Had the tostadas and a rib dish. The tostadas were really good. The ribs were well done and sauce was flavorful. The margaritas were ok – more a mix I think – the tacos on display at another table looked good.

In from Chicago for work and it was National Taco Day. Found this place online and stopped in. Chips and salsa app was 10/10. Fresh handmade chips, and the salsa was rich in garlic and very flavorful. The best we’ve had. It was taco Tuesday so we tried a few different meats. Steak, Carnitas, and pastor. All on fresh, made to order, handmade tortillas. All to die for! Also tried the chicken enchiladas, again on handmade tortillas, again very good. Washed it all down with a Paloma and a house Marg. You gotta try this place, you won’t be disappointed!

This was our first time visiting and had a great meal. The restaurant is nicely decorated, from the tables and chairs, to the walls. Anna was are server and was great. She was very attentive and made some great food suggestions. We had the dirty fries with carne esada as an appetizer. For entrees we had the Burrito Michoacano, which was not too spicy, the Crunchwrap which was very good, and the La Catrina Burrito with carne esada. For drinks we tried their margaritas, which were not too sweet and not too boozy. Will definitely be back!

La Catrina Mexican Restaurant & Tortilleria is an absolute gem. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with such warmth and kindness…from the host to our amazing server, Anna, who truly elevated the entire experience with her attentiveness and friendly energy. You can immediately tell how much care and pride go into this place.

Every single bite tasted fresh and homemade. The tortilla chips and tortillas were clearly made with love, the guacamole and salsas were vibrant and full of flavor, and even the horchata was perfectly balanced…refreshing and authentic. Nothing felt prepackaged or rushed, it was all thoughtfully prepared.
I ordered the quesabirria taco plate, and wow… the consommé was so rich and flavorful I could honestly drink it on its own. The tacos were perfectly crispy, cheesy, and packed with bold, savory flavor. My boyfriend had the chicken street tacos, and the seasoning and toppings paired beautifully, creating a simple yet unforgettable combination.

Beyond the food, the ambiance truly stood out. The decor is a beautiful celebration of Hispanic culture. From the colorful wooden tables and Mexican cultural imagery embedded into the tabletops, to the stunning Día de los Muertos artwork adorning the walls. Every detail felt intentional and immersive, making the space feel warm, vibrant, and full of life. The atmosphere truly encapsulated the heart of Mexican and Hispanic culture.

Between the authentic flavors, welcoming service, and thoughtfully curated environment, this is a place we will absolutely return to and recommend to anyone craving genuine, Mexican cuisine.

This was our first time eating at this restaurant. I almost didn’t come because the Google review photo contained tables and chairs arranged like the old buffet restaurant that used to be there. I was pleasantly surprised! The new owners did a great job with the new seating arrangement. Cozy booths with high backs to provide some privacy. The tables and chairs were painted with colorful images that looked more modern than other Mexican restaurants. The music wasn’t too loud. It was upbeat and happy; which helped me get in a good mood!

I ordered a frozen lime Margarita with salt on the rim, which was served with a colorful orange slice garnish. The drink was not too sweet and it had a unique flavor. I didn’t see chimichangas on the menu, so I asked if they had shrimp chimichangas. They are in the process of updating the menu…and they serve them. They were delicious! He ordered tamales and said they were the best he’s tasted locally. The tamales came with a unique cucumber salsa on the side. It was sweet and spicy (flavorful, not too hot) at the same time. I learned it’s a family recipe from Mexico.

The staff was friendly and the portion sizes were just right for both of us. We don’t eat out much, but we’re definitely coming back again!

The fajitas here are the best I’ve ever had. PERIOD. I always order chicken fajitas. I like a lot of seasoning in my food, but not a lot of heat. These are perfect. So savory! A flavor bomb just exploded in my mouth! The best part- it tastes the same everytime. The consistency guarantees that I’ll get the flavor and satisfaction I’m expecting. They aren’t served on cast iron, but the portions aren’t too big. I feel like I waste so much food at other Mexican restaurants, but not here. My boyfriend gets the steak fajitas and they have the option to add extra meat for him. If you haven’t tried this place, you really are missing out!

Really good Mexican food with regional dishes from the Michoacán province. Best mole I’ve had in years, as good as any I’ve had during my three decades living in California. Handmade corn tortillas were excellent. The hostess seated me even though I arrived a few minutes before closing. Fun mix of diners from Central America and upper Midwest. Authentic decor.

I am currently on a taco tour trying to find the best chips and salsa, steak taco and lime margarita. All are rated on a scale of 1-5

Taco Tour stop #26
La Catrina Mexican Restaurant & Tortilleria – 310 N. Wisconsin St Depere, WI

This tour was a little different due to it being our only stop and we had lunch. A steak taco plate, chicken taco plate and quesa birria were all ordered.

Chips and Salsa: The chips were thick and lightly salted. Even though the chips were thicker, they were almost airy. The salsa was so fresh, full of flavor and just a great kick – 5

Lime Margarita on the rocks: These were freshly made. Not too sour and not too sweet. Just a really great and refreshing margarita. We could see ourselves enjoying several of these on a warm summer day – 5

Steak Taco:
Flavor: 5
Fullness: 5
Appearance: 5

This steak was well seasoned and had a nice char on it. The tortillas are handmade and so good. I personally would have like the tortillas to have been fried on the flattop a little more, but the tortilla held up and did not break apart and was a great addition to the meat.

Service – really good service and very personable – 5

We were asked if he wanted red or green salsa for our meal and then if we wanted hot or mild. We went with green and asked for both hot and mild. Both were delicious and the mild had a kick which some thought was a lot….however when you added the salsa to your taco it 100% took that food to the next level.

Flavor was good and “on point”

Quesa Birria:
Flavor: 3
Fullness: 5+
Appearance: 3

We have never had Quesa Birria before, so we don’t have anything to compare it to at this time. But overall it was really good.

We were given rice and beans with our plates which were delicious.

This place prides themselves on using fresh ingredients and making things from scratch and it really shows.

We would definitely come back here again and this place has moved into our top three places.
