Am I in LA or Holland, Michigan? Who knows when you’re inside this place?!? Really SPECIAL drinks for a special night out. Dark & cozy. Great staff. Love it! Elaborate cocktails priced $16-$25. Treat yourself!

If you enjoy cocktails, this is a must in Holland. Stopped in off a recommendation from a local friend and it did not disappoint! Had “A Samurai that Smells of Sunflowers” and Jungle Bird and both were excellent! My buddy had the Saladito and Oaxaca Old Fashioned and both of those were stellar as well. They make a lot (all?) of their tinctures in house and have a great selection of cocktails. Very cool/chill atmosphere and superb presentation on the cocktails. Staff were very friendly, too. They also have beer, wine, and non-alcoholic cocktails so it’s a great place even if someone in your group isn’t into cocktails. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.

Long-time customer here. My wife and I really enjoy the Obstacle #1—a smoky old fashioned. We stopped in tonight and ordered it “not sweet,” but were told it’s now premade. Unfortunately, it was extremely sweet and basically undrinkable for us. We paid and left the drinks. We won’t be back

Put on a wait, was told it’d be 45-60 for a table, or spot for 4… went to check an hour later, and then told they wouldn’t have a table for the rest of night. How does it go from “we can seat you on 45-60mins” to not having a spot the rest of the evening in that same time frame.
Bartenders are great, but the host seems lost, poorly trained, or both.

Wonderful place for an evening nightcap. We stopped in after our anniversary dinner on the waterfront. This was a very cool, romantic place. The selection of craft drinks is exceptional and the service was extraordinary. Highly recommend stopping in for an after dinner drink. They do have a food menu, but we did not partake, so cannot comment.

Love this spot! You’ll need reservations ~two weeks out, so plan accordingly. Also, plenty of goat cheese on the menu so no need to bring your own. Whiskey for days, rum for years and fresh cocktails on the menu as needed.

What a unique bar/lounge for Holland. Small inside, but it makes it feel very intimate and relaxing. The bartender was very knowledge and willing to mix drinks to our tastes that weren’t even on the menu. Keep in mind this isn’t somewhere you’ll go for a quick drink. This is somewhere you’ll want to kick back and hang out a while.

Really lovely spot to have drinks with friends! A bit dark when you first walk in so be prepared, but once your eyes adjust it really makes for a lovely mood and experience.

I had the Paper Plane and Brussels Sprouts and both were delicious!

Cozy atmosphere, great drinks. Hostess went out of her way to fit us in and bartenders did a great job. Drinks were not made, they were crafted.

Cool, intimate, relaxing – well done!
First time at Obstacle No. 1 – must say we like this addition to the growing area of West 8th Street.
I’m giving it 4 stars only because the girl who made my drink that night was following a recipe in a book (which I get, we all need to start somewhere). It was clear she was likely new or new to this bar.

I ordered a mojito which I’ve been lucky enough to have in the Mercado’s of Puerto Rico – a bit old school maybe – but more mint! Brown sugar, limes, muddle, muddle, muddle. It’s truthfully not a difficult drink, but getting the proportions right is key. By the time I was at the bottom of my glass it resembled a mojito, but the top 2/3 was a little light on flavors of the drink. Maybe it was a Cuban mojito, but even so, it lacked enough mint to give it that classic herbaceous flavor the drink is known for.

I really can’t fault them for that because the rest of the speakeasy is lovely with a large selection of cocktails and other beverages. It’s so nice to see bigger city craft cocktail bars popping up in towns like Holland. I hope that they come up with some nice drinks as the seasons go by because this is a lovely spot. The interior is beautifully done with warm inviting tones and nice textures.
