by the Angel’s Share Hospitality Group.
It’s a German-style pub with very distinctive German-style architecture. When you walk in, there is a large bar. Most of the bar stools were filled. There is a dining room adjacent to the bar and another one upstairs. Most of the tables have plain wooden tops, a good fit for the pub atmosphere. The walls are stucco and trimmed in oak. The place has a relaxed feel to it.
We took an open table, and in several minutes our bartender/server greeted us, gave us menus, and took our drink orders. We got a couple of small glasses. They had my favorite, Stiegl Grapefruit Radler. The food menu is not especially German and has a wide variety of items, ranging from burgers, pasta, seafood, and fish frys (referred to as Relish Cod/Perch Fry, which is a nod to the Relish restaurant next door). They had several specials, including a Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb, and being a fan of lamb, I had to order that. We also got a Clubhouse Burger, ordered medium rare.
It took a bit for the food, and our server kept us updated (and apologized) on the progress. To me, it didn’t seem that long of a wait, but I appreciated the earnestness of our server, which was demonstrated the entire evening (thanks, Tanner). When it arrived, both meals were hot, well presented, and good portions. The lamb was served a perfect medium rare. The flavors from the herbs were outstanding. Lots of rosemary, and the au jus was rich and flavorful. The accompanying Sweet Potato Gratin was just okay. Not sure if the potatoes were cooked enough for my liking. The pile of potatoes had a Gruyère-like cheese that I didn’t feel was a good complement. The burger was very good, in spite of being overcooked to medium well. The side of fries was hot and very tasty.
Overall, a good meal and a place that we would likely return to.

What a special place. Many thanks to Shannon and the team for making our night special. Loved the Bavarian pretzel, chicken schnitzel, beer batter cod, German beer. However not only was the food Deeee÷licious but the staff made us out of towners feel at home. Loved the playing of german music in the background as well. We will definately travel to visit again.

Had a great platter of sausages to share, chewy soft pretzel, and great beer. Service was attentive and friendly.

Best fish fry in town. Amazing smash burgers. Don’t sleep in the chicken schnitzel sandwich either. Pair one of those with a liter of any of their delicious beers and you’ll have a meal to remember. Some days are more staffed than others so order your drinks at the bar. Bring the whole family.

I had the 3 piece breaded Fish Fry. It was very good., flaky and perfectly cooked. The fries are chunky, crispy on the outside and fleshy inside. The meal came with a side of coleslaw. The atmosphere inside the bar was great but the acoustics made it difficult to hear others. I would recommend this place, it is small so get there early.

This was such a fun spot to discover! We stumbled upon it via a Google search looking for a place to meet up with family. We were all blown away by how charming, well laid out and maintained the outdoor space is! The guy who took our orders and brought our food was so friendly and on top of things. The food was delicious- everything came out perfectly made and flavorful. The house chips are thin, wide sliced fries- they were so good we ordered an extra basket! We appreciated the small menu- it made choosing easy and clearly they excell at the dishes they chose to offer. Beer and wine was fantastic too- everyone loved what they got. And our toddler loved playing in the rocks We will definitely be back!

The menu has changed significantly since I was here last, and the place should not be called a German restaurant anymore. There is next to nothing in terms of German food on the menu. It’s mostly steaks, seafood, and pasta. I had the chicken schnitzel and it was okay, but the potatoes were cold. The dish should come with a side of sauerkraut or beets. Pretty disappointed with the food. You can still get a good German beer, though.

In Germantown one expects a German-themed restaurant. Unfortunately all there is, is this Bier Stube. It’s been around a while and maintains much of its architecture, a bier garden and history. The food is poor. The $30 schnitzel is a few breaded pieces deep fried. Potatoes too, deep fried. And a taco truck in the summer?!
If one is going to present German-themed food, please take the effort to learn what that is. This is one of, I believe, three locations owned by the same group – all basically the same, fancy bar food. Being involved in several MKE German groups, I speak for many who stopped going here for anything other than the Gemütlichkeit we bring and maybe ein bier.
