recently had the pleasure of stopping by the Atlantic City Mercantile for lunch, and I must say, I was absolutely captivated by the Wyoming rustic atmosphere that greeted me. As I entered, I couldn’t help but feel like I had stepped into a high-end museum rather than a restaurant. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, happily sharing historic information about the area and informing me that this year marked the 130th anniversary of the establishment.
The bar area was a true gem, reminiscent of a bygone era with its transport from a burlesque in Hudson Wyoming. It added an extra touch of charm and authenticity to the overall experience. The lunch menu was refreshingly simple, focusing mainly on hamburgers and appetizers. While some may argue for an extensive menu, the Atlantic City Mercantile proves the adage that if you do one thing a day and do it well, it’s worth it. And boy, do they do it well! I can confidently say that the burger I enjoyed there was one of the best I have ever had.
If you plan to visit for dinner, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. The Atlantic City Mercantile is well-known for their exquisite steaks, cooked right in the dining area over an open aspen fire. The aroma alone is enough to whet your appetite and leave you craving for more.
In conclusion, the Atlantic City Mercantile is an absolute must-stop if you find yourself in the area. From the captivating Wyoming rustic atmosphere to the friendly and knowledgeable staff, every aspect of this establishment exudes charm and excellence. Whether you’re craving a mouthwatering burger or a perfectly cooked steak, the Atlantic City Mercantile will leave you with a memorable dining experience that will keep you coming back for more.

WORST EXPERIENCE IN A RESTAURANT EVER! Stopped in one day on an outing. It was a very awkward experience! I haven’t eaten there for approximately 5 years. I believe my experience then was similar. The host asked if we had a reservation when we walked in. We said no. The host was extremely rude about the fact we didn’t have reservations. They don’t advertise that fact, so we didn’t know. The place was empty when we walked in. So, there were places to sit us. Then the owner made us feel extremely awkward. He voiced, very loudly, to all staff that we didn’t have a reservation. He did this to every staff member that walked by. Whether they had anything to do with our table or not. Another couple walked in shortly after us without a reservation. They sat them, no problem. For some reason they weren’t happy with my husband and I for not having a reservation. I guess it will be an extremely long time before I try and eat there again. It was truly unprofessional and awkward. All they had to do was tell us we need reservations. Instead of creating the extra drama because we didn’t know something they don’t advertise.

Great filet and ribeye steaks, done perfectly. Our server was prompt and attentive. The place is loaded with interesting antique items.
The operating hours are brief. I suggest calling to ensure they’re open and making a reservation.

I can’t stress enough how if you have kids (or even if you don’t) you should bring them here. If you live in WY and want to show your kids the history of the place you live this is where you bring them. This is best preserved “ghost” town I’ve ever seen. Get there early enough in the day to go on a tour of the Carissa Mine…you don’t actually go down in the mine but are in the mill area…and the mill actually works…so they’ll get the machinery running to show you how it all works…really cool! Spend some time walking and touring the town at your own pace…they have lots of rooms set up on display so you can imagine what it would look like during that time…lots of information and history…people in character work the town as barkeeps and shop tenders…pick up a souvenir (I got a button puller and my husband got a replica deck of cards). Visit the cemetery which still has a few grave sites that weren’t moved and take the hiking trail. The mine tour only cost about $2 and the rest is free…so if you’re looking for a super affordable day adventure when your kids are out of school and you want to pry their eyeballs away from the tube/phones/ipads…this is a great option. Go see your state…learn something…get outside and get some exercise.

If you’re like me and judge establishments by their taxidermy, there are not enough stars to hand out for The Mercantile in Atlantic City, WY. I’ve traveled extensively searching for pinnacle when it comes to rustic charm, and The Merc cannot be outdone. Beyond the aesthetics, the server at the bar was attentive to our needs and our lunch was fast and hit the spot after a day of blue grouse hunting at my secret spot (don’t bother asking me). I cannot wait for my next visit and hope I can make it in for a steak dinner soon, that is cooked on their open-flame grill seen in the photos.

We went there for our 38th anniversary while staying in Atlantic City WY. The food there is always good, and the old west mining town atmosphere just adds to it. Their Aspen fired steaks are some of the best I ever ate. Just don’t forget to call first and make a reservation.

What a cool place! Seriously. You have to experience it. The bar keep is very nice. The place is an amazing piece of history. One beer on tap, and it’s their own Atlantic City brew. I love this place.

Absolutely worth a visit if you are in the area when they are open. Make sure you come hungry (and thirsty). Great old west atmosphere, all the menu options I have sampled so far were excellent, and they make one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Friendly and welcoming staff really makes this place a great experience. I would avoid the Grubstake diner right next door – it has none of the charm, a far worse menu for higher prices, and none of the welcome that we received at the Mercantile.

Old school Wyoming atmosphere. Friendly service. Very tasty cheeseburger and does equis beer. The prices were reasonable especially considering that it’s in the middle of nowhere (in a good way.)
They were open only on Fri, Sat and Sunday when I was there.
I’m glad I went. I’ll go again.
