A Joe Bonamassa concert had us in town and we had an hour before the doors would open so we looked on Google Maps to see what our food options were nearby.
Fortunately for us Dua Pie was the closest and I’m glad it was!
The decor is very open and there’s a loooong table in the center of the room for seating as well as a few booths on one side of the room.
Evalyn was very helpful with these first timers and explained the options for us.
We ended up going with the Calzones and they were fantastic! Stuffed with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, sauce, and sausage. The dough is crisp yet still maintains a good chew too!
Delicious, upbeat, and just a wonderful place…we’ll definitely be back!
I have eaten a lot of pizza.
I think, for many of us, pizza is one of those cuisine staples, always around, a go to choice for gatherings or a quick dinner.
During the last few years I have found my desire for pizza to be waning, I think I have simply had too much of it for too long.
That attitude got a complete reset when I visited Dua Pie recently!
Their menu is varied, the aroma was mouth watering (literally), and the food was “wake the kids and phone the neighbors” good!
The downtown corner location, at the corner of 3rd Street & 4th Avenue, feels like a hip, big city spot.
The interior is well designed, not ornamented or garish, but suble, sophisticated, and modern.
A note on parking. I am sure many will lament the street or ramp parking, but that is really just a part of the downtown experience.
It is just something that is, like traffic or weather, and I sincerely hope that it doesn’t keep anyone from dining at this fantastic new restaurant.
One walks to the back to order and faces a glassed counter full of huge pizzas, equally impressive calzones, and other savory treasures.
I love the fact that the diner can walk up and point at a delish pie and say, “I’ll have a slice of that one”
I found it delightful to order by sight, as did the rest of my party of four.
And this brings up another huge bonus of being able to order by the slice, everyone gets exactly what they want!
Our order consisted of Fried Cheese Ravioli to start.
The ravioli were super tasty! Dusted with herbs that took the flavor profile to the next level and served with a richly flavored marinara that was well spiced but not overly acidic, as some dipping marinaras can be.
We like fried ravioli as a group, and enjoy them from another fave local restaurant, but Lindi noted that these were “way better”, indeed!
Then each of us chose a slice or roll.
I went with the stuffed Chicken Parm slice, “stuffed” because it has a layer of their scrumptious crust on top!
Louise went with a traditional pepperoni, Josiah (the youngest of our group) decided on BBQ chicken, and Lindi chose a non-pizza dish, the Spinach Roll.
The pizzas the slices are cut from are huge! I am sure a few folks can enjoy a couple of slices but one slice each had all of us totally satisfied.
I actually couldn’t finish my slice of stuffed Chicken Parm, it was rich and delish, but ⅔ of the way thru I had to call it quits.
The filling was just as it sounds, a thin-ish layer of cheesy, breaded chicken Parmesan that would have been incredible by itself, and as a filling was heavenly.
Their crust is nothing short of magnificent, with a fabulous flavor and “chew” that sets the benchmark for pizza crust for me.
This is a New York style crust, not thin and cracker-y like many wood fired crusts, nor bready like most pizza places, just that perfect slim, dense layer of crust that holds up and complements the toppings to a “T”!
The pepperoni slice was expertly cooked, the pepperoni itself just to the point of a crisp, but not actually crispy, and the cheese browned to perfection.
I did not have a bite of the BBQ chicken, but it looked wonderful.
Josiah reported, between bites, that it indeed was.
The last dish chosen was a Spinach Roll.
A turnover style construction with a luscious cheese and spinach filling surrounded by plenty of that incredible crust!
Lindi finished half of it and had to box the rest for later.
The menu is vast, with tons of choices for whole pies, as well as appetizers, salads, sides, add-ons, hot subs, pasta, and desserts.
This is one of those places that one has to visit multiple times in order to sample a variety of dishes.
We are lucky to have this fabulous eatery in our community, I 100% recommend it, and will be returning soon… I feel like the calzone is calling my name
The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and the menu has awesome options beyond pizza too, like stromboli, calzones, pasta, and subs all classic Italian meets New York style. Really excited to come back soon and try more. Highly recommend if you’re craving big, flavorful pizza with a perfect crust!
