Just keeps getting better and better! I had the Eggs Benedict yesterday for lunch! I usually get their club sandwich because I love classic triple decker clubs and their club is SO good with their sweet potato fries! But yesterday was all about breakfast for lunch and I was so glad I tried the benedict! The eggs were poached perfectly! Their was no slim piece of ham, it was a ham steak! It was amazing! Their Hollandaise sauce was really good too! But in all honesty, everything we have had there has been wonderful! Breakfast, lunch and dinner, I just want to keep trying new things because so far everything has been wonderful! Their staff is so friendly and fast! Enjoy! You won’t be disappointed!

Came here early morning, Had been driving since yesterday over 100 miles and just coming over the SLO mountain I had to pull over. I saw this town, and when I came down the road I found this diner/restaurant. It was about the only one here, but I’m glad it was. Esmeralda our server, was more than happy to help my girlfriend and I. The tables are clean, the bathroom is neat, and I would tell everyone who came for there first time to Santa Margarita to come and have some good food here at 1889 Brunch spot- and if Esmeralda is there make sure you say hi!

1889 The Brunch Spot is hands-down one of the best finds in the San Luis Obispo area. Let’s talk about the $2 tacos—absolute game changers! Packed with flavor, fresh ingredients, and that perfect street taco vibe, these are easily the best thing to hit SLO in a long time. You could honestly build your day around them.
The outdoor patio has this laid-back, Southwest feel that instantly transports you to a rustic Texas ranch. Sitting there, staring out across the street at the old feed store and weathered silos, you can almost hear the tin roofs creak and feel the charm of small-town Americana. The ambiance is pure comfort, with a mix of string lights, cozy seating, and country tunes setting the mood just right.
As “Your Man” by Josh Turner plays on the local radio, and a few Lainey Wilson tracks roll in, the whole place just radiates chill, country vibes. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and all that matters is good food, good music, and good company.
And here’s the kicker—it’s pet friendly! You can bring your furry best friend and relax on the patio, while they chill in a shaded spot just as comfy as yours.
The staff? Super friendly. The atmosphere? Authentic and relaxed. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this spot is a must-visit.

First time here and we loved it. Great steak salad and delicious California burger. Our waitress Maggy was so sweet and efficient. The patio was lovely with the added blessing of KLove playing.

I was traveling with friends to San Luis Obispo and Google Maps took us on a weird and strange route. We hoped to find a lunch spot around noon, but we found ourselves in a wilderness with no restaurants available. We finally found civilization in Santa Margarita around 1 pm, and J’s Country Kitchen appeared. We stopped, but it turned out to be much more than just a place to eat. It was a quiet, local spot with excellent service and food! Our sandwiches were great, and our server was attentive and friendly. The experience was so positive that we will seek it out next time on purpose!

You’re looking for a good brunch, breakfast, or lunch, my suggestion is you try 1889 in Santa Margarita! My wife and I went for Easter lunch, and was greeted promptly. They even let it stay open longer than they would normally, just so they could serve us. My wife had the Jose burger, a side of sweet potato fries, and I had the fish tacos. Tacos had an excellent taste, and the burger was scrumptious! You can’t go wrong here!

Sometimes you stumble upon a great food. Loved the decor specially the outdoor sitting. The hostess was gracious and welcoming. Food was lip smacking, a great way to start our day after camping at the lake side. Didn’t expect to find this gem, I am eating here every time I camp at Santa Margarita!!

What a surprise to find this place on my drive to Bakersfield on the Randy Travis More Life Tour !
So grateful these independent places still exist! There’s nothing more American and Patriotic than supporting them. Food and service was top notch!
